09.01.2022 When I started Taekwondo in 1950, overthrowing or tripping an opponent, using your legs then grabbing any part of the opponent and attacking, pushing or hitting them on the neck via a knife hand action was part of common practice when training. This demonstrates that Taekwondo is a martial art that involves the use of the entire body. Taekwondo also involved the stick-fighting art (Bongsul) as part of training. These original Taekwondo methods slowly declined in modern Tae...kwondo practice. This was unfortunate and so I started to teach my students Bongsul in the 1980’s. This is when the Taekwondo Bongsul philosophy began. With Taekwondo Bongsul, I have systematically included Bongsul as a sub divisional part of Taekwondo, through the process of formulating a style or technique. The terminology of Taekwondo Bongsul is reflective of the conventional Taekwondo terminology and the training process of Taekwondo Bongsul patterns and sparing have been divided into beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Taekwondo Bongsul applies techniques which are practical and useful in real life situations. The process of learning these techniques will not only capture the learner’s interest in the art but will also provide skills on how to self-defend and counter-attack an opponent. Not only does Taekwondo Bongsul train you physically but it also increases mind control and concentration.
