16.01.2022 Safer Care Victoria today released its review into chiropractic spinal manipulation for children under 12 years. Some Australian newspapers have published stori...es following release of the Safer Care Victoria (SCV) review. Unfortunately, selective reporting drawn from the extensive SVC statement has skewed the narrative to emphasize caution where no evidence for the need of any additional caution has been uncovered. The report is now available on The SVC website and can be accessed at the following link : https://www.bettersafercare.vic.gov.au//chiropractic-spina It is important to note that the media stories reflect the feelings of the Victorian Health Minister alone, while the other state and territory ministers are yet to consider the SVC findings. The SVC review involved the conduct of a systematic review of the literature as well as a detailed public consultation process. To bring a degree of balance to this debate Chiropractic Australia President Rod Bonello today made the following statements - 1. The detailed investigation brought forward not one specific confirmed instance of proven harm to any infant or child. 2. The safety record of chiropractic treatment for infants and children is one of the very best for any therapy for any age group. 3. Thousands of paediatric consultations are delivered by chiropractors each week. 4. The report found overwhelming public support for continued access to chiropractic care for children and infants. 98.4% of respondents indicated that their child was improved after chiropractic treatment. 99.1% of respondents indicated that they were either ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with information provided by the chiropractor about the benefits of treatment. 5. This level of satisfaction by parents who sought chiropractic care for their children is exemplary. 6. High quality evidence for the benefits of chiropractic care for children and infants is inconclusive. That is, there is a lack of evidence NOT evidence that chiropractic care is harmful or inappropriate. 7. Chiropractic Australia has called for the funding of research into spinal manipulation in children to become a priority area in the ensuing funding cycles. We are very pleased that our recommendation has been accepted and promoted in the report. While we acknowledge that there is still a great deal of work to be done by chiropractors and others in developing the best health care solutions for parents and their children, we are greatly impressed with the findings of the SVC review. We agree with many of the implications pointed out by the executive summary, also, and would also like to see these findings applied equally to Physiotherapists, Osteopaths and Medical Practitioners who utilise manipulation in this population. However we remain disappointed in the continued negative spin placed on these findings by the Victorian Health Minister and those media outlets who have failed to properly interpret the report.
