25.01.2022 This is my friend Harold! Not the guy in the man lift but the one behind him in the wheelchair on the sidewalk. He stays in the nursing home across the street f...rom where we’re building. Since day one when I arrived on this job site I’ve noticed him sitting there every morning from 7 a.m. he takes lunch when we do and doesn’t leave until I shut the crane down and head out. I originally thought to myself, 'He’s just a curious old man and wanting to enjoy his days outside vs. being cooped up in his room.' Well after a couple days, I myself got curious, so I walked over and introduced myself to him. We had a long conversation, two and a half hours worth, but long story short Harold is nearing the end. His heart valves are clogged and some disease has been eating at him for years. (I don’t know the name of it) and when he was able to work before everything had happened to him health wise he was a crane operator. He said he enjoys seeing what he use to love to do for a living and never thought he’d be able to see or be around a crane again and let alone be so close to see one in action. He has family, two daughters and a son who haven’t seen him for the last seven years he’s been in a nursing home. So I made Harold a deal! Originally, he wanted to be put on payroll! As I explained to him that wasn’t possible I quickly came to what I thought was a fair agreement. Our deal is this, Harold ran cranes for over 50 years and no matter how good you think you are at something there’s always more to learn. So I told Harold every day after work I’ll sit with him for a little bit so he can critique me and judge me on how I did for that day (give him something to talk about that he enjoys) while I also get to learn from him and In return I would bring him a black coffee every morning for as long as I’m here and buy him lunch twice a week from wherever he chooses. He didn’t skip a beat before, ‘ABSOLUTELY!’ came out of his mouth. I guess I’m writing this post because if I would have never walked over to him, I would have never gotten to know him. I’m thankful to have the opportunity to make this mans last days enjoyable. Filled with purpose and to be able to help smile again

23.01.2022 It was just another Monday last week when Angela received a call from Southern Cross Emergency with the view to partnering with them to provide care for an individual who was being transported home from New Zealand via air ambulance. This was not Angela’s regular gig Angela’s task was to nominate a competent RN who could start the next day in order to satisfy the DHHS COVID-quarantine requirements, to source PPE, and to create a well-linked chain of communication between herself, Southern Cross Travel Insurance Australia, the DHHS, and our CBNA staff. It has been almost a week now and we are happy to say that Angela rose to the occasion and this individual has been in safe hands and is being looked after exceptionally.

15.01.2022 A TRIBUTE TO MY BROTHER In 2020 I learnt that life should never be taken for granted. Although, it was not because of all the untimely deaths in the world, due to COVID-19. It was because I lost my brother living in Kenya in the midst of a global pandemic. During this time, I had the responsibility of managing a 100-bed, COVID-ridden Aged Care facility in Melbourne. I was caught between a rock and a hard place. Do I leave my responsibilities, put my mind in a rut and abandon ...all these residents that clearly need support? Or do I face the harsh realities of life? It was quite the predicament. As harsh as it sounds, I did not let my brother’s death faze me. I had nothing to gain from weeping about it, but everything to gain by helping the people that needed me the most. I know that is what my brother would have wanted, as death is nothing, but to live defeated is to die every day. It matters not how a man dies, but how he lives, and my brother lived a life of kindness, love, and laughter. I learnt that death is a challenge. It tells us not to waste time It tells us to tell each other right now that we love each other before it is too late. To my dear brother, I miss you. Your legacy is every life you have ever touched. #myagencylife #cbnagency

13.01.2022 HOW SOANA ENDED UP IN QUARANTINE Twenty-twenty was supposed to be a great year for everyone - and that is exactly what it was for me. I would have never thought that at the age of 19, I’ll be going to Victoria, for the first time in my life, to help fight a global pandemic. Do not get me wrong, the pandemic has been horrible to everyone, and we will not forget the lives lost. However, the learning experience was undeniable. It was just another day working in a small-town age...d care facility in Wyong, NSW when a friend of mine who was already with Chris Barnard asked me If I wanted to travel to Victoria to help an aged care facility that had been severely affected by the pandemic. As big of a risk it was, I did not want to miss the opportunity to help a community that I knew were suffering. The next day itself, I hopped on a plane and landed in Melbourne, and checked myself into a quite decent hotel. A special thanks to the DHHS for all their efforts as all travel arrangements were organized by them. Funnily enough, I had to be a partial vegetarian for a few months as the accommodation did not have a meat selection. This was all part of the experience for me. My new-found workmates and I worked day in, day out for 3 months before the facility was close to having 0 active cases. As I’m writing this now in my home in NSW, after 2 long weeks of quarantine, I tend to think about how tiring this whole thing was, BUT then, I am reminded of all the smiles and the laughter that came as a result of all our hard work during this strenuous tenure and to think it was all worth it. So to sum up, yes, 2020 was a great learning experience for most of us. There is honestly no greater gift than giving. 11.01.2022 A great ending to a not-so-great year. We have all had challenges this year, to say the least, and this gathering was to celebrate those champions that made these challenges significantly easier - our frontline workers. (Some may say we celebrated a bit too much this night...)... We cannot stress on how much these carers and nurses helped those aged cares, the residents and their families. This is the LEAST we could do for our heroes, and we believe that’s still not enough for the service they have provided. However, we need to be optimistic. So, let us all celebrate, as we all deserve a break. Thank you again, to all of the frontline workers. Let’s hope for a better 2021!
10.01.2022 This legend is Ben. His girlfriend works as a nurse in the ICU at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. He sat outside the hospital today with drinks and snacks for a...ll of the nurses in celebration of International Nurses Day! What a bloody legend! On behalf of the 4500 nurses who work for Melbourne Health, thank you Ben! This gorgeous story was posted to the Humans in Melbourne group by Audrey Sherwen with a slight edit from me #Melbourneiloveyou
