25.01.2022 CEREMONIAL DAGGER - Tang dynasty (618 - 906 AD). Carved from a mid-green nephrite jade, The handle is in the form of a bird. The elongated chape has the head of a ram with long curling horns on each end. The blade has been carved to resemble a crab claw, and is... decorated with cloud patterns and a serrated edge. 25.01.2022 GUIBI - Han dynasty (c. 206 BC - 220 AD). The pale green nephrite jade has been fashioned into a combination of religious and ceremonial significance. A bi decorated with water dragons carved in low-relief sits atop a gui (sceptre) decorated with clouds at the pointed end. The base of the gui depicts a mythical creature, with wings raised, holding the bi. The reverse is decorated with three water dragons.... Height: 31 cm. Price: $3 750.

22.01.2022 KUEI TABLET - Longshan culture (2300 - 1900 BC). The kuei, also known as gui, sceptre, and ceremonial blade, is believed to be one of the six ritual objects used in funeral rites. It was said to be green in colour, symbolizing the element of wood, and pays homage to the region of the East. The green colour symbolized spring vegetation growth. This kuei is trapezoidal in shape. The butt end is narrow with a conical hole drilled from both sides. It is decorated on both sides ...with three raised bands below the perforation, followed by a bird standing above two human heads. This pattern has also been attributed to the Shijiahe culture, which ran concurrently. The other side displays eight characters of bird script carved in fine raised relief below the bird motif. The blade end of the kuei is straight. Length: 31.6 cm. Price: $2 000

21.01.2022 DAO - Longshan culture - Shang dynasty (c.2500 - 1050 BC). This ceremonial blade, dao, is quite unusual in shape. Most are straight at both edges, where this one is concave at the blade end. The top edge is straight, with three protrusions decorating it, and seven holes drilled from both sides, along the edge. The sides of the blade are angular and notched, with one side longer than the other. The jade is bevelled down to the blade edge. Both sides are decorated with inc...ised lines running across the surface in sets of three, and diagonally to form a criss-cross pattern at both ends. The central symbol is of two crested birds, standing back to back, carved in low-relief. Blades of this style have been documented from the Erlitou culture, also with criss-cross incised lines decorating the surface, and seven holes along the top edge. Length: 39 cm. Price: $6 500.



19.01.2022 CEREMONIAL DAO BLADE - Zhou dynasty (1122 - 476 BC). The dao was originally a reaping knife. The ceremonial dao blade featured here is a very fine example in nephrite jade. The jade shows considerable alteration on both the surface and in the colour. The blade is thinly carved with a curved top, sloping sides, and long bevelled cutting edge. The workmanship is extremely fine, featuring birds in the open-work pattern at the top edge and the fine raised line work on both si...des of the blade. Seven conically drilled holes run along the top of the blade. Large ceremonial jade dao blades have been treasured in both Chinese and Western collections. Length: 29 cm. Price: $1 500.

14.01.2022 AXE - Hongshan culture to Shang dynasty (c. 3500 - 1047 BC). The beautiful two-tone nephrite jade is typical of what is found around Nieuheliang. The dragon head is similar to those of the well known C-dragon of the Hongshan culture. The neck of the dragon widens and flares out into the shape of the axe, with a large hole drilled through the middle.... Height: 16 cm. Price: $1 200.

14.01.2022 BIRD AND CONG PLAQUE -- Liangzhu culture (c. 3000 - 2000 BC). The nephrite jade is of the large-grain variety, commonly used during the Liangzhu culture. The plaque symbolizes a cong or t'sung with a bird sitting on the top edge. The sides are bevelled and the surface of each side displays four registers alternating between a crowned anthropomorphic mask and a zoomorphic mask.



11.01.2022 BIRD-BI-HUANG MOTIF -- Liangzhu culture (c. 3000 - 2000 BC). The large-grained tremolite plaque displays important motifs of the Liangzhu culture. The most important of these three motifs is the bi or pi which is believed to signify Heaven. A bird sits atop the bi, while a huang sits on the bottom. ... Each motif is decorated with anthropomorphic masks. The reverse side is plain.

11.01.2022 SEAL WITH BIRD SCRIPT -- Tang dynasty (618 - 906 AD). Each side of the pyramid shaped seal is decorated in low-relief. The two largest areas of the pyramid display a dragon on one side and a phoenix on the other. The dragon and phoenix generally symbolize a good marriage. The opposing smaller sides of the pyramid show a phoenix... embraced by two serpent-like dragons. The base of the pyramid is flat on each side and is surrounded by a thunder cloud pattern. 09.01.2022 BI WITH FLUTED PATTERN - Hongshan culture to Shang dynasty (c. 3500 - 1122 BC). The two-tone green and red-brown nephrite jade bi is thick in the middle and thin around the outer edge. ... 02.01.2022 WATER DRAGON PLAQUE - Han dynasty (BC 206 - 220 AD). Originally pale green nephrite jade, this beautiful openwork plaque is in the form of a sinewy water dragon. The front views the dragon from above, showing the fox-like face, single striated horn, and long curling tail, also striated. The dragon also displays curlicues protruding... around it. The reverse side shows no detail in the carving, but is carefully smoothed and beveled on all edges. Length: 15 cm. Price:$1 500



02.01.2022 YUE AXE - Shang to Western Zhou dynasty (1766 770 BC) The nephrite jade was originally green, and shows a great deal of alteration. The narrow butt end has three conically drilled holes. The axe widens down to the blade end, which curves outward and forms a curl on one side. Two bands of rope pattern decorate both surfaces of the... blade, with a row of four conically drilled holes between them. A narrow, thinner edge protrudes from one side of the blade, with seven conically drilled holes running along it. All the drilling has been done from both sides of the axe. Height: 19.3 cm. 02.01.2022 LARGE YUE AXE - Liangzhu culture (c. 3000 - 2000 BC). The nephrite jade used is what is referred to as 'large grain tremolite'. The reddish tinge on the jade is thought to be staining from cinnabar. This type of jade was widely used during the Liangzhu culture which existed around Lake Tai. Deposits were thought to have been lost over time as the water rose in Lake Tai, hence it is not found to have been used after the Liangzhu culture. The axe is decorated on both sides w...ith the Sun Ren (God-like deity) holding a large animal mask, with an eye motif on each side of the deity. Little of the fine line engraving is still visible. A large perforation has been drilled from both sides at the butt end, leaving a slight ridge where the drilling meets. Height: 30 cm. Price: $2 500
