25.01.2022 PHYSIO FACTS FRIDAY Achilles Tendinopathy ... What is the achilles tendon? A tendon attaches muscle to bone. The achilles tendon attaches your two calf muscles to the heel bone. You use these muscles to come up onto your tip toes. What is achilles tendinopathy? Tendinopathy means tendon degeneration. This occurs when a tendon is not strong enough to adapt to the strain put on it. Overtime this leads to repetitive microtraumas and attempted healing by the tendon. Now the tendon is not very functional and can cause pain. What is the cause? The exact cause is unknown. Many things may cause too much load to be put onto th etendon- it is not simply due to exercising too much. Risk Factors -Age> 30 -Gender: more common in men -Increased weight -Diabetes -Tight or weak calf muscles -Poor hip/ knee stability - Stiff foot joints - Training errors such as too high intensity too soon, lack of variation of training, poor footwear, excessive hill running What are the symptoms? -Pain in the morning which eases after a few minutes of walking -Tenderness over the achilles tendon -Pain is variable: sometimes people can exercise through pain and it hurts more at rest, other times it stops you from exercising or even walking. What can a physio do? We will do some assessments to determine if you have achilles tendinopathy and what stage it is in. Treatment may include a combination of : -Exercise: gradual loading of the tendon is essential for repair -massage -Rehab for adjacent joints -Biomechanical training -advice and education on training modification and things to avoid or include What can a podiatrist do? -Assess the structure of your foot -create customised shoe wear -created customised orthotics -Shockwave therapy -modify your shoe to help with your pain and healing As always, this post is purely for educational purposes and does not act to diagnose or treat any condition. If this sounds like you- book in with a physiotherapist to get started on treatment to get you back to doing what you love!

23.01.2022 PHYSIO FACTS Chronic Low Back Pain ... What is it Your back or lumbar region consists of 5 vertebrae beginning below the last rib and goes until your tailbone, and the surrounding musculature, nerves, discs, ligaments and tendons. If your back pain has been present for more than 3 months it is considered chronic. It is common- affecting nearly 60-80% of people throughout their lifetime. What causes it Specific causes of chronic low back pains are uncommon- in 90% of cases a specific cause can not be identified with certainty. It is associated with many factors including -musculoskeletal disorders -decreased strength of the low back musculature -lifestyle factors like obesity and stress - family history of back pain -nuerochemical changes to several brain regions which lead to a process called sensitisation What is sensitisation If you think of your brain like an alarm system, it should sound the alarm when there is danger. When pain persists longer than the body is in danger, the alarm system becomes sensitised. The alarm system is triggered very easily and pain signals are sent out without any real danger. This may be a factor in some chronic low back pain presentations. Can physios help Yes we can! Along with other multidisciplinary team members we can help manage your pain, improve your function and get you back to doing the things you love. Specific treatments we may do as physiotherapists include: -general exercise therapy -motor control exercises -McKenzie Method -Advice and education, stress management techniques -graded return to movement Bottom line Just because it is chronic, it doesn’t not mean there is nothing you can do about it! It is not a quick fix but it is NOT something you have to live with- come on in and see us for help getting moving and grooving again! As always remember this is purely an education post and does not act to diagnose, treat or manage any condition. See more

21.01.2022 Day 3 post op - some serious changes have been made. Walking feels very foreign. I feel like I am leaning sideways as always used to stand with a huge lateral trunk shift to the left. I can’t believe how weak you can feel after 2 days in bed. My exercise regime consists of a 2-3minute walk following by exercises on handrail including side stepping, calf raises and mini squats. This is now being done 3 x/day. I wouldn’t have even considered these things a warm up before but there you go... we all have to start from the beginning sometimes which is totally ok. A great baseline to move forward from

20.01.2022 What is the "Perfect Posture?" Your spine has 3 curves: cervical lordosis, thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis. These 3 curves create an S shape of your spine. In general, your pelvis should be in a neutral position, meaning it is not tilted too far forward for back. ... Your shoulders should be back standing proud and your head should be on top of your shoulders, not poking out forward or looking down. Stand with confidence- feel good look good! However EVERBODY is different! There is not one set perfect posture for everyone. The best posture is MOVEMENT! Being in any position for too long is not beneficial for the body. Humans are not made to be sedentary beings. We are made to move and bend and twist and turn. Try to avoid any prolonged posture. Prolonged postures can cause a multitude of issues. If you are experiencing postural pain- book in and see a physio!

20.01.2022 The Core What is it? The "core" is a word that people may use to describe a few different things. Colloquially this word has become synonymous with abdominals. Depending on who you ask you may get a different answer because "the core" is not a structure. I define the core as everything but your arms and legs. It is the cylinder of the body- the trunk. The top of the core is the diaphragm and the bottom is the pelvic floor. It includes all the muscles and structures ...that surround the area from below your neck to the hips. Abdominal muscles, shoulder girdle, back muscles, and glutes. What does it do? So many things! Here are just a few 1. Breathing: it controls the breath and changing pressures in the body as you inhale and exhale 2. Posture: it holds you upright 3. Stabilises you as you move through space Is it important? YES! It is important to help us breathe stabilise and move through space with control. However it is not always to blame for the cause of injury. It is an integral part of the body- without it we would just be arms and legs How do you strengthen the core? Strengthening the core is much more complex than doing sit ups. It involves breathwork, spinal mobility, motor control, stabilisation, coordination & more. Tune in for next week's post where I will show you some great core exercises! As always this post is purely for education and entertainment and does not act to diagnose or treat. If you have specific questions about your own core, make an appointment with your physio!

18.01.2022 WISDOM WEDNESDAY Use your words wisely! Words have the power to ruin or make your day. Negative talk and thoughts are self-perpetuating. The more you engage in negative conversations or thought patterns the harder it becomes to break the cycle.... How often have you felt yourself drained by negative talk, how has that led you to behave? Positive conversations lift you up and empower you. when was the last time you shared a positive experience?

17.01.2022 SPORTS INJURIES Sport is a great way to socialise and stay active but sometimes injuries will occur. No worries- physiotherapy is here to help!... common injuries? Bruises, ligament sprains, joint injuries, overuse injuries how to reduce risk of injury? Make sure to warm up and cool down, complete specific conditioning for your sport on and off season, wear correct equipment and listen to your body. what can physio do? We will assess and treat your specific injury to facilitate healing, regain strength, mobility, balance and get you back to your sport safely What to do after and injury? Advice will vary so get an opinion from a health professional but in general initially after an injury you should RICE and do no HARM. Rest Ice (make sure you have full feeling of the area and do not apply straight to the skin) Compression Elevation For the first 48 hour NO Heat Alcohol Running Massage Most importantly, see a physiotherapist especially if there is pain and swelling after 24 hours- no referral needed See more

17.01.2022 PHYSIO FACTS 2/3 of the population suffer from headaches and a large proportion of these headaches are due to neck or emotional stress. Luckily these causes can be successfully treated and prevented in the future. ... Is your headache coming from your neck? The first three nerves of the spine and their muscles and ligaments also carry sensations of pain and aching to the head. Usually the headache will start at the top of the neck and as it worsens it may spread into the back of the head the temples of the forehead or behind the eyes sometimes it is accompanied by dizziness or light-headedness and can be worsened with neck movements or by holding the neck in a forward position for a long time. Is your headache due to stress? We all feel stress from time to time but when we experience ongoing stress from work home or life in general, tension in the neck can occur. This tension in combo with the release of stress chemicals can result in headaches. Can physios help? Yes! We are experts in posture and movement and an assess whether the headache is due to emotional stress or neck stiffness or due to one of the other many causes for headaches in which case we would refer you to your medical practitioner. Techniques we may use to help you include: Mobilisation Massage Postural correction and advice Strengthening and stretching Relaxation techniques Ergonomic advice The list goes go If you have a bothersome headache come see if we can help you!

17.01.2022 Physio Facts Friday from Maggie OSTEOARTHRITIS Many people develop osteoarthritis as they age and it's impact varies person to person... Is there a cure? Unfortunately it is a permanent change to the joint due to wear and tear from overuse, general ageing, prolonged postures, excess weight or injuries. There is no cure but there are ways of managing the symptoms! Sometimes a joint replacement may be indicated if it is affecting your daily life dramatically. Can physiotherapy help? Yes! Physios can help to reduce pain, strengthen muscles and improve function along with addressing and treating biomechanical problems that may be exacerbating the symptoms. How can I help myself? Listen to your body - if it is painful don't do it! Avoid over stressing your joints, watch your weight and do your exercises prescribed by the physios, in this case pain does not equal gain!

15.01.2022 MOVEMENT MONDAY If you have pets, get outside and take them for a walk so they don’t have to walk themselves ... The National recommendations for physical activity are to be active on most, preferably all, days every week. Accumulate 150 to 300 minutes (2 to 5 hours) of moderate intensity physical activity or 75 to 150 minutes (1 to 2 hours) of vigorous intensity physical activity, or an equivalent combination of both moderate and vigorous activities, each week. This works out to be at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity 5 days of the week. Movement does not need to be complicated! Take your dog for a walk, play with the kids outside, kick a footy, walk along the beach, dance around the house or go to the gym. Whatever movement inspires you and makes you feel good. If you struggle with finding time- MAKE TIME! 10 minutes before work, 10 minutes at lunch and 10 minutes after work- start with a goal you can commit to. One step at a time... you’ll be surprised how far you can go. See more

13.01.2022 IMPORTANCE of the GLUTES What are the glutes? They are 3 large muscles on the back of your hip. Gluteus maximus, minimus and medius.... Why are they so important? They are the biggest group of muscles in your body and they should be the strongest & most powerful mover of the body. They have many actions- they help to move the leg backwards, stabilise you as you walk, stand on one leg, get up out of a chair, squat and much much more. Having weak glutes can lead to problems with your back, knees, feet and balance. What causes glute weakness? Our modern lives are very sedentary. Most people spend more time sitting than moving. When you sit your glutes are inactive and stretched. This can lead to issues with glute activation. Like any muscle, if you don't use it you lose it. How can I strengthen my glutes? Check out last weeks post where I showed you my favourite glute exercises.

13.01.2022 WISDOM WEDNESDAY Words have power. Speak positively about yourself in order to feel positive about yourself ... It is not an easy thing to do...I used to think that it was rude or arrogant to accept praise and I would always counter it with a negative trait about myself If someone said, You are so smart I would say oh no I am not, I am just good at memorising things Do you do this? Catch yourself in the act and start to change the way you talk about yourself and others. It’s not easy at first but stoping negative self talk and really change your life. We start to believe what we say over and over again. When someone gives you a compliment do not discredit it say thank you!

12.01.2022 WISDOM WEDNESDAY "Find your inner child" As we grow up we tend to forget the magical wonder and awe with which children view the world. They greet each moment with a mindful curiosity, absorbing the sights sounds and smells of the day. They are inquisitive and trusting- a beautiful naivety that allows them to soak up life. ... Lets learn a lesson or two from children! Be mindful as you walk down the street- put your phone down and look at the beauty all around you. Gaze at the clouds, skip in the grass and give yourself permission to play! It is not immature to let your inner child run wild- within reason of course. Growing up does not mean we have to grow out of what makes us happy and complete. See more

10.01.2022 WISDOM WEDNESDAY This is one of my favourite quotes that I return to constantly throughout my life. To me it is the law of the universe. What you concentrate on, will grow.
