06.01.2022 January 1961 Utsunomiya Japan, a truly important historic event. The First International Taekwondo competition in history, between Korean Taekwondo (called Gong Su Do) and Japanese Karate During this historic event, there were no diplomatic relations between the 2 countries.... 5 men are chosen to represent Korea to compete in this unprecedented international event. 3 men are chosen as reserves. Grandmaster Cho is part of this team. This event was a very exciting time in Korean History and for the chosen competitors The competition was a one day event. The crowds were full of excitement to see the results. Korea or Japan who will be the winner.. This competition in 1961 was the first time in history that chest guards were worn in a Taekwondo competition 1st-round Korea is disqualified due to contact to the opponents head 2nd round, Korea (Grandmaster Cho) Scores 4 - Japan 0 3rd Round, Korea and Japan Draw 4th Round, Korea 1 Japan 2 5th Round (last round) Korea 4 Japan 0 Korea wins! KOREA 9 JAPAN 2 Grandmaster Cho remembers vividly a moment immediately after the competition ended. The Japanese Karate team was defeated but, very curious of the Taekwondo kicking technique. The Korean team (5 men) started to show and share with the Japanese Team (5 men) one on one, face to face, different kicking styles and techniques. This is a special memory. This trip to Japan, Grandmaster Cho recalls, was a very exciting one week trip. Some highlights of the trip were; -Performing a Taekwondo demonstration at the Japanese Military Headquarters in Tokyo and the University of Tokyo -Seeing colorful civilian automobiles -Seeing many televisions -Seeing a huge computer, the size of an entire room when visiting the University of Tokyo -Visiting sights in and around vibrant Tokyo -Spending time with the Japanese Karate team -A visit with the President of Korea Yun Posun at the Blue House in Seoul Korea (prior to the departure to Tokyo in 1961) -Dinner with the Head Korean representative Dr Yu Jin Oh in Japan at that time holding talks with Japanese representatives regarding the future between Japan and Korea The names of the Officials and Competitors, in the First International Korean Taekwondo Team in 1961 Head of Team - Sok Ki Yeo Assistant Head of Team - Kwe Byong Yun Team Adviser - Oh Chung Kim Team Adviser - Ki Whung Photographer - Eun Chol Ha Captain - Sae Hyok Park (competitor 1) Competitors 2.
