19.01.2022 OSTEOARTHRITIS and exercise We all know exercise is good for us, but what about when you suffer from joint pain or stiffness? The answer is still yes. Research has found that exercise helps maintain and can improve muscle strength and joint mobility. It can even help to decrease pain and muscle tension!... So, what types of exercise should YOU do? This is a great question! One best directed to people with specific training in this area (ie, not really me ), such as: Your GP Exercise Physiologist Physiotherapist Personal trainer There are activities that are great for all levels of fitness though such as walking, swimming and dancing! Go for activities that you enjoy. Start slowly, and for shorter periods, do it more than once! If you are interested in managing your arthritis with movement, I strongly suggest you consult one (or more) of the above professions to get you going with an exercise program.

07.01.2022 OSTEOARTHRITIS This is what is classicly thought of as old person's arthritis. However, it can affect young people too! This type of arthritis affects the whole joint; bone, cartilage, muscles and ligaments. Commonly, osteoarthritis affects the knees, hips and fingers, although it can occur in any joint. ... This disease tends to develop slowly and is usually noticed as pain and stiffness in a joint(s). Risk factors for osteoarthritis include jobs/hobbies that have repetitive movements (bending, kneeling, squatting, heavy lifting for example), history of joint injuries, family history of arthritis, being overweight. Your doctor is the first stop in diagnosing arthritis, they can assist you with treatment options. There is no cure, but the disease can be managed with a combination of treatments such as : Pain relief and anti-inflammatory medications Physiotherapy (and massage!) Exercise programs Mobility and supportive devices Weight loss programs Surgery There are some great and informative websites around too for more information including https://arthritisaustralia.com.au/

07.01.2022 Frequently asked questions in the massage room: Will I be "fixed" in one session? Sadly, the answer is it is unlikely. For most of us, we endure our pain and carry on with our muscle tension until we are forced by pain or lack of mobility to address the situation. This may take a week, a month, six months.. ... One hour of massage is not likely to restore you back to full movement and no pain. What is more likely is restoration of SOME movement and a gradual reduction in pain. Stretches and exercises at home will also help get things going in the right direction. Regular appointments over a few weeks to a month is recommended to give your body time to heal, while stretching and strengthening exercises will allow your muscles and joints to operate the way they were designed to.
