12.01.2022 Remember when you asked that small business to support your fundraiser? It's time to support them. They're the heart of a town. Yeah. right! When I saw this ...meme it really hit home what does a lockdown mean to someone in small business? And after collecting the papers this morning I thought of the Chewton shop. And the people who staff it Papers, milk, bread, coffee predominantly but that shop has been part of an almost daily routine for twenty-odd years. And support for the community? The Chewton Chat has been going out from there since 1999, and the all-important donation tin has helped fun the on-going publication. The Chewton Chat box in the shops corner has been accepting articles and advertisements for more years than I can remember, and it shares that corner with the Chewton Pools message folder. The Chewton Pools keys are kept at the shop, as are a set of keys for the town hall. Monster Meeting T-shirts went on sale in the shop late last year, and there are still a few remaining. Cards featuring local scenes are on sale, supporting incomes of local artists and photographers. And theres raffle tickets sold there for community groups and ventures, and the prizes donated each year for the Biggest Morning Teas. Theres a lot this community has to thank the local shop for! And convenience! Especially in these lockdown times, why travel extra distance to shop among greater numbers of people? Chewtons shop currently has special arrangements in place so customers are served individually at the front door. Social distancing is so easy! Staying connected during this time of strict isolation is manageable through this shop we are very, very lucky! And letting the mind wander further back, I recall the tumultuous time when that shop burnt down! Chewton without a shop! And the days turned into weeks, then months till the Chewton Domain Society offered the town hall, council responded with permits and the Chewton shop was re-born in a temporary location. The town breathed a collective sigh of relief, soldiered on and then celebrated when the rebuilt shop opened. Visiting the shop, meeting and greeting local people is an important part of being part of a small community. The shop currently has had to reduce the trading hours to manage the current situation and is now closing at midday. Why not drop by and say hi?

04.01.2022 A town hub? Well, the cap has been lifted on this description of the Chewton General Store! Yep, a hubcap Last Sunday morning, the parking area outside the ...shop was full of vehicles. An attention-grabbing formation of well-presented horse-power. And filling the parking areas inside the shopthere were some 35 hot-rodding enthusiasts. Taking some photos, I was handed a business card Autoplex! It seems this type of gathering is a regular event for this group, booking into local businesses to socialize and put on a display of vehicles. Why Chewton? Reputation, and because Janelle was so enthusiastic when an approach was first made I was told. With so many orders to take and satisfy, that morning wasnt the time to speak to the people behind the counter. A visit for a coffee and a conversation about that Sunday Funday will be later this week
