12.01.2022 Workplace Health and Safety Queensland and the Electrical Safety Office are investigating a fatal electrical incident that occurred on Tuesday 9 August 2016 at an avocado farm near Tolga on the Atherton Tablelands. A 28 year old male worker later died after he received an electric shock when the pruning tool he was using when came into contact with 22 kV conductors. Could this happen anywhere your employees are working?... This alert is to remind you and your fellow workers to be aware of overhead powerlines and respect the safe exclusion zone distances around them. The exclusion zone is the minimum safe distance to the powerline, and varies with voltage. Always bear in mind where powerlines are located and the length and materials of any tools you may be using to avoid accidental contact. The best way to control the risk of contacting powerlines is to avoid working underneath or near them. Other controls to consider may include relocating live electric lines away from work area, where feasible, or having the line de-energised while work is being done. In some locations you can make powerlines more visible by having line markers or flags installed and using ground markers and warning signs to make your workers more aware of the risk. The use of safety observers or spotters will also help avoid plant and equipment crossing into the exclusion zone.
08.01.2022 Safety switches are often confused with circuit breakers and fuses, but they perform different tasks. Safety switches monitor the flow of electricity through a circuit and turn off the power in a fraction of a second if a leakage of current is detected. Safety switches provide personal protection against... electric shock. Circuit breakers protect an electrical circuit by quickly cutting power when there is a high current fault or overload that may cause a hazard. See more
