25.01.2022 Where do you walk your dogs off-leash? It’s been reported that dog ownership has surged as a result COVID-19 restrictions, however as the map below illustrates, there is a distinct lack of off-leash dog areas in Como Ward, with the only fenced dog park being Reg Marlow Reserve on the corner of Warrigal Rd and Johnston St Mentone. Of course there is also Mentone Dog Beach, however this can be around a 2km walk for some residents within Como Ward and as a result it’s not uncomm...on to see dogs off-leash at the local parks we do have. In my opinion it should be Council’s goal to ensure that everyone has access to an off-leash area within walking distance of their home, however I’d love to hear your views and ideas how we can achieve this. Perhaps we can incorporate new off-leash areas within our existing parks where appropriate and/or Council can investigate opportunities to repurpose land that currently sits vacant, to deliver more dog parks and open space?
24.01.2022 Did you know? At the October Council elections you will no longer be voting to elect 3 Councilors in North, Central and South Wards, i.e. 9 Councilors in total Instead, Kingston has been broken into 11 new single Councilor wards... To familiarise yourself with the boundaries for Como Ward where I’ll be running, you can refer to the map below If you are still unsure which Ward you’re now in, please leave a comment, message or email me and I’ll be happy to advise you
24.01.2022 One question I am being asked a lot is if voting in the Council elections is compulsory? The answer is definitely yes and there is an $83 fine if you do not return your completed ballot paper in the post before 6pm on Friday 23rd October. If you haven’t already done so, please check out my website www.chrishillforkingston.com and if you like my ideas for Kingston remember to VOTE 1 Chris Hill for Como Ward. 23.01.2022 I’ve officially nominated and hopefully number 3 on the ballot will be my lucky number! Thinking back 6 years ago to the rally at the Mentone Hotel on that famous last Wednesday before the pub closed and the meeting at Mentone Bowls Club when I was somehow talked into Chairing the newly formed Save the Edgy Committee, I never in my wildest dreams thought it would lead to me running for Council all these years later! Saying that, I’ve really been enjoying campaigning and last ...week I was relieved to finally hit the streets with my great team of volunteers to distribute my first flyer, which you hopefully will have seen already in your letterbox. Big thanks to everyone who’s taken the time to give me a call or email me, it’s great to have the opportunity to answer all your questions and hear your ideas for making Kingston an even better place to live! Please note that whilst election day is Saturday 24th October, ballot packs should be received in the post from the 6th October and that means there’s effectively only a couple more weeks to familiarise yourself with the candidates and decide who you would like to represent you in Como Ward. Keep an eye out for my next flyer and if you haven’t already done so, please check out my website www.chrishillforkingston.com and make sure you message, email or call me if you have any questions you would like answered or ideas for Kingston you’re happy to share with me.

21.01.2022 Last year Council released their Draft Housing Strategy & Neighbourhood Character Study with plans to rezone countless streets throughout Kingston to allow 3 (or 4) storeys, including many of our nicest streets in Como Ward The Kingston Save Our Streets’ campaign helped deliver 1,600 submissions with 99.6% of residents opposing the plans. Earlier this month 8 out of 9 Councillors voted in support of the Community to make sweeping changes, significantly increasing the new ...NRZ zone with a 2 storey height limit, whilst also retaining other important planning controls To get a better understanding of where we are now in this process, you can view the Council flowchart below and note we’ve just completed the stage in green marked YES with changes It’s significant that Councillors voted to increase the application of the NRZ zone, however as you can see there is still a lot to play out and this process will not be completed until well into the next Council term It’s therefore important that all 11 new Councillors have a solid understanding of the Housing Strategy and are committed to representing our residents’ best interests first and foremost. If you do not want 3 (or 4) storey apartment blocks in your street, before you vote ask candidates for their position and make sure they’ll stand up for you and your neighbours
21.01.2022 See what people have to say about me, check out the new page on my website: https://www.chrishillforkingston.com/testimonials Ballot packs will be landing in your letterbox this week and I'd like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their kind words and encouragement over the past couple of months. I'm passionate about advocating for positive change in our community and have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to get out on the streets and speak with everyone.... I'll be hitting the streets again over the coming days delivering my next flyers, so if you see me please stop for a socially distant chat. I'd love to meet you and answer any questions you may have and hear your ideas to help make Kingston an even better place to live.
20.01.2022 My new website is live! Thanks for following my campaign and if you’d like to know more about me and the local issues I’m most passionate about I’ve just launched my new website, so please check it out!
19.01.2022 The next Council term will be pivotal in shaping Kingston's future, so make sure you're enrolled to vote at the October elections by 4pm this Friday. 17.01.2022 WAS YOUR STREET PROPOSED TO BE REZONED TO ALLOW 3 (OR MORE) STOREYS? Since I began my campaign a few months ago, I’ve been shocked how few people I’ve spoken with in Mentone, Parkdale and Cheltenham have realised the proposed changes to our residential zones relate to their street. If you’re reading this and you too don’t think you’ll ever need to fight a 3 storey development on a neighbouring property, unfortunately you might have to think again!... If your street fell into the pale blue Ïncremental Change area, or the green Transitional Change area marked on the map below (with the exception of the Coastal Design and Development Overlay (DDO) area), then it indeed was proposed it would be zoned to allow 11m 3 storey developments in last year’s Draft Housing Strategy. You might be aware that Councillors voted to extend the application of the 2 storey Neighbourhood Residential Zone at the August meeting, however it is by no means guaranteed the Minister will approve this and if he denies Council’s request, it will be up to our 11 new Councillors to continue to fight to protect the interests of our residents. Haven’t voted yet? VOTING CLOSES THIS FRIDAY. Avoid the $83 fine, make sure you return your completed ballot paper by 6pm Friday 23 October! If you haven’t done so already, please check out my website www.chrishillforkingston.com and if you have any questions or would like to chat, please message, email or give me a call. 17.01.2022 What do you love most about our beaches in Como Ward and what opportunities do you see to make them even better? Spring has sprung and with the onset of some warmer weather, I, like a lot of locals am suddenly making more trips down to the beaches in Mentone and Parkdale. I know a lot of people, including myself consider our beaches to be our greatest natural asset in Como Ward, however unfortunately there is little debate that there are days, particularly up towards the Nort...hern end of Mentone beach, when it could be much cleaner. Seaweed and other waste collects on the shore and in spite of regular cleaning cycles, the tides can play havoc making it difficult for the mechanical beach cleaners to collect any or all of the weed and rubbish on certain days and as a result people tend to avoid these areas of the beach. I’m sure there’s no easy fix, however I believe simply accepting that sections of beach can be rendered almost unusable, sometimes for days on end isn't acceptable either. I’d like to see an investigation into why the seaweed collects and identify what possible solutions there may be to overcome the issue, or at least reduce the problem. See more
16.01.2022 Hi everyone, I just wanted to update you on the first round of votes for Como Ward which were counted yesterday. COMO WARD GROUP A RETURNS NOLAN, Robyn: 1,850 (23.7%)... CAREY James M: 792 (10.1%) HILL, Chris: 2,362 (30.2%) SERPELL, Jonathan: 1,189 (15.2%) VAN DEN DUNGEN, Alison: 1,623 (20.8%) Total Formal Votes: 7,816 I understand completed ballot papers are still being received and the count will be finalised next week. It’s great to find myself in a strong position, however the result is still too close to call and I’ll post an update as soon as I have the final numbers. I’d like to thank all the residents of Mentone, Parkdale and Cheltenham who have voted for me, I really appreciate all the support you’ve given me over the past few months. I’d also like to send a big thanks to everyone who has assisted with my campaign, having one of my signs up on their fence and helping distribute my flyers to nearly 7,000 letterboxes throughout Como Ward. This was a really unusual campaign to say the least under Melbourne’s lockdown and I couldn’t have gotten my message out without the help of so many great local people! Finally, I want to thank all of my family and friends who have been so encouraging and given me great emotional support too through this crazy campaign period!
14.01.2022 I love this initiative by Bayside Council to keep kids shredding in lockdown! It’s a really tough time for young people right now with home schooling, no organised sport and only limited online interaction with friends and extended families, so it’s great to see good local people like Renton thinking outside of the box, to help inject some more fun into kids lives
14.01.2022 The next Council term will be pivotal in shaping Kingston’s future and major Planning decisions will affect us all. What are your concerns; what do you most want to protect in your neighbourhood and what opportunities do you see to make Kingston an even better place to live? Here are some of the things that are closest to my heart: Protect Kingston’s existing 1 and 2 storey character in our family friendly streets... STOP overdevelopment and retain current planning protections within the new Neighbourhood Residential Zone Review Kingston’s list of heritage properties and identify new properties in need of further protections Revisit the plans for Kingston’s Major Activity Centres in Cheltenham, Mentone, Moorabbin, Mordialloc and Chelsea and invite comment from the Community Incorporate affordable and social housing, and cutting edge sustainable housing technologies in all future urban renewal projects
14.01.2022 What is Sustainable Design? On Council’s website they list 10 sustainable building criteria which will assist in achieving more sustainable building outcomes for the long-term benefit of the wider community. I was fortunate enough to have lived in a residential development in the UK which incorporated all of these same criteria and I see a real opportunity to build similar energy efficient housing right here in the City of Kingston.... There are multiple Urban Renewal projects which are still in the early planning phase and given the pressure on all Councils to absorb their share of Melbourne’s future population growth and Kingston’s recent Climate Emergency declaration, I believe the timing is right to commit to including more sustainable housing within these projects, whilst at the same time helping meet Council’s obligation to house more new residents. As well as being incredibly energy efficient, the BedZED development where I lived incorporated social affordable housing and a shared ownership model for key workers. A recent article in The Age states that more than 45,000 Victorian households are on the social housing waiting list in part due to the pandemic. The City of Kingston has made a commitment to address the need for social and affordable housing and I believe these Urban Renewal projects could also present Council with an opportunity to deliver on this commitment. For more information on my other priorities, please check out my website www.chrishillforkingston.com and if you like my ideas for Kingston, please consider Voting 1 Chris Hill for Como Ward. If you still have any questions for me or would like to chat about any ideas you may have, please message, email or give me a call. Authorised by Chris Hill, 22B Flinders Street, Mentone VIC 3194

12.01.2022 Great story about the Edgy in today’s Mordialloc Chelsea Leader! It’s really gratifying to be able report such a positive outcome for our community in these times! It just goes to show what a determined group of local Mums and Dads can achieve, when they’re well organised and never lose sight of the goal they’re shooting for! We again should thank the owner Paul Huggins for staying the journey with us and his commitment to respecting the Heritage of the Mentone Hotel and deli...vering a significant hospitality space to the community. I can’t wait to see everyone there when the doors reopen mid next year!
12.01.2022 Who are K-SOS and given Councillors recently voted in support of the community, why do we need to remain on alert to the threat from overdevelopment in our streets? Kingston Save Our Streets or K-SOS are a community action group I founded and have lead together with my Co-Convener Pat Tilley, in response to the Draft Housing Strategy which was produced by the Consultants Ethos Urban for Council in March 2019 I began delivering flyers in my local area when I realised the s...Continue reading

04.01.2022 Dolomore Reserve Athletics Track Requires Urgent Repairs! Each year September marks the start of the Summer Little Athletics season, however sadly as is the case with all organised sports at the moment, the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions are playing havoc with LA Vic’s plans. My daughter was a member of Mentone Little Athletics Club for 6 years and I know firsthand what a fantastic job everyone does to make it great fun for families who attend every week and the great coaching... the club offers to maximise the children’s full potential. Alex Woods was my daughter’s Team Manager for the whole time she was at the club and I was shocked to hear from Alex recently that only half of the lanes on the track can currently be used due to a lack of maintenance! In fact the club’s biggest fundraiser, Mentone Relay Day had to be moved last year to another venue as a direct result of the state of the track. Mentone LAC are desperate for their track to be resurfaced as soon as possible and on a separate note I understand their planned new pavilion is also still needing to be built. Money has been earmarked for resurfacing the track in this year’s draft budget which is promising, however this is something the club would have expected to be done during the off season, given they are still hoping the Summer program can start at the end of next month when restrictions ease. I know there are other sporting clubs also waiting for Council assistance, so please reach out to me if your club is one of these.

01.01.2022 It’s Official!! I can confirm that having lead the primary vote, the distribution of preferences was carried out today and I received a call from Kingston’s CEO Julie Reid this afternoon, congratulating me for provisionally being named the successful candidate for Como Ward! I’d once again like to thank everyone who supported and voted for me and congratulate my fellow candidates for their campaigns.... I’ll officially be sworn in as Councillor on the 18th November and I can’t wait to take on this exciting new challenge, representing the good people of Como Ward!
