19.01.2022 Heya, Chris here today :) I wanted to chat (frankly!) about getting healthy. Like real, deep health. Not just superficial 'get rid of my symptoms' health. If you're like most of our clients when they first start working with us, you're likely stressed-out, and your body is definitely feeling it. Fatigued, PMS-y, gut bloat, skin breakouts, and the rest. 16.01.2022 As a Functional Medicine Practitioner and a Mumma, I get asked this a lot: how can I get my child to live healthier? This little nugget says it all: Children DO what they SEE you do...and not so much what you TELL them to do. Are you living a life that you would love your kids to follow? Are you nourishing your body with healthy foods? Are you staying true to your highest values? Are you sleeping well? Moving well? Having screen-free time? Getting out in nature? Being mindful...? Establishing a healthy work-life balance? Spending playful time with your kids? Being present? Our Miss 8yo HATES drinking water from the "yucky" tap. We live in the town, so have access to town-water. She will only drink from our water filter. Why? Well it does taste better, but she has patterned this healthy drinking habit from her Dad, Chris, who also flat-out refuses to drink from the tap. Our Miss 8yo also has a bit of temper. I've caught her 'telling off' her younger sister many times, and I have to cringe because she sounds JUST LIKE ME!!!! when I tell her off. Why? She has patterned this Angry Mummy habit from me. It's something I'm working on! Lol. Not just for my own 'stress-levels' sake, but because I want my children to pattern healthy ways of being from me, on ALL levels. 12.01.2022 Are you struggling with low energy? A common underlying physiological imbalance of fatigue links back to your stress hormones: cortisol & DHEA. When you're under stress, the brain tells the adrenal glands to secrete cortisol, which causes your body to respond to stress. When there is enough cortisol flooded in the blood, DHEA then jumps in to switch the brain off from 'stressing', which then brings cortisol levels (and you!) back down to a relaxed state. Overtime, when ther...e is TOO MUCH cortisol being secreted (this will happen if you've been under a lot of chronic emotional or physical stress), DHEA levels will start depleting, as it can no longer keep up with its crazy, hyperactive counterpart. What happens then, when DHEA is no longer being secreted efficiently? THERE IS NO HORMONE TO SWITCH YOUR BRAIN OFF FROM STRESSING! It is absolutely CRAZY how common this hormonal dysfunction is happening - I'd say 80-90% of our clients tested for adrenal fatigue, come back as positive. The adrenal glands are responsible for not just dealing with stress, however, but also for resiliency, energy and endurance. 10.01.2022 If your body is feeling worn-out, chances are your microbiome has depleted too... Here's a MYTH BUSTER for you today! You CANNOT repopulate the gut with good bacteria by taking PROBIOTICS or eating fermented foods.... Decades of research have shown that the moment you stop taking your probiotics or eating fermented foods, all those good bugs leave your gut within 1 day to 2-weeks at best. Any "colonisation" is only temporary. If you want to boost your NATIVE MICROBIOTA it is much better to take PREBIOTIC supplements and eat PREBIOTIC foods. I use very specific supplements and foods to improve the diversity of the bacteria in your gut, based on the levels shown in functional medicine stool testing. Am I against probiotics or fermented foods? Not at all! Fermented foods can have beneficial effects, as long as you're eating/drinking them daily. 08.01.2022 I was pretty chuffed when I created this Zucchini Bread recipe that is low-histamine friendly! This zucchini bread is only slightly sweetened with some raw honey, so you can enjoy this as a sweet treat or a savoury snack or part of a meal. I’ve used aquafaba in this recipe in place of eggs (gaaaaah, best egg-replacement ever!!!). To make aquafaba, all you need to do is drain the brine from a can of chickpeas, and whip it up until it looks like egg-whites. 08.01.2022 Take me back to our weekend away in the mountains and sweating it out in this sauna :) There are three ways we clear toxins: poop, pee & sweat. If any of these elimination pathways aren't working effectively, you are at high risk of toxin build-up, which can lead to all sorts of illnesses. Sweating is a critical human detox function, yet most people don't sweat regularly or enough. Using saunas is an excellent way of getting your sweat up. If you can't regularly access a sau...na, doing some sweaty exercise will also help! If you struggle with fatigue or are low in vitality and not yet able to exercise at an intensity to work up a sweat, try rugging up really warm and go for a walk. Often this is enough to get a good enough sweat up. Having a nice hot bath will also achieve the same thing - add in some epsom salts to increase your detoxifying ability :)

07.01.2022 Sorry for the sick-o photo, but I've got all sorts of mould on my mind lately We recently found out that our bathroom floor had grown a fungus-party (ahem...our floor started feeling 'squishy'...so gross! We've got major bathroom renos getting started real soon, thank goodness!). Mould can be a major health hazard. At least 50% of homes have a water issue. And at least 20% of the population are susceptible to mycotoxin (mould) illness. 01.01.2022 Feeling like an angry mum waaaaaay too often? The reality is: there might be imbalances happening in your body and mind that are forcing your inner dragon mum to rear its angry head more often than it should. For example:... - An infection of the gut could cause your rage. Think of h.pylori, giardia or candida, which are damaging your gut-brain connection with inflammation. Several studies have observed that gut inflammation affects mental health conditions such as mood imbalances, anxiety, and depression. - A depletion of neurotransmitters could be another cause. It relates to an imbalance in your brain chemicals, dopamine or serotonin, triggering your impatience and snappiness, and even irrational anger, as seen in this study. When I tested my neurotransmitters, it wasn't a surprise to see how low my dopamine was. - Your dragon mum can also awaken because of toxin overload. When your body struggles to detox and cleanse, it affects your brain's healthy functions, triggering more anxiety and depression.
