24.01.2022 Do you agree this happens a lot in healthcare? Credit post: @vanessamoralesdc

23.01.2022 So those who have followed me for a while we would already know that blood flow restriction training can improve muscle strength endurance, and hypertrophy to a greater extent when compared to training at the same weight without it. Thus, it makes a great supplement to training when in pain. But did you know that BFR itself can actually decrease pain? (Korakakis 2017, 2018) Ive been using BFR recently to actually INCREASE the tolerable training load in addition to augmenting the effect of the resistance training. #BFR #BloodFlowRestriction #OcclusionCuffs #Occlusion #Training #Forge #ACL #PFP #OsteoArthitis #OA #KneePain

23.01.2022 Starting preseason soon? Heres what you need to know. Great work here by Jackson Broadbent explaining the importance of both keeping active during the offseason, and progressively returning to previous training loads.

21.01.2022 Regardless of whether an ACL injuries occur directly or indirectly, they often occur with the above mechanism. We can't prevent all injuries, but we can certainly break down the predisposing factors and work on them individually, then integrate them. Giving you the best chance of mitigating ACL rupture. If you have any questions, DM me.

21.01.2022 Nordic hamstring curls are great at hitting the hamstrings eccentrically and play a major role in many injury reduction programs for sports. However, they are challenging as f"*K! If youre struggling to progress volume, range or work concentrically, try this variation using a Swiss ball. Note: if you put too much weight through the arms, this becomes an Ab exercise!

21.01.2022 The Copenhagen lift strengthens the adductors (groin muscles) and is useful in reducing the rate of adductor and pubic related groin pain in athletes.

20.01.2022 What to do if your ever feel pain or pressure in the back dont a glute bridge.

20.01.2022 Who has hamstrings like this? Did you know injury reduction programs that include Nordic hamstring curls (below) can reduce the rate of hamstring strains by 50% in athletes (multiple sports) (Van Dyk 2019 - Systematic review)

20.01.2022 New tool (toy*). The Activ5 has arrived at Forge and I cant wait to use it.

20.01.2022 Thanks to @sarahdinsey_pilates for this little challenge! @luisagrieco.physio youre up

19.01.2022 MOVING ONLINE Really privileged to be in a position to be able to continue to help patients in the current circumstances. Ive moved a lot of my caseload online, only utilising the clinic when essential. Instead Im offering 1:1 physiotherapy online, as well as some general group exercise classes from home. ... Im these times its so important to continue to exercise and be healthy, also important to take care of your mental wellbeing by being able to discuss and work on your conditions. Its equally important to remain vigilant with hygiene and social distancing to help prevent the spread of the virus. Telehealth is going to be a huge part of all health care in the coming years and Im excited to be a part of the development of this process here. @ West End

14.01.2022 Reasons why re-injury rates are so high after an ACL reconstruction. 1) Quantity and quality of rehab insufficient - Its a very long road and compliance especially in late stage is poor - Insurance companies often only fund 12 months of rehab from the injury, not from the reconstruction. Its no surprise many patients stop rehab after insurance stops. 2) Returning too early (regardless of rehab)... - regardless of the rehab quality and b return to Sport assessment, early return to Sport increases injury risk. - One of the reasons for this is the graft is still maturing and will continue to do this for at least 12-24 months. 3) Discontinuing strength training and prehab exercise after returning to Sport. To each other, your friends, family, professionals. Talk when youre feeling down, talk to others even when they look okay. You never know what someone is feeling inside. - Check your nuts (right now if you havent already) #Movember As much as Im looking forward to shaving this off, I know its been noticed, and I hope its raised some awareness. @ Brisbane City See more

09.01.2022 When to Front squat over a Back Squat? There are a lot of reasons you could choose one over the other (and some where both work great) but one of the reasons you'd choose a front squat is if you're specifically trying to target the quadriceps over the hamstrings. This might be in the case of a hamstring injury where loads need to be reduced, or where you're training the quads to increase strength in the presence of patellar femoral pain (PFP). This paper by Yavus (2015) indicated that the vastus medialis in particular has increased EMG activity during the front squat.

08.01.2022 Great to have the legend @daniel.rpetch from @resistance_ss in house this afternoon. We worked on core and pelvic floor assessment and exercises. #Movember. Not quite as easy as it sounds Resistance SS is a fantastic performance centre on the Northside hosting a number of high level sporting teams and athletes from across Queensland.

05.01.2022 TISSUE HEALING Factors affecting healing rates - Location, type, & severity of the injury - Nutritional status/Health - Genetics... - Training & injury history - Treatment and rehab type/intensity ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pain resolution and tissue healing are not always associated. Often pain will subside before tissue healing is complete. Pain can also remain long after tissue has returned to homeostasis. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Want to know more? 05.01.2022 Prehab doesnt have to be fancy, just effective. Groin injuries are one of the most common complaints from footballers returning in preseason. This Glute+adductor bridge is a favourite to incorporate during a warm-up prehab session. Not too strenuous that the muscles will be fatigued before training, but can definitely help to reduce hip/groin injury rates when performed consistently. ... #rehab #prehab #physio #sportsphysio #football #injury

04.01.2022 (Another) Triathlon post. Doing my first triathlon was tough, but just physically, but mentally for the whole year preparing. My preparation was far from great, and its taught me a lot about some of the barriers faced when it comes to training towards any long term goal. Its tough to start focused for a year, there were periods of good training, but with no immediate/short term goals, its hard to maintain that diligence to a program. ... Its tough to train alone, my training was much better when planned and organised WITH someone else. Its hard to know where to start. Starting can be the hardest part: it took me way too long to even buy a bike, and even longer to get to a pool for the first time. But once I did the first session, I found it much easier to continue. The lessons: Set short term targets and make sure you have someone/something to keep yourself accountable. Train with someone - a friend, coach, team - you will be more competitive, training will be more enjoyable, and youll have to make a commitment to turn up. Start now - dont keep procrastinating (Im writing this for myself) #Mooloolaba See more

03.01.2022 There are a lot of 'Passive treatment' strategies commonly used to treat knee OA pain. While some of these can be effective in reducing pain, it needs to be noted that a lot of the effect is related to 'contextual factors'. That is, a lot of the improvement in symptoms is NOT due to the direct effect of the treatment, rather an indirect modulation of pain based on how we perceive the treatment and it's effect. Does this mean these treatments don't work? No. But it does mean that we need to understand how these treatments may potentially help, and then utilise the effect on pain and tolerance to start a more 'active treatment' approach including exercise.

01.01.2022 How do you measure up? Jumping on the scale isnt always the best indicator of body composition. While not perfect, waist circumference will typically give a better indicator of adipose tissue. A large waist circumference indicates fat around the organs and is linked to a range of conditions. ... If youre struggling with your health, dont be afraid to speak about it. Talk to your doctor, or allied health professional.
