22.01.2022 Spot Chicks with Picks Student, Andrea Lomdahl in this fabulous Couch Choir rendition of the Killers, "All these things I have done". She sings it along with thousands of other singers from across the world. https://www.facebook.com/407975086232182/posts/1203559470007069/?d=null&vh=e

22.01.2022 This week, in our online Zoom lessons we are embarking on a project to learn some of the songs from the album Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys. The intermediate ukers are learning "God Only Know" - I reckon it's one of the finest pop songs ever written. We're looking forward to the day when we can play together in the same room to see how it sounds. Here's the United Kindom Ukulele Orchestra performing their version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_Oeu3HGVxA

21.01.2022 One of the best holiday music schools for ALL AGES is moving online for the first time. But that doesn't mean you still won't have the best fun with a week of learning from great tutors. I will be teaching the ukulele and guitar this year. Enrol and get four daily ukelele or guitar classes (or both) over four days. Classes are conducted over Zoom and beamed in from Koroit in South Western Victoria but you can be anywhere in Australia or the World to join in. What a brilliant way to start the new year. CLick on the link below to sign up. Yours in strumming, Helen https://fb.me/e/zPPolyzH

21.01.2022 If you're busting to share some original work or a song you've learnt, this is a lovely way to do it. Kira Janowsky is a songwriting student of Chicks with Picks Melbourne and has started running these weekly session online at the Brunswick Neighbourhood House. Pop along and participate or support.

17.01.2022 Well, these two are the reason I scroll through facebook. The best cover of this John Farnham classic I've heard. Enjoy The Tuck Shop Ladies

14.01.2022 This is a beautiful project that my friend, community artist, musician, composer, Rose Turtle Ertler is working on. My friend, Eliza Oakley contributed to the ...project on one of our iso walks in our local park. All you have to do is stand/lie under a tree and record yourself speaking about the experience for 30 seconds starting the recording with words, "Dear Tree". Send it to Rose and she will include it in a gorgeous soundscape. It was a special experience to stop and consider a tree I pass and admire everyday. See more

12.01.2022 Hi Everyone, if you're looking for a jam packed all day musical treat with a serious message, pop into the online Tall Trees Festival tomorrow. There are workshops, performances and talks. All money raised goes to protecting the gorgeous native forests around Warburton. Entry is by donation. Pay what you can afford. Have a great weekend.

12.01.2022 Hi Everyone, looks like we're back online for the foreseeable future. I've created a short survey for students and those interested in strumming their way through lockdown. I thought you may like to complete it in case you'd like to join us for a jam, an open mike session or a lesson. Here's the link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/7GKVKXZ Stay well and keep strumming.

11.01.2022 Here's the lovely Betty France from The Thin White Ukes on the eve of Melbourne's lockdown under the railway bridge in Northcote singing What if by Lucinda Williams. https://youtu.be/tLZ6HuSOMDE

10.01.2022 This is an amazing enterprize and opportunity for young women to express themselves as rock musicians. Three of Chicks with Picks Melbourne teenage students have been through this program and one pops up a few times in the film. Girls Rock!

10.01.2022 We'd like to share a song for you to learn from Chicks with Picks Melbourne's Covid 19 Lockdown 2.0 set list. This weeks song is Green Day's "Wake me up when September ends". You can find a songsheet with chords, words and tabs in the description part of the video. If you have a distortion pedal(even my face is distorted), plug your uke in for that post punk, pre apocalyptic sound! https://youtu.be/nnUkJ7vWayQ

08.01.2022 There are some lovely ISO projects emerging from Australia at the moment. Here's one that features Emily Hayes, her partner Poppy Turbiak and her son Tucker. Emily is a brilliant choir leader and fabulous singer. She is also learning ukulele with Chicks with Picks Melbourne. The video is part of a weekly series put together by the Just Holler Choir. It's a singalong extravanganza. Here's a taster from Em and the gang: https://www.facebook.com/watch/live/?v=873642879709528

07.01.2022 A brilliant song by Barkindji woman, Nancy Bates and Ryan Martin John Folk for Reconciliation week. Check out more of her work at www.nancybates.com

04.01.2022 Students at Chicks with Picks Melbourne have started a spotify wishlist of songs they'd like to learn. It's a ripper soundtrack and great accompaniment to walks in these strange times. Have a listen, follow the playlist and add your song. Enjoy the view if you can't get out. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/21UPJN38X7OE6Xsnn6tO9N

04.01.2022 A fantastic archive of songs collected by Jessie Lloyd sung and written on Indigenous Missions. They can be played on ukulele and guitar and sung with lots of room for harmonies. Let's learn some.

03.01.2022 Ukers, I know there’s lots of instructional videos out there, but we all have a bit more time on our hands at the moment. So, I’d like to offer you one from the Chicks with Picks Melbourne student library. Usually, only students get to see these but I reckon you might enjoy learning one of the songs that we get to play all the time. I’ve chosen Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time for a nice challenge. Let me know how you go https://youtu.be/cXXql-B_gnQ

02.01.2022 It's the first day of guitar classes at the Lake School of Celtic Music Online. Today we're diving right into DADGAD tuning to learn an arrangement of Dougie MacLean's Caledonia. We'll be picking the rainy Sunday afternoon away with this lovely Scottish contemporary folk song. It's not too late to join if you'd like to be part of it. It's online so there's no need to leave the house. Contact [email protected] to enrol. Here's a pic of me diving in to DADGAD!

01.01.2022 Play Music on the Porch Day happens every year. This year it's on Saturday 29th August. It's a great initiative that helps us to stop and pause and play some music. For Melburnians, we've been popped on pause for now so our porch maybe the best place in the house at the moment. Pop it in your diary. https://www.facebook.com/events/600806137490598/
