A young carer is a person under 25 years of age who provides, or intends to provide care, assistance or support to a family member with an illness, mental health condition, disability, or addiction. It is estimated that there are 2-3 young carers in every classroom. During this National Carers Week, we would like to send a special 'shout out' to young carers. 24.01.2022 Australian Red Cross Lifeblood needs more than 2000 Queenslanders to donate blood or plasma between Christmas and the new year. If you can, please give the gift of life this festive season. Book your donation at https://donateblood.page.link/JPZ7 #GiveBloodShareLife

20.01.2022 Queensland Children's Hospital patient Matilda received her gift of life four months after being listed for a heart transplant and former patient Jordan was 16 when he got 'the call' about the donor liver he desperately needed. I admire and respect the families that make this selfless decision. It’s truly an amazing example of humanity at its finest. Matilda's mum. 18.01.2022 This week's #SmileOfTheWeek belongs to four-year-old Elijah from Samford Valley. Elijah was born with a heart condition (pulmonary atresia with a ventricular septal defect). Last week he had his third open-heart surgery at the Queensland Children's Hospital to close a hole in his heart and replace a shunt. His first was when he was just two weeks old. The great news is Elijah shouldn't need any more cardiac surgeries for at least seven years - which his family is very happy about! He'll be with us a little while longer until he's feeling strong enough to go home but he's feeling better (and stronger) every day. Keep smiling, Elijah! #HeartKid #HeartSurgery #ChildrensHospital HeartKids

18.01.2022 Our friends at Australian Red Cross Lifeblood urgently need 16,000 additional people to give blood or plasma by the end of November. In particular supplies of O+ and A+ blood have now dropped to less than two day’s supply, meaning stocks of Australia’s two most common blood types are at risk. Every year, the Queensland Children's Hospital uses more than 7500 units of donated blood products (blood, platelets and plasma) to treat sick kids, so even if you don’t know what blood type you have, we still need you! If you can please book an appointment at www.donateblood.com.au #LifebloodAU

16.01.2022 What is a CT scan? A CT scan, also known as a CAT scan or computer tomography, takes X-ray images from a lot of different angles and in very thin slices. All of these X-ray images come together to produce the CT scan. These scans can be done on any part of the body. Watch this video to find out more about what it’s like to have a CT scan at the Queensland Children’s Hospital.

16.01.2022 The Queensland Children’s Hospital emergency department is busier than usual. Our team is working hard to see every child as soon as possible, but wait times may be longer than usual as we see the sickest and most injured children first. If you need to bring your child to ED, please come prepared with snacks and books or toys to make the wait more comfortable for you and your child. It also helps us maintain a COVID-safe environment if only one parent or carer brings a chil...d in, wherever this is possible. As always, your local hospital and GP are well placed to care for your child close to home. For less urgent matters, please consider taking your child to your local GP. They will refer you to your local hospital or the QCH if needed. Thank you for your continued support in keeping our patients, families and staff safe.

"I love that I get to come to work every day to help others. Working with kids has shown me how brave they can be, and how resilient they are when life throws them challenges. One of the most rewarding parts of my job is when I connect with a patient and they ask for me to look after them again the next day."
