25.01.2022 With limited firetrucks in the Chewton area, it's NOT safe to assume one will be there to protect you in a bushfire. In this video we discuss why it is important to take responsibility of your own and your family's fire safety. We also share some links to resources you can use to create your own written fire plan. The fire plan template mentioned in the video can be found at the bottom of this page, under the Resources heading: https://cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/leave-early ...- let us know if you have trouble finding it and we can send you a copy. Share this video with your family and friends to keep them informed. This video was produced by CFA Chewton's Rob Reid Smith and Christ de Kesel of AV Worx. Thanks to Warrandyte Community Association, the ‘Be Ready Warrandyte’ campaign and The Warrandyte Theatre Company for use of their fantastic footage.
24.01.2022 Mount Alexander Shire Council has extended their free green waste disposal period until Monday 16 November. If you've got grass clippings and natural wood cuttings you want to get rid of, now's the time to take it to the tip! This is a great help for getting your property ready for fire season. For tip locations and more info, visit https://www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/Page/Page.aspx
23.01.2022 Our truck got a good cleanup today after returning from a week up north helping out with the fires in the Ovens Valley around Myrtleford, Nug Nug, Whitfield and Lake Buffalo. Our thoughts are with everyone up that way.
23.01.2022 There’s another planned burn tomorrow in our area - details are below.
23.01.2022 This CFA video illustrates the danger of ember attack during a bushfire, and shows the long distances that embers can travel ahead of a fire. Even if you live a long way from the fire front, the danger that embers present to you and your property is real and significant. Planning to leave early is the best way to keep you and your family safe. Share this video with your family and friend to keep them informed, and for more information about leaving early, visit www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/leave-early
21.01.2022 The fire danger period hasn't been declared for Chewton yet, but it is in place in parts of northern Vic, so it's not too far off for us. Now is a good time to clean up and take care of any green waste you're planning on burning off. But before you burn off, please call 1800 668 511 to register your burn. You can also check out the CFA's advice on burnoff safety at https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/burning-off
20.01.2022 A busy arvo today with all the lightning and the power outage. We headed out to Sutton Grange to help check out a report of smoke and on the way back got called to respond to a smoke alarm at the Nido childcare centre on Johnstone St. Everything checked out and all were safe so we’re back at the station now. Have a good weekend everyone!
18.01.2022 EDIT: This planned burn is currently listed as planned for 2021, but at this stage there isn't any information about whether that means early 2021 after the Fire Danger Period is over, or some other time next year. We'll keep monitoring this to let people know about it. Planned burns are also announced through the VicEmergency App, so stay tuned to that as as well. Forest Fire Management Victoria has sent out a notification for a Spring 2020 planned burn in Chewton, just behi...nd the railway line, running from Railway Street to White Gum Track. As with all planned burns, the exact date of the burn can't be confirmed. From the letter that was circulated to Chewton residents: "The final decision to proceed can only be made on the day of the burn following monitoring of weather conditions and local fuel moisture levels." To find out more about the burn you can call the VicEmergency hotline on 1800 226 226. You can also sign up for email or SMS alerts at the FFMVic page for the Chewton burn, which is here: https://plannedburns.ffm.vic.gov.au/burn-site/966329
18.01.2022 This week is Fire Action Week, a time when we encourage people in Chewton to understand the fire risk in our area. The lead-up to fire season is the best time to start thinking about preparing your property. It's also a great time to have a chat with family, friends and neighbours about your fire plans. For lots of good advice about planning and preparing for fire, check out the CFA website's Plan & Prepare for Fire page, which you can find at https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare
14.01.2022 "It's not all about the trees." - Our Tip of the Week series of short videos demonstrate some simple things you can do to keep your property safe during fire season. This week we look at the risk of long grass close to your house. For more fire safety tips, visit our website: www.chewtonfirebrigade.wordpress.com.
14.01.2022 Our friends at Chewton.net are looking for photos of people from Chewton all masked up to use in a video they're currently putting together. If you're interested in helping out with a photo of yourself, your family members, or even your pets, you can email them to [email protected], or send them from your phone to John Ellis on 0448 529 144. John has also asked that, if you want to send a photo of someone who's under 18, you please make sure their mask covers the majority of their face and also include a statement that you as a parent or guardian authorise the use of the photo.
11.01.2022 Before... and after! Happy New Year! In 2019 our brigade clocked up a total of 65 call-outs, which works out to a little more than one a week. Only one day into 2020 and we’ve already attended two calls. Thanks to everyone - whichever brigade is your local - for the time, effort and support you have volunteered throughout 2019 and into 2020. Here’s to a happy and safe new year.
10.01.2022 The Fire Danger Period has begun in our local area, starting from December 7. There are now restrictions on what you can and can't do with fire and machinery, including burn-offs, BBQs and using chainsaws or lawnmowers. For a full run-down on restrictions, visit the Can I or Can't I? page on the CFA website: https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/warnings-restrictions/can/. If you have any questions, or anything is unclear, you can also message us here on Facebook or call us on 0408 520 892.
08.01.2022 If you smell or see smoke tomorrow or over the weekend, there are planned burns happening in our area. Check out this post for more information.
06.01.2022 Our brigade has begun its regular pre-season training. All our fireys are participating in burnover drills to get familiar with the equipment and procedures that will keep us safe while fighting fires. It's all going really well and we are feeling confident and prepared for the season.
04.01.2022 More information from the Kalimna burn. The photos they've been sharing are great!
02.01.2022 Here's an update about the Kalimna planned burn from DELWP.
