23.01.2022 The Commonwealth War Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, the Somme, France, where my children’s great great grand uncle, Joseph Oliver fought with the Australian Armed Forces - after fighting at Lone Pine in Gallipoli during World War I. Our boat ‘JOliver’ is named after Joseph Oliver. A number of members of our family fought for Australia during the wars and I am proud to say that my mother trained as a nurse at RPA Hospital Sydney during WWII.... I took this photo when we visited this place and the John Monash war memorial last year as part of my research for our family history and my next book. So much has happened since then. Our thoughts are with those suffering at the moment and the people who fought bravely and made sacrifices so that we can live in beautiful Australia today. We are a fortunate country. Lest we forget.

20.01.2022 Happy Easter everyone. Wishing you health, love, safety and peace this Easter and remembering the very first Easter and it’s message of hope and salvation.

18.01.2022 Red sun in smoky hazed skies over Sydney. Is this the future we are leaving future generations of our Australian families?

17.01.2022 Here is another political story in my family, this time in Australia. Lai Kam Tai, Lai Fook (my grandfather) and Lai Foo were brothers operating businesses in Cooktown and Thursday Island, Far North Queensland for decades from the 1870s. Lai Foo’s daughter Linda married into the See Kee family. Charles See Kee (Linda’s husband’s brother) was one of the first Australians of Chinese heritage to hold an Australian public service role.... He joined the Australian Air Force and underwent radio training, returned to Darwin in 1945 and found Chinatown razed & looted. He was a prominent Darwin Chinese leader involved with the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the Darwin Chinese Recreation Club and the Ethnic Communities Council. He was awarded NT Territorian of the year in 1983. Charles Darwin University offers a scholarship in his name. The Charles See Kee Leadership Scholarship is for students who have resettled in Australia as a humanitarian or refugee entrant. The scholarship helps students to further employment and leadership outcomes. #australianhistory #australianstories #familyhistory #book https://lnkd.in/gbS-6KS https://lnkd.in/gS59MWH https://trove.nla.gov.au/work/23370659?q&versionId=28305865

09.01.2022 TRIP HOME Parched land, Dusty road, Miles of straight highway,... Gumtrees guide the way home. To an old country town, Where a red brick railway station platform, Sits alongside rail tracks now leading nowhere, Once proud, now stands abandoned and forlorn. A butcher shop and bicycles, Rose and fruit laden trees, Small tidy town, A sense of close community. Of sweet childhood memories, A tidy white timber house, Of plums so sweet, The townfolk came to meet. Remembering back 70 years - of carefree childhood days, A home made with love by a builder and dressmaker, and four young kids sitting on the wooden porch, Near the front door. One now since passed, one now lost in thoughts, one now in confused endlessness, the youngest one left to remember - for the rest. 0f riding a bicycle down that country lane long ago, with a gift for Mum, a flower in bloom, and of stories to tell the next generation, Toddler Finley, baby River and little June. Of yabbies and Murray Cod in the Billabong, Being rescued from near drowning, In the muddy creek near the weir, in Jerilderie. Bitter sweet memories Of the ties that bind us together, Our family, we remember. Alison Choy Flannigan (Baldwin reunion Jerilderie 2019)

09.01.2022 Falling rain (2020) Though we are separated by miles, by space, I still remember your face,... Your smile, Your warm embrace. What has happened? As sickness quickly swallowed the world, Suffering and pain, In the sunshine and falling rain. In places I have travelled, Near Gaudi’s beloved Bassilica, Near the Spanish steps in Rome, Loved ones dying alone, And closer to home. Thousands are falling ill, losing jobs, Clouds of darkness rise and creep across the globe, It breaks my heart to see uncertainty, suffering and pain, In the sunshine and the falling rain. At times like this, I pause to thank the stars above, For what matters most, grateful for family, health, home, happiness and love. Gratitude, For those who care with kindness for others, The most vulnerable, For those who are struggling, For those alone. People caring for people, Doctors, nurses, carers, Shining lights of selfless service, for those in suffering and pain, In the sunshine and falling rain. When this is over, though the world be changed forever, I’m going to hug the ones I love, And dance in celebration, together, Embracing in joy and laughter, drink a toast In the sunshine and under a rainbow in the falling rain.

03.01.2022 For those who have read my book Chinese Whispers, In Search of Ivy, Tim Lai, Elder of the Lai Clan of Pat Heung (my mother’s clan), descendant of Lai Kam Tai (my grandfather’s brother, formerly of Cooktown, far North Queensland, Australia) has recently been elected a councillor of Pat Heung South, Yuen Long District in the recent Hong Kong elections. My book recounts Tommy’s story from Hong Kong to Cooktown. A family of doctors, lawyers and politicians. More to come when I h...ave time to write my second book. The Hong Kong council elections are important because 117 seats are reserved for district councilors on the election committee, the 1,200-member body that chooses Hong Kong’s chief executive. The recent elections have been very political. Commentators are saying that this election is one of the most important elections for Hong Kong. This is history in the making. https://lnkd.in/geX_6FG . #goldrush #familyhistory #books #goodreads #australianhistory https://www.info.gov.hk//gene/201911/25/P2019112500201.htm https://worddisk.com/wiki/Yuen_Long_District_Council/ http://www.chinesewhispersbook.com/ https://www.bookdepository.com/Chinese-Whispe/9780648002024
