25.01.2022 My next Upholstery project! A nice bundle of new springs for the seats; another case of what I felt were too few and too soft a spring previously used! This is currently stripped down and up at Authentic French Polishing's place being restored. Rod was enlightening me to why the polish was mostly gone from the cane work (in the photo you can see the cane looks pretty much raw in finish). He said it was originally polished up the same as the suite, but it would have been sprayed on (as most are now days, which is fine), but with the cane the spray doesn't take well, and over time flakes off. He said the only way to do cane properly is to brush it on so it can take properly! This is one of (the many) reasons I've been using my mate Rod for polishing for over 20 years. It's the little things.......

24.01.2022 Arrrggghhhh, so much longer striping a chair down when it's been covered over cover over cover...... #frustration

23.01.2022 Most jobs, to some degree, are a collaboration. Whether it be with me and the client. Or in the case of this latest club suite, with me, the client, Angela Mills from 64 Design who helped the client with fabric choices and castors, and Rod Brown from Authentic French Polishing who repaired and restored the timber blocks and timber veneered sections!

21.01.2022 And now, for something a little different.....

20.01.2022 A couple of old family chairs covered in some beautiful fabrics from Warwick Fabrics Australia deserve a little time in the sun!

20.01.2022 Another collaborative effort from a little while ago. Pleated skirts removed (still a shirt on the rocker to hide the base), and new legs fitted. Fabric from Angela at @64 Design, polishing by Rod at Authentic French Polishing. One of my fav suites to work on.

20.01.2022 One bedhead, two bedhead....

18.01.2022 Lovingly restored reproduction Jacobean cane sided suite. Timber and cane work stripped, repaired and restored by Rod Brown from Authentic French Polishing, Toowoomba. Including brushing the finish on the cane so it adheres better than spraying (ever seen polished chairs with cane where most of the finish on the cane has come off?) Katrina picked a beautiful fabric for her suite, still retaining some of its traditional charm but with a more modern floral design. Really happy with how this one came up!

17.01.2022 Just like to send out a thankyou to the local upholsterer who's told people I've retired and moved out west. I won't repay the sentiment in kind #shakinghead

17.01.2022 And now for something a little different!

16.01.2022 I love it when they're going back together!

16.01.2022 Green fabric stitched together with red thread....... I 'spose if I was out of green thread, red would have been my second choice too......... ...... ummmm

13.01.2022 I'd like to know what was going through the mind of the sadistic so and so who came up with the concept of an overlocker and the manner in which it is threaded and the way the needles work!

12.01.2022 Winning, is when you cut your twine to tie in the seat springs and you have exactly the right amount, pretty much down to the centimetre! #thelittlethings

12.01.2022 Since in the cuisine world "deconstructed" has become a thing, here are some photos of a "deconstructed" club suite! Not that comfy to sit on me thinks....

11.01.2022 And now for something completely different.... rebuilding the inner spring unit within one of my own seat cushions. Always wanted to try this, and way too time consuming to make it cost effective for a customer. The spring units in our mid range sofa had started to disintegrate within 5 years as they were made from a spun bonded material rather than something tougher. Is had them replaced once under warranty, but one was already breaking down again withing a couple of years, funny enough from a seldom sat on position. So in gonna try and fix it up myself. Making the replacement section out of Calico and will then make the surrounding cover from Hessian. I do have an inner spring seat cushion though, and can still get my hands on some inserts. Expensive to make, but the elite when it comes to a seat cushion!

10.01.2022 Drilling out the old socket castors, then gluing in dowel so I can fit the new screw in Chrome ones! #fridayfun

10.01.2022 Winning, is when this is the leftover of the length of twine you cut to tie in the springs; no wastage #thelittlethings

09.01.2022 Getting my old fashioned on....

08.01.2022 Taking a modern 25 year old sofa which had nothing really wrong going on inside, but regluing the frame, and adding some extra bracing, and removing the old metal spring clips and installing clipstrip, which will remove the squeaks and allow for easier spring repairs if any problems present in the future! #renew

07.01.2022 There's only a 0.3cm difference between the widths of the back cushions for the single chairs and the 3 seater; but every cushion needs to know it's place!

05.01.2022 Everyone has their favourite tools in their workshop. This is my fav dustpan and brush! Sad, I know . I have no idea why, but I'll walk across the shed to grab this one when I had a perfectly good one sitting beside me!

05.01.2022 The moments after you realised you forgot the zip slider...... Doh

05.01.2022 Pretty much as far as I'm concerned, the "creme de la creme" of seating. My customer wasn't happy with how the chairs sat prior, and they were pretty bad, sinking a long way. Yes, the webbing had sagged a bit. But prior they had too few and too small a gauge spring to make a really comfy seat. Matched with a high density foam and dacron cushion, this seat should now have them snoozing in no time at all!

04.01.2022 When one cutting table won't cut it...... improvise!

04.01.2022 Even on newer furniture, sometimes the old ways are best!

03.01.2022 Not every job is complicated, but they all deserve a pattern match!

02.01.2022 With internal zippered flies used to separate upper and lower cushion inserts, you'll often see the zipper is the same length as the fly. But that means each end of the zipper is under stress, and sometimes the pressure will mean it unzips itself. I like to make the zipper longer on both ends than the fly. Firstly, it's just easier to do it up. But secondly there is less chance of the fly coming undone as there is no pressure at all at either end of the zip. It's #thelittlethings
