23.01.2022 This imposing pair of Royal Doulton Chine Gilt vases stand 415 mm or 16.5 inches in height. Chine Gilt Ware was decorated by pressing pieces of lace work onto the soft surface of the piece as it came off the potters wheel, leaving an intricate pattern. In this case the pieces were then hand painted with white flowers on a blue ground and then gilded. Chine Ware and other wares were made at the Lambeth factory in London, where they were designed by the leading Doulton artists,... but executed by the artists assistants. The production of this type of ware was never mass produced, and runs might only approach 1000 pieces. Their marks on the base show that these vases were decorated by A Tranter, Ellen Palmer, L Marriott and an unidentified assistant, with the design number being X6011. There is a repair to one of the flanges at the top, and some slight loss of gilding. The pair weigh 5.1 kg unpacked. 23.01.2022 These "Cupid Awake" and "Cupid Asleep" framed photographs have been hand coloured, highlighting the hair, cheeks, lips and the arrows - most of these photographs were left plain. The frames measure 280mm by 280 mm and are the original frames. The two photographs were copyrighted by the photographer M B Parkinson of New York in 1897. The model was Josephine Anderson, the daughter of a friend of Parkinson. She died in the 1970's. They are in very good condition and would date from around 1900. 22.01.2022 Contained within the olive wood covers of this Flowers from The Holy Land souvenir book are 11 thick cardboard pages, 10 of which have pressed flowers arranged on them. The flowers are from different vicinities and are arranged in little vignettes, with tissue paper leaves to protect them. The captions on each page are in Hebrew, English, German, French and Cyrillic. It measures 135 mm (5.25 inches) in length, 87 mm (3.5 inches) in width, and is 22 mm (.75 inch) thick. There is a little damage to the front cover, but overall it is in good condition. 22.01.2022 A lovely needlework map of England and Wales, showing the counties as they were in the late 1700's, and also showing partial coastlines of Ireland, France and Scotland. Around the outside of the map are the longitudes and latitudes of England and Wales. The height of the shown needlework area is 540 mm and the width is 470 mm. The overall frame measurements are 750 mm high and 680 mm wide. The map would have been printed onto the fabric, and the young seamstress would then practice her sewing skills by following the outline. The name of the sewer is not shown, but it is dated 24th August 1787. There are some small repairs to the fabric, but overall it is in very good condition. 20.01.2022 This very decorative plaster wall plaque features a raised profile of a medieval woman to the centre, surrounded with a wreath of laurel leaves tied with ribbons. The diameter is 380 mm (15 inches) and it is 35 mm (1.5 inches) deep. There is a small chip to the rim as can be seen in the photo at about 2 o'clock. I think this piece would date from the 1920's. 20.01.2022 This Chinese export mother of pearl dish is shaped as a leaf and engraved with a simple leaf like pattern inside an engraved border. The length is 127 mm (5 inches) and the width 100 mm (4 inches). It is in very good condition and displays a lovely play of colour (I've tried to show this in the various photos). It would date from the late 1800's. Mother of pearl can be moulded or flattened after immersion in hot water. 19.01.2022 The cartwheel penny was circulated in 1797 as the first British copper penny. The obverse has a portait of George III and the reverse has a seated statue of Brittania. This fairly worn specimen has been converted into a locket with facility for two photographs inside. It is 40 mm in diameter, mounted in white metal, and weighs 50 gms. 18.01.2022 This beautifully made wooden paper knife features as the handle, a violin scroll end and peg box. Joined to this is the long blade which is probably walnut, or possibly olive wood. Whether the handle is made from the scroll end of a violin, I don't know-perhaps it was made for a musician or a music lover. The length is 396 mm (15.5 inches) and it is 32 mm (1.25 inches) wide where the handle joins the blade. It is in wonderful condition. Datewise, probably the last quarter of the nineteenth century. 18.01.2022 This very pretty miniature porcelain jug is decorated on either side with hand painted flowers on a lemon ground, reserved on a cobalt blue ground, and finished off with gilding. It stands 56 mm (2.5 inches) high to the top of the handle, and has a diameter of 52 mm (2 inches). There has been a repair to the foot and some loss of the gilding. 18.01.2022 This very decorative large copper jug features a pressed crocodile skin effect by way of decoration. On the base are stamped the number 8, indicating that it holds 8 pints, and the letters JS&S B. It was made by J. Sankey and Sons of Bilston, near Wolverhampton in the West Midlands of England. It stands 355 mm (14 inches) high and is in very, very good condition. It dates from around 1900. 16.01.2022 This large E G Greenway flower trough is decorated on both sides with a central figure of a medieval woman, flanked on either side by stylized leaves. The E G Greenway pottery was set up in Blackburn, Melbourne in 1949 by Herbert Greenway in memory of his late wife Ellen Grant Greenway. This trough is the larger one using this shape and it is glazed in a tan colour. It measures 470 mm in length, 160 mm in height and 125 mm in depth. 15.01.2022 This large flower trough is attributed to E G Greenway Pottery of Blackburn in Melbourne. It is decorated on both sides with swimmers and fish at play. Both ends feature fish. It measures 460 mm in length, 125 mm in height, 130 mm in depth and weighs a hefty 4.5 kg. The E G Greenway pottery was set up in Blackburn, Melbourne in 1949 by Herbert Greenway in memory of his late wife Ellen Grant Greenway. 13.01.2022 This small Doulton Burslem lamp base was decorated by George Fernyhough, who was at Doulton Burslem from around 1887 until 1905. The decoration consists of hand painted flowers and foliage outlined with raised gilding on a buff coloured ground. This pattern (A4996) was first issued in the late 1880's and the shape (Rd, 153609) was registered in 1890. In the latter part of the 19th century, Doulton was one of the largest suppliers of ceramic lamp bases. This base stands 160 mm... (6.25 inches) from the silver plated mount at the base to the top of the brass lamp fitting. When you add the glass chimney the height is 327 mm (12.75 inches). There is some crazing to the body, and some slight damage to the brass fitting and the chimney. As the Doulton Burslem mark on this piece was altered in 1891, this piece can be dated to 1890. 12.01.2022 This Royal Worcester cup and saucer is decorated with a rich blue and white pattern of dragons, which is nicely set off by the gilding to the edges and handle. 10.01.2022 This serpentine shaped enamel trinket box is attributed to the firm of Samson of Paris. Samson were well known for producing replicas (or fakes if you are feeling less generous) of many items of previous times. The hand painted decoration on this box is done in the style of Eighteenth century enamel ware. The hinge features a protruding lug at the rear to stop the lid opening too far. This is a feature of Samson boxes, something not seen on Eighteenth century English boxes. T...he width is 135 mm (5.25 inches), the depth 85 mm (3 5/8th inches) and it stands 60 mm (2 3/8th inches) high. It is in very, very good condition and would date from around 1880. Enamelling was essentially painting with glass. Coloured glass, ground to a really fine powder was mixed in a solution and painted onto a base, usually copper. 10.01.2022 This very pretty hand painted porcelain christening mug has been attributed to Royal Worcester, and dates from around 1870. On either side of the handle are hand painted sprays, one of flowers and leaves, and the other of strawberries and strawberry blossoms. They are closer to the handle than usual to allow room for a name or an inscription to be put between them. It stands 73 mm (3 inches) high and has a diameter at the top of 70 mm (2.75 inches). 09.01.2022 Hailing from the time when you made your own butter is this Cherry and Sons wooden butter churn. Turning the crank handle made the internal paddles revolve, agitating the separated cream to form butter. This one stands 420 mm high, is 390 mm wide, 280 mm deep and weighs 8 kg. In good original condition, and still working, it would date from the late 1800's. E Cherry and Sons was formed by Edward Cherry (1830-1910), who together with his wife Anne, emigrated from England in 18...55 and set up a workshop in Gisborne in Victoria. They continued well into the 20th century, making amongst other things, items for cheese production and wooden telephone boxes. 07.01.2022 This glass dome, or shade, is a rare survivor and holds the mementos from a late Victorian wedding. It would have taken pride of place on a mantlepiece, or perhaps a chest of drawers. It stands 430 mm high and is 300 mm across the ebonised wooden base. The bride's silk headdress sits on a buttoned cushion of red velvet, held in a gilt brass frame. Surrounding the cushion are gilt brass good luck tokens-oak leaves and acorns denoting strength and longevity, the bluebird of hap...piness and daisies. The single mirror indicates that the engagement prior to the wedding had been for one year. The winged cherub holding a shoe-another good luck symbol-would have come from the wedding cake. 07.01.2022 This souvenir pin cushion is decorated on both sides with reverse painted scenes from Kings College Cambridge. On the front is a view of the chapel, and on the reverse, a depiction of the college's coat of arms. Reverse painting is done on the underside of the glass so that the glass protects the painting from wear. In this case very fine strips of foil were applied to the glass then painted over, giving an impression of the sun glinting on the building. Sandwiched between the two glass panels is the pincushion which was once covered by a rich purple velvet, now sadly very worn. The diameter is 48 mm (1.75 inches) and the thickness is 13 mm (half an inch). Overall this piece is in very good condition. 02.01.2022 A sterling silver bladed fruit knife made by Joseph Willmore of Birmingham in 1835. It measures 80 mm (3 1/8ths inches) in length when closed and 142 mm (5.5 inches) when opened. It weighs 20 gms. The scales feature carved decoration and a silver cartouche engraved with the name E Grellier, and the blade is decorated with a geometric design on both sides. The opening and closing action is fairly soft, and there is a slight springback when closed. Sterling silver fruit knives... were a must have item over many years for those that could afford them. Fruit knives with silver or gold blades were more resistant to fruit acids than were the steel blades of the day, and are anti-microbial as well. These knives were particularly important if you had bad teeth (after the introduction of plentiful amounts of cheap sugar, many people suffered from bad teeth) when you could cut your fruit into small pieces. 02.01.2022 A very nicely wheel engraved glass sweetmeats bowl dating from the middle of the nineteenth century. The main decoration with a dove holding boughs of fruit and foliage in its beak, sitting atop a roundel with a diapered innner ring. Around the rim is a band of stylised flowers above swags and pendant flowers. The whole piece sits on a square stem and base.
