23.01.2022 What a perfect time for this little guy to show up in the Royal Botanical Gardens. Chan Tui, or cicada shell is a common ingredient in itchy skin formulas. A lot of allergies going around in Melbourne at the moment with all this crazy weather.

23.01.2022 Pelvic, period and lumbar pain can often occur from poor circulation somewhat attributed to by anatomy. This can cause blood retention. 1. At the bifurcation of the abdominal aorta, the right common iliac artery exerts pressure on the left iliac vein, causing congestion. 2. The right ovarian vein directly enters the uterine vein, but the left ovarian vein connects with the renal vein and congestion occurs there. Pain and Kampo: T.Oyama, G.Smith

22.01.2022 Symptoms are like lights on the dashboard of your car. They tell you something inside is not working, about to break or broken. We can learn a lot through observation. This is what Chinese medicine is based on. Abdominal diagnosis is something used in Chinese Medicine and Japanese Medicine (Kampo) to let us in on what might be going on inside the body. Here we have a glomus or stuck feeling under the sternum. This tells us something is wrong with the digestion, probably... the stomach and probably the duodenum. We can use herbs and diet to address this. Common formulas are: 1. Ren Shen Tang 2. Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang 3. San Huang Xie Xin Tang 4. Gan Cao Xie Xin Tang 5. Sheng Jiang Xie Xin Tang 6. Tiao Wei Cheng Chi Tang 7. Da Chai Hu Tang 8. Mu Fang Ji Tang Diet Therapy May include: sweet and bitter foods such as- Bitter: parsley, kale, mustard greens Sweet: rice, sweet potatoes, carrots, liquorice. #kampo #chinesemedicine #diet #abdominalpain See more

22.01.2022 Is it a sausage? No, its a pulse picture. There are around 28 different standard pulses with multiple variations. This is a floating pulse. Fu Mai . A floating pulse moves at the superficial level of the flesh. Like touching a miniature elm fruit, it is light as a feather. Appearing in fall, this reflects well-being. But with chronic disease, one should be especially vigilant. The significance of this pulse is fro...m commonly wind invasion (recent cold/flu), or Yang or blood vacuity. If Yang is deficient, the floating pulse lacks force, where in blood deficiency the pulse is thin. There are 26 other pulses that can occur concurrently with a floating pulse. We see the first three in the second picture: 1. Floating and slow (wind cold plus damp) 2. Floating and rapid (wind-heat with URTI) 3. Floating and slippery (wind-phlegm/heat/rheum). @ Chris Eddy Melbourne Acupuncture Clinic See more

20.01.2022 So I had a bit of a sweet tooth today and decided to do something a bit crazy. Kampo Cola!! I used the citrus base of the original Cola with vanilla plus, a great winter formula- Gui Zhi Tang , Keishoto. I didnt think it would be any good, but Ive got to say, its not too shabby at all!#kampo#cola#chinesemedicine#sweettooth#herbstastegood#melbourne @ Chris Eddy Melbourne Acupuncture Clinic

18.01.2022 Splashing and sloshing sound on palpation over the stomach suggests a water pathology. This will most likely be reflected as a wet and watery tongue, a deep and tight pulse, dizziness and indicates a Fu Ling and Bai Zhu based formula like the ones in the following page. @ Chris Eddy Melbourne Acupuncture Clinic

18.01.2022 Cough and cold time again. Well, our local nurse assures is that Mitsuki will catch over 150 viruses by the time shes two years old. Havent quite referenced that impressive number, but Id say it feels like it! So, were trying out a new Chest Rub this week from our friends at Quiescence, North Fitzroy. A great blend of Chinese herbs in a quality base of Shea, Apricot oil, Safflower and Beeswax . Nice and aromatic.

17.01.2022 Stiff neck, chills, sore back, floating and tight pulse = kakkonto (GeGenTang) = TaiYang = goodbye all symptoms in 1/2 hr with one 1.5g sachet!!

15.01.2022 Mushrooms have been used in Chinese herbal medicine for over 2,000 years. Modern research is discovering some promising uses as an adjunct to other therapies for cancer.

15.01.2022 Gui Zhi Jia Ge Gen Tang, Ge Gen (kudzu) for the stiff neck, but there is sweating so we dont actually use Ge Gen Tang. Gui Zhi Jia Ge Gen Tang (SHL 14): Gui Zhi 9-25 Sheng Jiang 9 Bai Shao 9-15 Zhi Gan Cao 6... Da Zao 12 dates Ge Gen 12-40 (lifts qi in yin channels {tai yang originates from kidneys} and unblocks stagnant Tai Yang meridian) SS: Stiff neck and back, Functions include tonifying, ability to raise the clear, ability to release the muscle layer, enhances blood circulation to the head and face, anti-spasmodic effect on the neck and back muscles Used to treat head and neck stiffness and spontaneous sweating type conditions (if no sweating, use Ge Gen Tang). Line 14: Tai yang disease presents with stiff nape and back, and there is sweating and aversion to wind instead of cold. Cinnamon Twig Decoction plus Pueraria (gu zh ji g gn tng) should be prescribed. Synopsis Differentiation and treatment of zhong feng syndrome with severe qi stagnation in tai yang channel in tai yang disease. Clinical experience of ancient and contemporary practitioners Chen Rui-Chun, a famous scholar and physician from Jiangxi province, has observed: This formula works quickly for stiffness on the neck due to improper sleeping position and is also effective to deal with other discomforts on the neck. Recently, I have added unprepared Astragali Radix (hung q), Curcumae Longae Rhizoma (jing hung) and Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix (qn jio) to treat hyperosteogeny in the cervical vertebrae, and it can alleviate the symptoms and signs.#kampo #chineseherbalmedicine #cold #flu #kraciejapan #melbourne @ Chris Eddy Melbourne Acupuncture Clinic See more

14.01.2022 (keishitou) or Gui Zhi Tang . Used for many reasons. Again, like yesterdays formula GeGenTang, it can be used in the first 2-3 days of catching a cold. Lets have a look at some lines from the Shang Han Lun (1800 year old text where these formulas were recorded). Gui Zhi Tang (SHL 12,13): Gui Zhi 9 Sheng Jiang 9 Bai Shao 9... Zhi Gan Cao 6 Da Zao 12 dates SS: For Tai Yang illness with headache, fever, sweating, and an aversion to wind, Gui Zhi Tang masters it. The pulse will generally be loose and floating, although some scholars debate this as being essential. Dr Huangs view on the pulse is: A pulse that is floating, deficient, lax, rapid, or large without force. It may also be floating in the distal position, but weak in the proximal. Tongue: A tongue body that is pale, with a thin, white coat. SHL, Line 12: Original text translated [The pathology of] zhong feng syndrome in tai yang disease is floating yang and weakness of yin. Floating yang produces a fever; weakness of yin makes spontaneous sweating. The patient has aversion to cold that makes them huddle up, aversion to wind as if their body is splashed with cold water, gentle fever as if their body is covered with feathers, sneezing or hoarse breathing in the nose, and dry retching. Cinnamon Twig Decoction (gu zh tng) should be prescribed. MLA (Modern Language Assoc.) Liu, Guohui. Discussion of Cold Damage (Shang Han Lun) : Commentaries and Clinical Applications. 13.01.2022 Blood retention / stasis leading to infertility and pain can also occur in men, again often due to anatomical obstruction. The left testicle is the most common of the two to be effected by varicocities. This occurs due to its connection to the left renal vein being at a 90 degree angle and at times pressure from the superior mesenteric artery.

11.01.2022 There are so many forms of medicine and of course, wats to deliver medicine. A hug, a joke, or a tincture, all medicine. So whats this? Tinctures are 30% ethanol, 70% water/herb forms of medicine. For many herbal formulas, this method of extraction and delivery works very well. Over the last 12 years I have developed my top 24 versions of classical and modern tinctures. #kampo #chineseherbalmedicine #tincture#melbourne

09.01.2022 TaiYin disease relates to earth and water, when your system is diseased and in a ‘TaiYin’ state, you have a soggy wet and usually internally cold system. This will get worse between 9am-3pm and you’ll feel better from 9pm-3am. Often a TaiYin conditions occur in Summer when the qi and warmth is on the outside, this internally you become cold. This manifests as diarrhea, abdominal fullness, vomiting, inability to eat, abdominal pain and lack of thirst, with saliva building in the mouth. The common formula for these conditions is SiNiTang. Avoid cold and raw food, Avoid damp food such as dairy, sugar and eat more warm spices such as ginger, cinnamon, licquorice, yams and root vegetables. #kampo #tcm #diarrhea #digestion

08.01.2022 Abdominal pulsations / palpitations are common. You must obviously rule out the red flag situation of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), however, if not that, another clue to help guide your formula selection. @ Chris Eddy Melbourne Acupuncture Clinic

04.01.2022 The Tai Yin chapter has now joined the rest to bring into focus fluid and middle jiao herbs such as Fuling and BaiZhu. We start to see symptoms here of loose stools, weak pulse and stagnant water.

03.01.2022 Added Shao Yang formulas to the set. Its a very important conformation, and these formulas especially important in treating lingering cold and flu (among thousands of other uses). #kampo#chineseherbalmedicine #melbourne#shanghanlun

03.01.2022 Patients are always surprised that an acupuncture needle is 10 times smaller than a standard injection needle.
