08.01.2022 The statistics on child abuse, specifically child sexual abuse, are profoundly disturbing. Up to 30 per cent of children experience some form of childhood sexua...l abuse and between five and ten per cent experience severe abuse (Ogloff, Cutajar, Mann & Mullen, 2012). Even more disturbing, children with disabilities are up to seven times more likely to be sexually abused than their non-disabled peers (Briggs, 2006). This does not include those children who have been exposed to pornography, a form of child sexual abuse which is on the increase. Exposure to pornography can negatively impact a child’s emotional and cognitive development. With 14% of all sexual assault victims reported to law enforcement agencies concerning children under the age of 6 years (Snyder, H), it is imperative abuse prevention education start for children as early as possible.
