16.01.2022 X is for eXtinct "It's not pining. It's passed on! This parrot is no more. It has ceased to be! It has expired and gone to see its maker. This is a la...te parrot. Its a stiff! Bereft of life it rests in peace. If you hadn't nailed it to the perch it would be pushing up daisies. It's rung down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. It's an eX-parrot!" Monty Pythons famous 'Dead Parrot' sketch rings true for this stunning bird last seen almost 100 years ago. The Paradise Parrot. (Ok you'll have to forgive some creative licence for X!) The last record of this stunning species was from 1927. They nested in termite mounds and were very similar and related to the Golden-shouldered and Hooded Parrots from the genus Psephotous. I was lucky enough to see these skins in The Australian Museum years ago thank to Walter Boles, when @abrahamjoffe and I started to work on a Night Parrot documentary (which was shelved soon after when John Young got the first images of that bird). Paradise parrots were such stunning birds who once again tell a sad story about the impact that we humans have on our natural world. How I long for a world that values every part of creation and acknowledges that we are but one part of a bigger picture, and not just the unrelenting alpha. X is for eXcruciating sadness. X is for those deep cuts in our souls that through extinction will never be healed. There simply is no coming back from it. eXtinction is indeed forever. PS - There will be no X tips tonight. There is enough to ponder. And I am too sad to write more. Hopefully Y & Z will be more uplifting See more
