10.01.2022 Plant based diets & practitioners are often vilified by our own colleagues & in the public eye with people often questioning the evidence that supports plant based diets whilst at the same time claiming there is no evidence that animal products cause disease please be comforted in knowing there are whole organisations of medical professionals who see the medical benefits of plant based diets for treating & more importantly preventing many medical conditions. Award winni...ng neurologists @teamsherzaimd became plant based AFTER seeing the science supporting plants for brain health & the evidence of the harm animal products do to the brain. Plant based practitioners are not a weird tiny minority, they are a growing force who understand the latest scientific & many of them are the most outstanding practitioners in their individual field. @plantbasedhealthprofessionals #plantbasedhealthprofessionals #doctorsfornutrition #evidencedbasedmedicine #evidencebasedpractice #evidencebasednutrition #eatmoreplants #vegan #plantbased #friendsnotfood #joeroganisfullofshit #carnivoredietisdanergous See more

09.01.2022 Posted @withregram @plantbasedhealthprofessionals SWAP OUT ANIMAL PROTEIN FOR PLANT PROTEIN - key message from this new publication . I don’t think we actually need more studies proving plant protein is better than animal protein. In case you are still in doubt, this large study followed more than 100,000 post-menopausal women since the 1990’s & examined the impact of protein source on causes of death . Participants consuming the most plant protein had a significantly red...uced risk of dying from all causes, cardiovascular disease and dementia. The risk reduction was in the order of 15-30% . Processed red meat and egg consumption was associated with a 6% and 14% increased risk of dying respectively. Unprocessed red meat, eggs and dairy increased the risk of dying from CVD by 10-20%. Egg consumption increased the risk of cancer death by 10%. Processed red meat increased the risk of dementia death by 20%. However, poultry and egg consumption reduced the risk of dying from dementia . Substituting just 5% animal protein in the diet for plant protein reduced the risk of death overall and risk of dying from CVD and dementia . The authors conclude ‘Our findings support the need for consideration of protein sources, in addition to the amount of protein intake, in future dietary guidelines’ . I suspect most people won’t be surprised with the findings around red and processed meat but may be surprised that eggs and dairy consumption fared so badly. It is becoming clearer that plant foods are a better choice compared to all animal derived foods with nuts being a particularly beneficial source in this study . The association between lower dementia death with consumption of poultry and eggs is not easily explained and authors suggest lutein in eggs could be beneficial. Also when looking at the dietary data, it seems that consumption of legumes even in the highest consuming group was only 0.9oz which is around 25-30g. Thus healthy plant protein consumption was pretty low in this cohort suggesting the impact is likely to have been underestimated See more
