25.01.2022 This is so fun!
24.01.2022 If youre finding these strange new circumstances were in at all challenging, these tips on coping in self isolation from a Psychologist are really important. We and especially kids are not supposed to know how to deal with everything thats happening and how fast things are changing, but there are things we can do to ease the burden for ourselves and our little ones. I know we will be trying to implement many of these in our household, and Id love to hear whats working for keeping you sane too. Rylie
23.01.2022 This is a ball is not what it seems. If youve read it, youll know, if you havent, this book is a must have for entertaining pre-school aged kids.
23.01.2022 We talk about books a lot as part of our work building the communication of little ones. The reason we focus so much on reading and books is because of just how significant a change the research tells us it can make on the communication skills of a child. Children who are regularly read to from infancy go on to have bigger vocabularies, better early social skills, higher language skills and better literacy outcomes. For such a small change to add to your daily routine, reading to your little one comes with some enormous benefits!

22.01.2022 Today were sharing one of our favourite lift the flap books. Dear Zoo is great for little ones across all stages of communication development, and one of Rylies favourites to use in therapy.
21.01.2022 On the Blog: The 7 stages of Speech Therapy. A very common communication difficulty we see here at Childs Play are speech sound errors. Children who experience difficulty with their speech production have trouble using the correct sounds (e.g. replacing k with t, like tat for cat). There are a number of different types of speech delays and disorders, and intervention for each will look slightly different based on their underlying issue. For the most part, however, intervention will follow the same hierarchical approach. http://www.childsplayspeechpathology.com.au/the-7-stages-o/
21.01.2022 All of Eric Carles books are amazing, but this is one of Rylies favourites for teaching body parts and actions.
21.01.2022 On the Blog: How many words should my child be saying? Probably the most common question I am asked by parents is how many words should their child be saying at a given age. A lack of words is one of the earliest warning signs for parents, that their childs communication is not developing typically. http://www.childsplayspeechpathology.com.au/how-many-words/
21.01.2022 On the blog: The importance of verbs and other word types! Need a hand picking some words other than nouns to teach your little one? Here are a heap of wonderful non-noun words to work on with your late talker! http://www.childsplayspeechpathology.com.au/the-importance/
20.01.2022 Parents and friends, what resources have you found that have been a huge help while self-isolating? Were putting together a big list of resources to help you keep everyone entertained, make homeschooling easier and help you cope during the new challenges were all facing, and we want to know what you think we should include! Leave a comment or send us a message with your ideas
20.01.2022 Happy Tell A Joke Day! Whats your best joke?
19.01.2022 Hurray for our gorgeous little friend Ellie and her new word "pappadam"! Ellie has been working hard on copying new words, and routines like songs and people games have been wonderful for helping us build this skill. Routines are so powerful for communication because kids think they're fun (hello motivation) and their predictable nature makes it that little bit easier to attempt a new word or skill!
19.01.2022 At this stage were still operating as normal tomorrow, but are hearing there are lots of schools closing. Parents, just a reminder to let your Speechie know if your childs school will be closed. Be safe everyone!
18.01.2022 We're Hiring! We are looking for another passionate, caring and vibrant Speechie to join us in supporting little ones on the Central Coast. This role will be casual to start, with a view to growing to part or full time in the future if desired, providing services for children from birth to 5 years of age. The work we do here is pretty special and we're excited to be growing our small team to help even more little ones find their voice. If you might know someone who would be interested in joining us, please share this post and help us spread the word!
17.01.2022 On the Blog: What speech errors are never age appropriate? Speech sounds develop slowly, as a childs ability to coordinate and produce sounds develop. Because of this, there are often a lot of errors that are age appropriate for little ones and no cause for concern (check out our handy guide to speech sound development). There are, however, some speech errors that do not occur at any stage in typical speech sound development, and are red flags for a more serious speech disorder. http://www.childsplayspeechpathology.com.au/what-speech-er/
17.01.2022 Parents do not cause communication delays! Every new family that comes to work with us brings along their own feelings of guilt that their child is experiencing difficulty learning to talk. Most parents blame themselves for the difficulties their child is having, and I so often hear parents talk about the things they "should" have done. The truth is, parents dont cause communication delays by doing or not doing something. Some children just find learning to communicate harde...r than others. The great news, however, is that parents are the best tool out there for helping children with communication delays! Every strategy, technique and tip we teach parents when they work with us is a step towards talking and communicating for their little one.

09.01.2022 So very proud of my little friend Master J for a successful first teletherapy session. We had a ball doing some puzzles and Lego together online while we practised our speech sounds! This last week has been a steep learning curve for our therapists and families alike, and to see our clients enjoying their video sessions while making progress towards their goals just makes my heart swell. Hope youre all safe and well x
09.01.2022 The only wrong way to play is to not do it! With many of our parents making the wise decision to keep kids home from school and preschool, theres a lot of pressure to make sure theyre still doing something. Theres an amazing amount of resources out there for learning activities, but one of the best things we can be doing right now is just getting on the floor, following your childs lead and seeing where the play takes you. This article explains a really great technique fo...r getting involved in high quality play and how play can be an important stress reliever for kids (and us too). https://www.abc.net.au//coronavirus-covid-19-chil/12074628
08.01.2022 Happy Fathers Day to all of our wonderful dads!
08.01.2022 As most of our families are now aware, we have decided to move all face-to-face sessions to online video sessions. Doing so will help us to ensure were putting the health of our clients, team and community first, while ensuring we can continue providing therapy in these crazy times. We know this will be a big transition, and were so thankful to all of our wonderful families who are embracing online sessions and adapting with us. Kate and I are excited to take on the new challenge that is teletherapy and to continue to help our little friends communication skills grow!

05.01.2022 Spent a lovely morning at Explore and Develop Wamberal providing some early language screening assessments and chatting to their knowledgeable staff about communication! Parents, if you think your childs preschool would be interested in having us visit and provide screening assessments (at 50% off their usual cost, too), let me know!
05.01.2022 Did anyone see the segment on yesterdays Today show about the rescue dog calendar? If you did you may have seen photos of my handsome furbaby Otis, his rescue mates, and some not-too-shabby shirtless co-models that were taken as part of the project. If you are looking for a gift for a dog lover, or for a gift that gives back to an important cause, consider buying one of the calendars available at Central Coast Animal Care Facility - Gosford Pound or www.bennettpr.com.au
04.01.2022 Mess in the clinic is often a sign of a good time! This mess making can actually be part of a very important stage of play development. Destructive Play is one of the earliest stages of play development that your little one will go through. In this stage your child will engage of in lots of knocking down, dumping out and pulling apart of things. For parents this stage of play often feels like their child is a mess making machine, but destructive play is incredibly important for your child to build their awareness of cause and effect and object permanence, and build up the fine and gross motor skills needed before they move into the next stage, known as Constructive Play.
04.01.2022 Its the last week of school and Speech for the year! 02.01.2022 ... It turns out the little one I was working with had always refused to even attempt to say her own name before, and it was something theyd been working on for a long time. That was one of the earliest moments that I knew this job was special!
