09.01.2022 *NEW* Farm Risk Rebates Available Many Australian farmers remain exposed to an unacceptable risk of financial loss caused by drought, fire, hail or other potential perils. The need for a widespread uptake of Multi-Peril Crop Insurance to safeguard the nation’s agricultural future has been well established, and an incentive that will encourage every Australian farmer to purchase the right insurance product for their business is long overdue. Now, farmers will be supported to t...ake-up natural disaster insurance with the $20.2 million Managing Farm Risk Program, unveiled last week by Deputy Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce. Eligible farm businesses can access a 50 per cent rebate, up to $2,500, on costs incurred in securing, or attempting to secure, agricultural insurance. This includes retaining the services of a licensed insurance broker to provide independent, professional advice. While the program falls short of the $29.9 million fund recommended in last year's Agricultural White Paper, it is a positive development. Rebates will be available over the next four years, or until the funding allocation runs out. Annual funding limits also apply, so farmers should be advised to take advantage of the program at the earliest opportunity. An eligible farm business is one that operates as a sole trader, trust, partnership or private company; usually has at least one member who derives at least 50 per cent of his or her income from the farm business; is in the agricultural, horticultural, pastoral, apicultural or aqua cultural industries; is wholly located and registered for tax purposes in Australia, and is not a public company; has total annual cash receipts of less than $2 million; and has a written offer or refusal from an insurance provider for a new insurance product aimed at mitigating production risks. Rebates are available for new or additional policies covering a peril or climatic event that the farm business was not insured against within the last five years. Both single and multi-peril insurance policies are eligible, as are parametric products based on rainfall or other climate factors. The funding cannot be used to reimburse insurance premiums or subsidies. A single rebate is available for each eligible farm business, and those who receive funding may become ineligible for other government programs. Farmers should retain independent taxation and financial advice. For more information about the rebate program, please visit agriculture.gov.au/mfrp or contact us.
