25.01.2022 What impact is COVID-19 having on children? Check out the first report from COVID unmasked, a project members of our team have been working on with our colleagues from The University of Queensland https://www.childrens.health.qld.gov.au/covid-19-unmasked/
23.01.2022 A new survey is looking to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on younger kids and why its important not to assume that they will simply bounce back. Written by Dr Mira Vasileva and A/Prof Eva Alisic.

22.01.2022 Great to have a youth co-design element in this COVID study we are involved in that is being led by the Burnet Institute. Please spread the word to any young people who may be interested.
22.01.2022 Bear is back in Berry's level 3 lockdown #3. Picture books are a useful resource for teachers and parents when tackling difficult or sensitive issues. Because COVID-19 has come upon us so quickly, there hasnt been time to commission, write and publish good quality childrens literature for this purpose. To fill this gap, Carol Mutch, a professor at the University of Auckland has put her educational and story-telling skills to work to tell the story of a toy bears time in lo...ckdown. Check it out!
22.01.2022 @CydaAu has released their report "Not even remotely fair: Experiences of students with disability during COVID-19" Schools were unable to provide or reduced dramatically the support for students in their education during the first COVID-19 lockdown with implications not only on learning outcomes but for the student's mental and social health & wellbeing. https://www.cyda.org.au//not-even-remotely-fair-experience

20.01.2022 We stand in solidarity with those fighting for equality, equity and justice both here and abroad. Black lives matter. Aboriginal lives matter. It starts early and takes all of us to make a positive change. A great infographic from the US: http://www.childrenscommunityschool.org

19.01.2022 CYDA has released our Report on CYDAs Education Survey 2020: As you may expect from the title: Not even remotely fair: Experiences of students with disability ...during COVID-19, schools were unable to provide or reduced dramatically support for students in their education during the first COVID-19 lockdown. The report shows 61% of respondents said they had received inadequate support so they could be included in education during remote learning. More than half said students with disability during the remote learning period: Did not have regular contact with their school to ensure the learning was accessible. Received learning materials from their school that were inaccessible. Were not adequately supported in their education. Of most concern was the complete withdrawal of vital supports to enable students to participate in education on an equal basis to their non-disabled peers including: 72% of students felt more socially isolated from their classmates (e.g. being excluded from working with their peers, not invited to Zoom/virtual classroom sessions). This is crucially important for inclusion in education. 44% of students lost access to learning support staff such as aides, or had support hours dramatically reduced. 38% of students lost access to supervision in their education 30% of students experienced reduced access to education equipment that helps them learn (e.g. particular technologies, furniture). The pandemic was also having a significant impact on mental health: just over half said either they or their student had suffered from poorer mental health due to remote learning. 19.01.2022 Childcare during the Victorian COVID-19 lock down has been challenging for many families and our colleagues at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education want to hear about these experiences. If you are Victorian and have a 1-6 year old child for whom you usually use childcare, click on the link below to have your voice heard. They would like to hear from as many people as possible, so please share!
19.01.2022 If you are aged between 18 and 25 years old and have a previous experience of a natural disaster as a child or teenager, you may be able to help us to help children and teenagers affected by the recent bushfires and the COVID-19 pandemic. But we know these new events can be a painful reminder of past difficulties and we dont want to cause you stress so no problem at all if you feel it is not possible. The Youth Views on Disaster Recovery project seeks to develop support r...esources for children and teenagers that will be delivered to communities affected by disasters and COVID-19 in Australia. Were seeking 8 10 young adults who can attend two 2 3 videoconferences in groups or individually. Each meeting will last approximately 1 hour and will take place between May/June. This project is a collaboration between Smouldering Stump (a registered charity supporting children affected by natural disasters), the University of Melbourne and Australian Red Cross, and is funded by a Perpetual grant. It is being carried out by Dalberg, a global impact-focused consultancy firm, on behalf of the Wellcome Trust, a leading research-charity based in London. It is to be filled out by people between the ages of 10 and 24 years old and should take 5 min to complete.

04.01.2022 MYAN Australia has developed 'A day in the life' video series where young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds share the real narratives of them staying safe and healthy, supporting each other, their families and communities during COVID-19.
04.01.2022 Children need to be supported, nurtured and loved so they can reach their full potential. Yet in Australia, children as young as 10 can be arrested, charged and imprisoned. This is well below the minimum age of 14 recommended by the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child. In just one year across Australia close to 600 children aged 10 to 13 were imprisoned. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children make up 65% of children this young in prisons. It is time to #RaiseTheAge of criminal responsibility. This Monday 27th July, federal attorneys-general will consider whether to raise the age to 14 - if you support this change head to www.raisetheage.org.au to sign the petition.
04.01.2022 The past six months has seen Australians confront a catastrophic bushfire season followed immediately by a once-in-a-generation pandemic. Many children particularly in regional Victoria and New South Wales witnessed bushfires firsthand while others have seen images in the news of homes destroyed and livelihoods lost and now the effects of Covid 19 here and around the world. With so much disruption, what can parents and guardians, teachers and allied health professionals do to create supportive communities and build resilience and optimism in our children? Join us this Thursday to hear from expert panellists including our Director Prof Lisa Gibbs.
