18.01.2022 National Threatened Species Day is this weekend, 7th September. The date is significant because on that day in 1936 the last Tasmanian Tiger died in Hobart Zoo.... With the death of this animal the thylacine species officially became extinct. 60 years later, the 7 September was declared National Threatened Species Daya time to reflect on the thylacine's sad demise and how similar fates await other native plants and animals unless we do something to stop it. This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the rediscovery of the Gilbert's Potoroo - Ngilgyte (Potorous gilbertii), Australia's most endangered mammal and the worlds most endangered marsupial. Previously thought to be extinct, this medium-sized mammal is slightly smaller than a rabbit and bears some resemblance to a bandicoot. They eat the fruiting bodies of underground fungi (sometimes called "truffles") which make up over 90% of the diet of Gilbert's Potoroo, all year round. Threats to Potoroos include fire and feral animals. You can help Potoroos. Don't them them become anther statistic, we can change this. Become a member of the Gilbert's Potoroo Action Group, donate or purchase merchandise and support the research by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation & Attractions.
