19.01.2022 Frozen Shoulder Frozen shoulder is the result of chronic inflammation (inflammation not caused by infection) of the soft tissue in the shoulder capsule, the synovial sac, tendons and other shoulder muscles. It results in adhesions both inside the shoulder joint and outside of it, hindering movement. Sufferers of frozen shoulder are usually over 40 years of age. It is usually brought on by physical labour. Symptoms include shoulder pain and limited shoulder movement. This is ...especially obvious when extending the affected arm out, circling the arm and moving it behind one’s back. As time passes, the shoulder muscles atrophy, more adhesions develop and pain increases. 1. Acute and chronic shoulder injuries Frozen shoulder is prevalent amongst athletes, chefs, educators, drivers and those who work on computers, as well as well as manual labourers. This is because they extend their arms out, hold them up and do internal rotations of the arms, or they sustain such positions for long periods of time, and thus strain the tissue in their shoulder joints. 2. It can be brought on by other medical conditions Cervical spondylosis (degeneration of the spinal column), heart disease due to hardening of the coronary arteries, pneumonia, cholecystitis (inflammation of the gall bladder), trauma to the upper arm, paralysis on one side of the body, long-term intravenous transfusions and surgery in regions around the shoulder can lead to decreased activity of the shoulder. As a result, the shoulder joint capsule can shrink and adhesions form, making the shoulder stiff. This can lead to a frozen shoulder. People in the early stages of frozen shoulder are not willing to move their shoulder because they are afraid of the pain. This makes things even worse, as the inflammation works its way more deeply into the shoulder tissue. 3. Frequent massage is necessary to treat a frozen shoulder. Cupping is the best treatment for frozen shoulder, as it restores energy flow to the region, improves blood circulation, reduces muscle pain and releases the tendons which have formed adhesions.
