23.01.2022 UPDATE: Pastor Fred, the pastor @beaudonelly and I spent time with in Uganda has a GoFundMe page to raise money for some of the children in this story. The funds will go directly to the families we spoke to in Soroti and Lira. Some need money for medicine, others need to travel to hospital, they all need food security. If you can help, no amount is too small.GoFundMe page: https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-disabled-children-in-sor

22.01.2022 20/09/20 Portraits as a part of latest work for @aljazeeraenglish :: for full report in @aljazeeraenglish by myself and @beau.donelly go to https://interactive.aljazeera.com//uganda-hidde/index.html Soroti, Uganda. When not tending to his congregation in Soroti, eastern Uganda, Pastor Fred Alimet travels to regional areas to educate communities about children with disabilities. Trying to dispel the long held cultural belief that children with disabilities are cursed, Fred... is fighting a battle against the tide :: Obur, Soroti District. Twelve year old Catherine Asinge is bound daily to a chair in a storehouse with chickens and sacks of Cassava. She looked bewildered by the light as the storehouse door was opened. Un-diagnosed and speechless, she now resides in the village of her 'uncle', her older brother Charles Okwaronro. Charles took guardianship as her father will not allow her to live in the same village as the marital family. Catherine's mother - Sarah Akkello - visits as regularly as she can. When Charles has to leave the village for work or errands, Catherine is tethered for her own safety :: Obur, Uganda. Rose Akello is the mother of Ketty Akello, a bright, joyful girl with Down Syndrome. Unaware of what Down Syndrome is, Rose's husband demanded that Ketty be thrown into a pit latrine as a mercy killing. Rose and Ketty would be chased out of their village. Finding a haven in the remote village of Obur in the Eastern District of Uganda, Rose would send Ketty to the Aamanyi Centre in Entebbe, a compound for youth living with disability to learn the life skills needed to live effectively amongst the broader community. They see each other three times a year when Ketty returns on term break :: #photojournalism #uganda #africa #disability #disabilityawareness #mentalhealth #downsyndrome #intellectualdisabilities @embracekulture #nomorehiddenchildren #health #reportage #reportagespotlight

22.01.2022 24/09/20 Portraits as a part of latest work for @aljazeeraenglish :: For the complete report on Uganda’s hidden children; their lack of systemic support, battle with cultural taboos and a societal lack of knowledge, with words by @beau.donelly see link: https://interactive.aljazeera.com//uganda-hidde/index.html :: Ojwina, Lira District. Ezra Moro and Agnes Nangobi. Seven year old Ezra Moro, was born healthy. At age four he began to show signs of disability, turned in feet a...nd loss of speech. Within three years he is completely disabled. Ezra hasnt been formally diagnosed but his mother, Agnes Nangobi believes he has Spastic diplegia, commonly known as Cerebral Palsy. Her family has had its home destroyed by an angry mob who believe Ezra and the family to be cursed :: Kabaale, Entebbe. Ruth Nakimera is a traditional birth attendant. Not medically trained, traditional birth attendants are an important part of the health system for pregnant women, particularly in isolated areas where access to a doctor is logistically and financially difficult. They will offer services for pre-natal care - ranging from regulating the menstrual cycle to changing the sex of the baby - which usually consists of a physical check up followed by a prescription of traditional medicines, herbs etc. The lack of access to modern medicines and diagnostic testing means more mothers rely upon traditional means as their only form of healthcare and many babies are born with disabilities such as Down Syndrome :: Entebbe, Uganda. Catherine Munaaba's daughter Grace Mugisha was born with Cerebral Palsy. The child's father left her and she has had to relocate to a different region of Entebbe due to ill-will directed at her and Grace. She never considered killing her child and unlike many, she hires help to look after Grace when she leaves the home for work. She found a WhatsApp group for mothers of children with disability and relied on the forum for assistance but since a governmental tax on social media was introduced, has dropped out of the group due to the increased costs associated :: #photojournalism #uganda #africa #disability #intellectualdisabilities #nomorehiddenchildren #mentalhealth #disabilityawareness @embracekulture #health

14.01.2022 15/09/20 In March this year, pre Covid-19, Beau Donelly and I travelled to Uganda to report on the crisis facing children living with intellectual and physical disability. For all its progress, Uganda’s record of supporting people with disabilities is abysmal. There are an estimated 6 million persons living with a disability. There is a severe lack of awareness of cognitive and developmental disabilities, which have not been included in developmental or government programming.... Disabled children, especially, are seen as a burden. So-called mercy killings are an accepted part of life in some rural areas. The families of disabled children are largely unsupported by their community and the government. Without access to education or information, the public are forced to rely on a deeply rooted cultural misconception that labels these disabilities a ‘curse’ or ‘possession’. And children are still hidden, locked and tethered inside, vulnerable to extreme forms of abuse and death. https://interactive.aljazeera.com//uganda-hidde/index.html Big thanks to the team at Al Jazeera English. @AAbuJ @haddadme @AliaChughtai Please take the time to read on a larger screen than a phone. Please share. Photographs Christopher Hopkins 2020 Lugonjo, Uganda. Salma Kobusinge - lives with intellectual impairments, believed to be Autism. She does not speak, has Epilepsy, Sickle cells, is deaf and blind in her right eye. Her mother, Nono Zubeda has told disability outreach worker Stephan Kabenge that she wishes Salma was dead. Nono has spent time in prison for leaving Salma unattended in the dilapidated two room house in a suburb of Entebbe. Salma's father denies the child is his and offers Nono no assistance in the home or financially for Salma's medications. Nono has resorted to the services of a local Witch Doctor, but he has made no difference to their lives.
14.01.2022 Received great news today. 'Invisible Wounds' - a project that I have been working on since mid 2018 has now been acquired in its entirety for the Australian War Memorial's permanent collection :: Exhibition news to come (post Covid-19 I assume) :: The series of photographic portraits visually represent the tension and fragility of Australian military veterans living with ongoing mental health and wellness issues :: The uncomfortable intimacy of the portraits is purposeful. The veterans who sat want their pain, frustration, confusion and loneliness publicised, so that future generations of soldiers don’t have to :: all photographs Christopher Hopkins 2020
13.01.2022 20/9/20 Obur, Soroti District, Uganda. Pastor Fred Alimet re-buttons Silus Odii’s shirt after untying his tether. Thirteen year old Silus regularly gets tethered to a wooden crate inside his family's single room home. He lives with Down Syndrome. His mother and father: Elizabeth Iloi and Joram Odii are subsistence farmers, growing and selling Cassava and are often away from the family property. In the past Silus has been assaulted and abused by neighbouring villagers because... of his disability, so Joram and Elizabeth now tether him inside for his own safety. The act of chaining or tethering a child with mental health or disability issues is often not out of malice, but to restrict any harm from ill-informed members of the community :: for full report in @aljazeeraenglish by myself and @beau.donelly go to https://interactive.aljazeera.com//uganda-hidde/index.html :: #photojournalism #disability #disabilityawareness #mentalhealth #intellectualdisabilities #uganda #africa #downsyndrome #nomorehiddenchildren @embracekulture
