09.01.2022 Toxicology Tuesday 3 common household items that are lethal for your feathered friend. -Avocados, they contain Persin a toxin that causes cardiac problems in birds. The symptoms include the inability to perch, gastrointestinal irritation, vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory distress, congestion, fluid accumulation around the tissues of the heart and even death. -Teflon (non stick pans/self cleaning ovens, )birds are susceptible to a respiratory condition called "teflon toxicity" ...or "PTFE poisoning/toxicosis." Deaths can result from this condition, which is due to the noxious fumes emitted from overheated cookware coated with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). This chemical is found on most non-stick cookware and appliances, some stain repellant products, and other household items. -Caffeine, it may cause increased heart rate, arrhythmias, hyperactivity and even cardiac arrest in birds. 07.01.2022 Pan getting ready to be a blood donor hero. With the current mouse issue we are seeing a large number of rat/mouse bait poisonings. Due to the poisons function, many patients require a blood transfusion to recover.

06.01.2022 5 minutes with your Vet- Dr Margaret Schubert I started working at CVS: January 2020 (newbie)... My qualifications: Bachelor of Veterinary Science from JCU Most memorable experience as a vet: I was involved in the rehabilitation of an injured echidna and despite his prickly attitude i thoroughly enjoyed it. I own: A gorgeous Kelpie called Maxi and a cute rescue cat called Noodle. Which breed of dog do you think is most misunderstood: Chihuahuas are thought to be very bitey (some are), but some are so sweet. The pet I would recommend for a young family: A chicken, when tamed can be very interactive and fun, plus they give you eggs. I love my job because: I love meeting new patients who are unsure of vets and doing everything I can to win their hearts, including treat bribery. I recently learnt that: Not particularly recent, but it makes me smile. When an alpaca is giving birth it is called "unpacking". I once treated: A chicken with bumble foot that required toe amputation. The secret to a happy pet is: Lots of love and attention from their owners and regular visits with us to maintain their health. Something you don’t know about me is: I don't like beetroot.
