20.01.2022 TAG & SHARE WITH PEOPLE WHO USE WHEAT PACKS Many people like to use therapeutic wheat bags for the relief of various types of muscular, back and arthritic p...ains, but at this time of year they are also used for some extra warmth during these chilly nights. Wheat bags are usually made of fabric filled with wheat or other grains. They can be heated in the microwave until they reach a desired temperature (according to the manufacturers instructions). Investigations into therapeutic wheat bags have revealed that the wheat can ignite during heating and when used as a warmer in bed. Constant use can result in the reduction of the moisture content of the wheat, causing it to overheat. This can result in a fire or burns. The following are some safety hints when using therapeutic wheat bags: Only purchase bags which have an information sheet, which clearly states how to use the item. Read and follow manufacturers instructions carefully. Do not overheat the wheat bag, follow the manufacturers instructions. When heating the wheat bag, some manufacturers recommend placing a glass of water in the microwave to prevent wheat from drying out. Do not use wheat bags as a bed warmer. Never use wheat bags while you are in bed in case you fall asleep while using them. Always remain in attendance when heating the bag. Watch for signs of over use, e.g. cooking or burning odours, charring of the bag. If these signs are present dispose of the bag after it has cooled down. Do not store away until the wheat bag is cold. Always leave the wheat bag to cool on a non-combustible surface. People who make the bags should include an information sheet which provides a method for the use of the bags. When making the bags, it would be preferable to use flame retardant materials. Never use rubber or plastic backed materials. Avoid using wheat which contains dust. Check the life of the heat pack according to manufacturers instructions. Photo Credit: Lorne Fire Brigade CFA

19.01.2022 Well, the time is here. The clinic will be closed until the start of March while I recover from shoulder surgery. Merry Christmas everyone. See you in 2020.

16.01.2022 This is worth showing your family

16.01.2022 Ive had a few questions this past couple of weeks regarding the changes to Private Health Funds and how those changes might impact Massage & Myotherapy. The good news is THEY WONT. Nothing changes.

16.01.2022 We are back in the clinic this week but there are a few changes to ensure everyones safety. If you are SICK AT ALL or display any COLD/FLU SYMPTOMS or have come into contact with anyone who is ill or has been diagnosed with COVID-19 you are not to enter the clinic we need to CANCEL YOUR APPOINTMENT. Cancellation fees will not apply if you are sick. Do you have a FEVER. Your temperature will be checked at the clinic with a non contact digital thermometer. Anyone presentin...g with a temperature 38c will not be permitted in the treatment room. Please SHOWER IMMEDIATELY BEFORE your appointment if possible. If you have your own mask, please feel comfortable to wear it to your appointment. I will not be offended. When you arrive, please WAIT IN YOUR CAR. We now have a 30 min gap between appointments for cleaning. When the room has been cleaned and sanitised, I will come and get you. There will be NO BATHROOM / TOILET FACILITIES available. ONLY THE PATIENT AND MYSELF WILL BE PERMITTED TO ENTER THE TREATMENT ROOM unless you are the 1 adult accompanying a child under 16years. PLEASE DO NOT BRING YOUR FAMILY. HAND SANITISER will be available and must be used on arrival and departure. If you are in an "At Risk" category as defined by the Federal Dept. of Health Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people over 50 years Non-Indigenous people over 65 years People living in residential aged care facilities please carefully consider the importance of your treatment. My advice is that if you are not in pain, please stay safe at home.

14.01.2022 There is a lot of speculation over the NSW Governments apparent recent relaxation of the Covid-19 restriction regarding Remedial Massage. While this is promising, the devil may be in the detail. We are being advised that there is a condition placed on this re-opening. The condition is along the lines of "strict guidelines will need to be followed". Unfortunately, these strict guidelines have yet to be released. As soon as these critical details are made available, I will be able to assess my ability to comply and make a decision as to when I can re-open the clinic.

13.01.2022 Please be aware of this and if you come across any information about these uniforms, please contact our local police. This only hurts the kids of the club. The uniforms are no use to anyone else as they would only serve to identify them as the person who stole them.

12.01.2022 As you may or may not be aware, I returned from 3 months leave after shoulder surgery on 1st March. I was only back in the clinic 2.5 weeks before the prime minister announced that "Massage Parlours" had to close. That unfortunate phrase has caused no end of drama to our industry and our clients. Thankfully our associations have been working tirelessly, lobbying Federal & State governments to ensure that Remedial Massage and Myotherapy are included in the ruling that allows A...llied Health Workers to continue to treat patients experiencing pain through these times of uncertainty. Although Im sure we would all like to see things to go back to the way they were as soon as possible, there are some conditions which will have to be the new normal for the foreseeable future. These conditions apply to everyone to ensure that the clinic room remains a safe treatment space. 11.01.2022 You can now view all my availability and book your appointment any time 24/7 by clicking the "Book Now" button at the top of the page. But please remember that if you feel more comfortable talking to me direct then please dont hesitate to call during business hours or send a text.

11.01.2022 Im back. Thanks everyone for your patience! Im feeling better then ever, the shoulder is strong and Im well rested and eager to get back to work.

10.01.2022 While not directly musculoskeletal in nature, with the start of the Netball season just around the corner, thought I would post this link to a great resource from Netball Australia. It discusses the importance of nutrition in teens and how activity and nutrition relate to improving your season. http://s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com//Aussie-Apples-Heal

09.01.2022 I sincerely want to thank everyone for your support this year. Merry Christmas to everyone. I am taking a well-earned rest and will be back to work from Monday 21st January.

09.01.2022 If youre experiencing TMJ issues or jaw pain and/or headache, and not sure where to turn, be sure to ask your local Myotherapist how they can help you reduce pain and regain function. 08.01.2022 FURTHER COVID-19 UPDATE Hunter New England Health can now confirm the child under 10 with confirmed COVID-19 reported earlier today, also visited the Don Waring... Oval on 19 July between 8.15am 10am. The child participated in the home team Nelson Bay Blue Marlins under 9s AFL match against the Newcastle City Sky Blues. The childs team mates are considered close contacts and are being notified and will be required to isolate for 14 days. The opposing team, and others present at the oval are asked to be on the lookout for COVID-19 symptoms and get tested immediately should any respiratory symptoms or fever occur.

07.01.2022 Big news for community AFL

07.01.2022 Unfortunately, I have been forced to make the heartbreaking decision to temporarily close the doors on the clinic due to the Covid-19 virus. During this next week I will be exploring other means of continuing to provide services possibly online via TeleHealth. Using this medium, Id envisage still being able to assess and provide advise on self massage and exercise techniques to relieve pain and discomfort. Please let me know if this is something you think may be valuable.

06.01.2022 Direct from the Myotherapy Association of Australia website - "Myotherapy is the evidence-based assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal pain and associated conditions" In common with physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors, myotherapists may use massage in their treatments, when warranted, but they also call upon a wide range of other evidence-based treatment approaches and skill-sets which in addition to manual therapy, dry needling, and thermal an...d electro-therapeutic techniques may include; exercise prescription and/or education about pain management, load management, activity modification and/or lifestyle modification. Like the aforementioned allied health professions, myotherapy has its own separate qualifications, specifically the BHSc (Clinical Myotherapy), BHSc (Myotherapy) and AdvDip (Myotherapy), which qualify practitioners to undertake an evidence-based assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of patients experiencing musculoskeletal pain and associated conditions. #Myotherapy #MyoAwarenessWeek2019 #maweek2019 #evidencebased

05.01.2022 As you can see we have changed the business name to reflect the changing nature of the industry and research into manual therapy. This change also reflects my new qualification as a Myotherapist. As most of you are aware, remedial massage is a major component of the treatment I provide, however there are many other complimentary treatments including functional assessments, mobilisations, dry needling and exercise prescription which compliment massage. For more information check out the new web page at www.maitlandmyotherapy.com.au

05.01.2022 Well, the surgery is done. Now just 6 weeks in the sling and another 6 weeks of rehab to look forward to.

02.01.2022 PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT COVID-19 CASE CONFIRMED IN PORT STEPHENS Hunter New England Local Health District is urging anyone who visited the Salamander Bay Shopping... Centre on 15 July to watch for COVID-19 symptoms and get tested should any respiratory symptoms or fever occur. The warning follows confirmation of a COVID-19 case in Port Stephens area. The new case is a man in his 60s, who is now in isolation. The source of infection was a visitor from Sydney. Anyone in the general Port Stephens area with symptoms of COVID-19 should seek testing. The Sydney case also visited the Windsor Castle Hotel in East Maitland between 6-8 pm on 13 July. Anyone who visited the hotel during this timeframe, and is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, should seek testing immediately. If you were at the Windsor Castle Hotel in East Maitland on the evening of 13 July or Salamander Bay Shopping Centre on 15 July you may be at risk of infection and you must be tested for COVID-19 even if you have the mildest of respiratory symptoms, said Dr David Durrheim, Public Health Controller for Hunter New England Healths COVID-19 response. Anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms such as fever, sore throat, cough or shortness of breath, is urged to get tested. Even those with mild symptoms such as fatigue, new muscle aches or pains, a change in taste or smell or a new runny nose are encouraged to arrange testing, he said. Additional staff have been deployed to the nearby Tomaree Community Hospital COVID-19 clinic to increase testing capability. Please call 4964 7497 between 8am to-4pm to make an appointment, or seek a referral from your GP. COVID-19 testing is also available at Maitland Hospital walk-in clinic, between 9am-4pm, 7 days a week. Testing is also available through local GP clinics, and at a number of hospitals in the Hunter region. A full list of COVID-19 testing clinics is available here: https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectio//Pages/clinics.aspx It is essential people follow directions they receive about home isolation and quarantine and maintain COVID-safe practices of physical distancing of 1.5 metres, cough or sneeze into their elbow, and regularly wash their hands.

01.01.2022 Less than 3 weeks now until my shoulder surgery. I still have a few appointments available but please dont leave it until the last minute. My last day in the clinic will be Friday 29th November and I hope to be cleared to return in time for the start of March. I want to thank everyone for your support this year and look forward to catching up in 2020. I will keep you updated on the exact date of my return via FB, email and text message.
