25.01.2022 Retail worker just trying to do their job. Retail workers shouldn’t cop abuse for asking you to comply with a health directive. No retail worker deserves a serve... #noonedeservesaserve
25.01.2022 As union officials, every staff member at the SDA works tirelessly to help improve our members pay and conditions at work. So it means a lot to everyone when we receive a letter like this from a happy SDA member. #thankyou
25.01.2022 Congrats to Bryce for winning our competition for tickets to the State of Origin final. Glad you had a good time with your brother. #QUEENSLANDER!
24.01.2022 One rule for them, another for the rest of us. Demand the Government stop their attacks on your superannuation: One rule for them, another for the rest of us.
23.01.2022 The Government only cares about big business and their bottom line but not whether you can make ends meet.
23.01.2022 A lot has changed in the past 42 years - but one thing hasn't, the SDA has always been working hard to improve the pay and conditions of retail, fast food and warehouse workers. #throwbackthursday #coles
22.01.2022 We spend a lot of time at work with our colleagues and quite often you will notice signs that someone may need some extra support - from changes in their mood or changes in their behaviour. Don't be afraid to check in and ask, R U OK Day? You can find some useful tips at https://www.ruok.org.au/work to help. #RUOK
19.01.2022 Scott Morrison wants to freeze super AGAIN with the promise that wages will rise. Do you trust him?
19.01.2022 A big #congratulations to SDA Shop Steward Joan from Myer on her retirement! Joan has been an #SDA member for over 25 years and a Shop Steward for 24 years. Thanks for all your hard work and support Joan, and good luck for the future. We wish you a long and happy retirement.
19.01.2022 While big business is making record profits, the Government wants to give them even more power to slash workers' rights. Demand the Government to stop their attacks on workers' pay and rights:
17.01.2022 Customer Abuse and Violence in the Courier mail, with some stories from SDA members to remind everyone that No One Deserves a Serve #NoOneDeservesAServe
17.01.2022 Last week, I met with Anika Wells MP and Bart Mellish MP- Member for Aspley to discuss the unfair burden of retail and fast food staff paying to park while they work - and they make up the majority of people who pay for parking. This is a cost they can't afford and don't deserve.
17.01.2022 Is your local store out of Ooshies? That's no excuse for abuse. Share if you agree.
16.01.2022 The SDA sees scan rates as guides. There are always going to be people below and above average as we are all different and many factors affect scan rates such as the size and weight of items, walking distances, and so on. The SDA encourages workers to try work to the best of their ability and to always do tasks in a safe manner. Dont take shortcuts. Follow all reasonable instructions as long as they are safe. If there are still issues ask the manager what are you suggesting I do to achieve the scan rates. You can always contact the SDA on 07 38338500 for advice.
16.01.2022 Last year the SDA called on all retailers to conduct an audit of their payroll systems to ensure no worker is being underpaid. The SDA wants to ensure you receive the correct pay and conditions you are legally entitled to. If you are impacted by this underpayment, you will receive direct communication from the Company in late September or early October.... The SDA is here to provide help and support and we will continue to keep you updated with further information.
16.01.2022 It's one rule for them, another for the rest of us. #unfair
15.01.2022 Regardless of how bad your day gets - being an SDA member is the best decision you will make while working in retail fast food and warehousing
15.01.2022 If your boss is telling you, you don't need to join a union, you should DEFINITELY join a union. Watch this you tube video to see why!! #MakeAmazonPay #OrganizeAmazon #blackfriday2020
15.01.2022 Know Your Rights At Maccas If you are sick, it is not your responsibility to cover your shift. There is no minimum amount of time that you have to notify the store if you are sick. This obviously makes no sense illness doesn’t operate on an arbitrary time set by a company.... If you’re sick, you need to stay home and get better. This has never been more obvious than during a global pandemic. McDonald’s managers cannot set their own arbitrary requirements with no legal basis. Also, if you are a casual worker and you are unable to do a rostered shift, you just need to reject the shift. There is no requirement for you to cover that shift. This is the whole idea of casual work: the company is free to provide you with as many or as few shifts as they see fit, and you are free to work as many or as few shifts as you see fit. If the company doesn’t like this arrangement they should offer you permanent work. We are continuing to fight for better pay and conditions at McDonald’s. Get protected by joining the union: www.sdaq.asn.au/join

15.01.2022 We applaud the Annastacia Palaszczuk MP government today in making wage theft a crime in QLD. Any employer who knowingly underpays workers should face the full extent of the law. https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au//bosses-who-rip-off-worke
15.01.2022 SDA members are reporting to us that they are being asked to complete compulsory training, at home, without being paid. You MUST be paid for all time spent completing compulsory training. It is non-negotiable. If you are being asked to complete compulsory training without being paid, contact us.

13.01.2022 If John Howard in 2006 thought 15.4% super was good enough for politicians, why is 9.5% good enough for working Australians? The proposed super increase for working Australians should not be stopped by politicians #fairness
13.01.2022 If you don't join your union - you're letting the team down. Unions rely on the power of a large group of people to help fight for better pay and conditions for workers. Add your voice today at www.sdaq.asn.au/join

10.01.2022 Your employer has a duty of care to ensure you have access to SAFE car parking at work. If you don't feel safe walking to your car after work you can: Arrange to walk in a group with colleagues; Ask for a security escort to your car; or... Request to move your car closer to the exit before sundown. 09.01.2022 BREAKING: After months of campaigning by the SDA and SDA members, Coles will pass on a 1.75% pay rise to wages team members from October 5. Its great to see that Coles has done the right thing to pass on this wage increase to their essential workers. Whilst there was no legal obligation to do this, its an important recognition of the incredible work of Coles workers. Thank you to the thousands of SDA members and Shop Stewards who supported our industry-wide campaign. The SDA will update members with more information as it comes to hand.
09.01.2022 Pay workers what they're worth.

08.01.2022 The weekend as we know it began in 1948, thanks to unions winning a 40 hour working week for Australians. Since then, we have continually fought attacks on our weekends - from extended trading hours to reductions in penalty rates for working weekends. #weekends Weekends are still a special time of the week to be enjoyed with family and friends. Love having a weekend off? Thank a union for WINNING it and then DEFENDING it.
07.01.2022 How great is this picture of long-term SDA member Tracey with her work colleagues at Coles Toowong back in 1987/1988? So much has changed - the uniforms! The hair! Did you know that from 1962 until 1991, Coles stores were called 'Coles New World' and had a 'space-age' theme? It wasn't until 1998 that they were rebranded to the Coles we know today. Who has some fond memories of working in retail back then?... #throwbackthursday
06.01.2022 We applaud Kmart Australia for sending out this email to it's shoppers, asking them to wear masks in high risk stores. Face masks are mandatory for team members in high risk stores and asking customers to wear masks too assists to keep everyone safe and healthy.

05.01.2022 Even if you don't have any issues at work - unfortunately it only takes a change of management or problems with a colleague for a happy workplace to change into a problematic one. And for round about the price of one or two of cups of coffee a week wouldnt you like to have the peace of mind that if things go wrong, or even if you just want a bit of advice you have someone on your side you can call on? #unionpower

02.01.2022 This year, supermarket workers rose to an unprecedented challenge - helping their community through a pandemic. Keeping the shelves stocked. Remaining calm under stress. Keeping everyone safe and healthy. And you know what? YOU SMASHED IT! WELL DONE. Now supermarket workers are also rising to the challenge of uniting to receive the PAY RISE THEY DESERVE. Woolworths has agreed to a pay rise, but many other companies have not.... Together, we can do it. Join the campaign at https://national.sda.com.au/essential-payrise/
02.01.2022 #BREAKING: We've had a big win in the Fair Work Commission as part of our junior rates campaign. From February 1 2021, there will be no junior rates of pay in the Retail Award from Level 4 up. This is a fantastic outcome for thousands of young retail workers who will now earn the full adult rate of pay.
02.01.2022 Christmas has officially come early in Aussie supermarkets! Do you think it's too early or can't you wait to get your hands on some christmas treats? #Christmas
01.01.2022 Technology may change and jobs may evolve, but one thing stays the same - if you have a job and you have a boss, you need to join your union. * Photo Coles newest DC under construction in Queensland.
01.01.2022 We've had a lot of questions about the #Christmas public holidays this year, so here is a bit of an explainer (it's long so bear with us). #ChristmasEve Thursday 24th - is a public holiday from 6pm. This was won by SDA members campaigning the Palaszczuk Labor government in 2019 and now means public holiday rates apply for work after 6pm and is voluntary for most SDA members. All non-exempt stores (large supermarkets, hardware stores and department stores) must close at 6pm. #...ChristmasDay Friday 25th - This is a restricted trading day, which means only certain shops and businesses are allowed to open. Non-Exempt stores are not allowed to open. Exempt stores including but not limited to chemists, petrol sites, small independent supermarkets and fast food places are allowed to open. This is a public holiday and public holiday rates apply for work done on the day and is voluntary for most SDA members. #BoxingDay Saturday 26th & Monday 28th - In the past, Boxing Day used to be substituted to the Monday whenever it fell on a Saturday or a Sunday. This was unfair to weekend workers. The SDA campaigned long and hard to fix this problem, from 2011 the Bligh Labor Government legislated to make sure that whenever Boxing Day fell on a Saturday or a Sunday, both the actual Boxing Day as well as the following Monday were Public Holidays. This year both Saturday 26th December and Monday 28th December are automatically public holidays with public holiday rates applying to both days and voluntary work for most SDA members. Sunday 27th - Regular Sunday rates apply to all work on this day.

01.01.2022 In good news for Bunnings team members, they will now receive interim improvements to the current Agreement. These include improvements to penalty rates, and a performance based pay review that will take effect from 7 September 2020. Bunnings workers should notice the pay increase in their next pay. The SDA will continue to press Bunnings to negotiate a new Agreement that secures your pay and conditions over the next few years.... #bunnings
