25.01.2022 Bundaberg, Qld You know you have a passion for Photography when after a whole day of working with a camera, you still can’t help but go chasing colour! I’m still no weatherman, but I feel like with every shoot you gain more of an understanding of what light the clouds will help produce.... I had a good feeling about the cloud cover and despite shooting all day, I knew it was now or never to get a shot I’ve been imagining since moving to Bundaberg. 24.01.2022 Bundaberg, QLD It never ceases to amaze us how incredible scenery looks from an aerial perspective, this time was absolutely no exception! Farmland always has patterns with rows of crops etc, which do look great from the ground, but with the accuracy of the GPS equipment used for farming it creates unbelievable patterns that could never fully be appreciated from the ground.... Pair this with the nutrient rich red soil of Bundaberg and you get more than you could ever ask for! 21.01.2022 Condamine, QLD We figured it was time we posted another Astro image and another Abandoned image, so here is a two for one! Late in the Astro season last year with the Galactic Centre low in the sky, we managed to grab this image of an Abandoned Shearing Shed not long before the Galactic Centre disappeared below the horizon. ... Ideally we would have liked to spend longer on it, possibly even get a series of images that we could stack for noise reduction. But time was limited, so we tried a few different light painting options and ended up with this being our favourite. 20.01.2022 Elliott Heads, QLD While exploring Bundaberg we located this incredible memorial park called Submarine Lookout. As the name suggests the lookout played a very important role during World War II, with volunteers from the 10th Battalion being responsible for reporting any enemy movement in the vicinity, particularly that of enemy submarines. ... This lookout not only has incredible history, but also incredible scenery. The sea has shaped and carved amazing rock formations that interact so perfectly with the water. 12.01.2022 Maryborough, QLD Recently I had the opportunity to do a photo shoot for a good friend and bike builder Nigel Fox who runs SlyFox Bikes. With more bikes on the way, we decided to experiment with a new location and new lighting equipment for future images.... The location showcased in the image is in fact the Slyfox workshop, exactly where the bikes are hand built. Nigel and I will be working together on future projects, so keep an eye out for more bikes and of course more images and lighting techniques. 12.01.2022 Every so often, the sun burps, with the power of 20 million nuclear bombs. These hiccups are known as coronal mass ejections or CMEs. They are powerful eruption...s near the surface of the sun, driven by kinks in the solar magnetic field. The resulting shocks ripple through the solar system and can interrupt satellites and power grids on Earth. During a CME, enormous bubbles of superheated gas called plasma are ejected from the sun. Over the course of several hours, a billion tons of material are lifted off the sun’s surface and accelerated to speeds of a million miles per hour (1.6 million kilometers per hour). The plasma itself is a cloud of protons and electrons carried aloft by the solar wind. Traveling at a million miles per hour, the ejecta can cross the 93-million-mile distance to Earth in just a few days. A jet moving that fast would get you from Los Angeles to New York in 18 seconds. When a plasma cloud hits our planet, the onslaught of charged particles has observable effects. Auroral lights, usually only seen near the poles, can drift to lower latitudes and become more brilliant. The disturbance of the magnetic field can also expose Earth to deadly cosmic rays. The atmosphere still provides enough protection for everyone on the ground. But astronauts in space may receive lethal doses of radiation. During a solar storm in 1989, cosmonauts aboard the Mir space station received their maximum yearly radiation dose in just a few hours! But the 1989 storm is nothing compared to the geomagnetic storm of 1859. Known as the Carrington Event, it was the most powerful geomagnetic storm ever recorded. Auroras were observed as far south as Hawai’i and the Caribbean. Witnesses at higher latitudes reported being able to read newspapers by the light of the aurora alone. Telegraph networks around globe catastrophically failed; operators received shocks and telegraph paper caught on fire. A repeat of the Carrington Event in today’s far more interconnected world would be devastating. Cascading failures could quickly shut power down to millions of people in a matter of minutes. Communication networks and GPS would all shut down. Credit : EarthSky.org
10.01.2022 Durong, QLD Best part about a road trip during storm season, it can quickly become a storm chase! While driving from Bundaberg to Miles, we stopped in at Nanango for a car photo shoot for Just Auto Magazine.... We managed to sneak the shoot in before a huge storm hit Nanango, the approaching storm was featured in the background of some really cool rolling car shots. (Which will be coming in the future on our pages, website and Just Autos Magazine) After leaving Nanango in the nick of time, we noticed there were multiple cells popping up all around us while we were taking the back roads to Miles. Of course, our Photographer/Storm chaser instincts took over and we ended up taking some detours, which added a whole bunch of time on the trip and ended up at Durong. By this point we had got ahead of a big storm cell and set up this composition on the side of the road and began rattling off exposures in hopes of some bolts. Well out of hundreds of images, this was the one big bolt that happened in front of us! We were stoked to get it and soon after captured an image that we cannot wait to share with you! Moments before diving in the car and being covered in a huge wave of dust, rain and hail. 08.01.2022 Our Sun is alive! Captured by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, this GIGANTIC coronal mass ejection (or CME) ripped itself apart from the surface of our star... in 2012, sending a wave of hot plasma into deep space. 07.01.2022 Miles, QLD This image had been something we had imagined for years, being able to combine the large trees in the middle of the Gil Weir with the Galactic Centre low in the sky. 05.01.2022 Condamine, QLD We hope you all had a great Easter Holiday! It is about time we shared some more of our Astro images, so here is an image from late in the Astro season last year. ... For a while we have been wanting to find one of these dead trees with nothing around it for a low Galactic Center image, but it isn’t as easy as it sounds. This one just happened to be on it’s own and in the perfect spot for a low horizontal Galactic Center shot, which was easy to plan with the help of the PhotoPills App. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed shooting it! 04.01.2022 Condamine, QLD Previously we posted an image of a tracked and stacked image of the Galactic Centre, which we shot while waiting for it to be in the alignment we wanted for this image. Having planned to go to a family friends property on a new moon night late in astro season, we knew it would be a long night of shooting.... As soon as we arrived, this row of Silo’s caught our eye and we knew they would be ideal for a vertical pano. 04.01.2022 Miles, QLD Some of you might recognize this warplane, the Kittyhawk from an aviation shoot I had the opportunity to capture from a Lockheed Electra earlier in the year. We managed to get private access to the Miles Airport for a dawn shoot and had such a great time running around capturing all the aircraft in a mixture of flash and natural light. ... 02.01.2022 Bundaberg, QLD We bought our first home! As you might have noticed we have been very absent from social media as of late, we were caught up in the rental trap all during our business expanding rapidly since moving to Bundaberg.... We underestimated how difficult it is to actually get a home loan and purchase a home, though we are so grateful that we finally made it, even if we are on a super high interest home loan for now. We figured, this would be a great time to start sharing some of our Commercial Photographic work we have been flat out with since relocating to Bundaberg, Now don’t worry! Of course we will still be posting a good mix of our Fine Art as well as our Commercial work, but we can’t help but share some of our images from the fantastic companies, corporations and businesses we have been doing work with. 02.01.2022 Condamine, QLD Something we haven’t done a lot of is Deep Sky Astrophotography, this one particular clear new moon night we had the opportunity to do just that. After shooting the sunset and emerging night sky we had a moment to wait before the Galactic Centre was going to be aligned above a subject we planned to capture. (Which will be coming soon)... We set up the D850 with the Nikkor 14-24mm on the Polarie Star Tracker and aligned it as accurately as possible to the South Pole and began capturing longer exposures than possible without a star tracker. This image is the result of the Galactic Centre being tracked with the Polarie Star Tracker and multiple exposures stacked with the help of star stacking software.
