07.01.2022 BOOKER T. & THE M.G.s - GREEN ONIONS (in colour) On this date in 1962, Booker T. & the M.G.s released the singler GREEN ONIONS, (August 11th 1962). Described ...as "one of the most popular instrumental rock and soul songs ever" and as one of "the most popular R&B instrumentals of its era", GREEN ONIONS is a twelve-bar blues with a rippling Hammond M3 organ line by Booker T. Jones that he wrote when he was 17, although the actual recording was largely improvised in the studio. The track was originally issued in May 1962 on the Volt label (a subsidiary of Stax Records) as the B-side of "Behave Yourself" on Volt 102; it was quickly reissued on August 11th 1962 as the A-side of Stax 127, and it also appeared on the album Green Onions that same year. The organ sound of the song became a feature of the "Memphis soul sound". The video here is a film of the 1967 Stax/Volt Revue tour of Europe, considered by soul music fans to be one of the greatest lineups of artists ever to grace the concert stage: Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Eddie Floyd, Arthur Conley, The Mar-Keys and the legendary Booker T. & The MGs. This concert footage captured the April 7th 1967 concert in Oslo, Norway near the end of the three-week tour, when all the artists were at their very peak. The performance of GREEN ONIONS features the incredible line-up of Donald Duck Dunn (bass), Booker T Jones (organ), Steve Cropper (guitar) and Al Jackson (drums) Sadly Duck and Al are no longer with us. Ive upscaled and colourised the original black and white film.
