24.01.2022 Laddle set from my time in Germany. Made three sizes of these beauties. All have found homes. The stems are forged and terminate into a hollow form where the cup is joined. The handle is riveted into a ferrule. I was told it was cologneholz. Was that tongue in cheek? 22.01.2022 Teapot. Early nineties. Raised and fabricated aluminum. During my post graduate studies at the Canberra School of Art I worked with aluminum, creating a series of tea and coffee pots. 18.01.2022 Here’s one I call turtle grenade. Actually it was just about my all time favorite commission work. It’s literally made in the representation of a WWI grenade and was gifted to a retired army ordinance disposal expert. The external skin is from the original object. I made the internal ‘hip flask’. It was a great job using some pretty interesting techniques. 17.01.2022 Coffee pot 1992. Anodised aluminum. One of my favourite pieces now in the ANU collection. I’d love to take the lid off as it’s pretty interesting on the inside. The patina is made by submerging the work in a damp mix of pine needles and chemicals over several days. 10.01.2022 Last set of pics. Here’s the casting tree with the silver pouring funnel ready to be separated and machined. It was a little tricky because the most external brass cap from the original grenade is not the ‘actual’ opening to the vessel. So there’s a thread to hold it in place as well as a thread for the actual sealing cap. This means the contents remain in foodsafe silver. Confused? 08.01.2022 Making the turtle grenade flask I had the original casing of steel, the aluminium ring cap and brass screw cap. The other components were referenced and from that replicated in silver. The ‘screws’ are really caps machined in silver. I made a model in brass to feel comfortable that I was doing things correctly. Teaching at the time, I had access to a large hydraulic press which I used to press the halves. These were ‘overplanished’ to tidy up the curvatures. By fitting the ch...enier to the brass model I could more accurately determine the final cutaway required. I made a sleeve to slide over the fitted piece and filed it so I could replicate the cutout in each of the six segments in the silver one. You’ll see that in another post. Any questions fire away . 08.01.2022 Once the templates were made from the first model I went straight into fitting the chenier components into the silver body. It was important to mark out the segment alignment before soldering the halves together. I used a divider to mark out from the centre of each segment to slightly larger than the chenier diameter to assist with accuracy. It was also helpful to use longer length of chenier to check that I was filing in at the correct angle. You can see the turned and slotted caps. 07.01.2022 Teapot mid nineties. During my extended period in Europe I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Lino Sabattini for six weeks. I stayed with Lino and his Sister at the factory in Bregnano Italy. Sabatini Argentaria spa. I worked in the design studio transferring one of his services to a technical drawing.
