18.01.2022 Following up from our discussions about shells and hermit crabs, we decided to use some of the money raised from our mothers day stall earlier this year to purchase some hermit crabs. A few children helped set the enclosure up this morning and couldn’t wait to see our new additions this afternoon. They were purchased from Kellyville Pets and we got a great information brochure.... This afternoon the older children were introduced to our new friends. We were very surprised to see that Crawler had already changed its shell. The names the children and Olivia chose are: Wormal Jimmy Crawler Hermie Gary We took them outside and let them play around on the softfall. We are excited to look after our new pets.
18.01.2022 The Week that was We learnt the Dhurag word for hello (Worimi) and goodbye (Yanu) and used these words when signing children in, and when children were leaving the centre. Some children were even introducing these words to their parents. We sat together and talked about the colours in some of the Indigenous books we have at the centre. We talked about how the colours were made (and how there were no stores to access readily available materials for paint) the child...ren had amazing ideas on this. We learnt more words later in the week (Worimi Ngini - hello, how are you?) (Gai - please) (Didjurigur - Thank you) and talked about feelings.. feeling good (Budaryi) and feeling bad (Wiri) #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek2020

17.01.2022 During NAIDOC week we’ve began looking at the significance of bees to Indigenous Australians. We learnt that honey was highly prized and often given as gifts, used medicinally and used for the formation of mouthpieces for Didgeridoos. We laid down a blanket and waited for bees. Here are some of the pictures we took! #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek2020

11.01.2022 Tuesday morning Charlie went out to fly a paper plane and found a huge insect. He named it Jerry. Some of the children were excited to touch it and to hold it. Some were a bit uncomfortable to touch it but watched from afar. We were able to see it close up and eating an ant. The children were talking about how it was camouflaged.... Eventually Olivia put it on the bottle brush tree where it sat happily. : Jasmin

10.01.2022 Here are the children interacting with sea shells as part of science week last week - the theme- into the deep blue. Some of the children measured the shells with a ruler and spoke about the sounds that they can hear from the shell. There were discussions about whether it was the sea or the vibration in their ears. Jayan played music with the shells.... Talk turned to what animals had shells, which then. turned to Hermit crabs. The children have asked if we can get some hermit crabs. They are very excited.
