15.01.2022 Does you #baby get a good dose of TUMMY TIME in the day? . Well its very interesting, but since the adoption of the "Back to Sleep" campaign (which reduces your... risk of SIDS so please keep going!), there has been a trend in the reduction of active tummy time. . But why is tummy time so important? . Being on our tummy activates very specific muscles - the muscles of our back and neck. This is important as they are a very strong source of stimulation for our growing brains. . Plus, being on our tummy lets us lift our heads up, re-orient our vision, and start to see the world around us! . In fact, a 2020 review on this topic has just come out, and they state that their evidence "further confirms the importance of tummy time to enhance infant development". They saw benefits in: . - Motor development - Healthier BMI - Potential prevention of developing plagiocephaly (head asymmetry) . And this is just in 30 minutes per day! . So what if your bub can't handle tummy time very well? Well, there may be a reason for that. How is their tummy? Is the floor too cold? Might they have a bit of a restriction somewhere in their musculoskeletal system? . Could be worth investigating if you are finding your bub doesn't like being on their tummy too much! . . #askdrchristian #tummytime #babies #development #baby #child #children #pediatrics #paediatrics #chiropractic #chiropractor #health #happy #tummy #growth #growing #research #2020 #somethingpositivefrom2020seemsunlikely #motor #grossmotor @chirochildhealth #parenting #parents #mummies #melbourne #jama #wollongong #green #prettypicture #justarandomhashtag See more

02.01.2022 Any mums or dads out there that can relate?

01.01.2022 Interesting. . Just 30 minutes of tummy time recommended per day. . 30 minutes! ... . But what is tummy time? Well, it's pretty much as it says; time for your bub to be on their tummy. But the key thing here is it is ACTIVE time on the tummy, not just sleeping. . Tummy time has been recommended by many countries around the world, in here in Australia the current (although 2010...) guidelines recommend: "physical activity particularly through supervised interactive floor-based play in safe environments should be encouraged from birth" with activities such as "reaching and grasping, pushing and pulling, and crawling spread throughout the day during awake periods". . This is quite important, as "studies have demonstrated a p[ositive association between tummy time and gross motor development" (REF IN PIC). . But how did we come to find this? Well, if you go back 30-odd years... Wait.. I'm older than that... 40-odd years (eek) parents were always plonking babies on their tummies. Turns out this is a risk factor for developing SIDS (bad) so we now sleep babies on their backs. In the reference noted in the picture above (Hewitt et al), she stated "infants placed supine to sleep had slower achievement of their motor milestones and an increased occurrence of head shape abnormalities". Head shape abnormalities, such as plagiocephaly (head asymmetry) have now been associated as a RISK FACTOR FOR DEVELOPMENTAL DELAY - one study (Martiniuk 2017) listing head asymmetry as a 30-40% risk for delay! . What I would love to look at further is the list of reasons why a bub may dislike tummy time. Clinically, gut disturbance from something such as cows milk sensitivity and problems with the neck are the two most common reasons I would observe. . So how do you go with tummy time? Does your bub like it or do you get the grizzles after a few minutes? . . . #tummytime #babies #bubs #development #growing #brains #plagiocephaly #chiropractic #chiropractor #chirochildhealth #askdrchristian #wantirna #posting #spottysocks #guidelines #recommendations #research #themoreyouknow #30minutes #active #health #healthy #happy #chirolife See more
