23.01.2022 There’s no denying it sometimes motherhood is just straight up hard. And regardless of how positive, happy and upbeat you are, regardless of how much you love your kids (we all do), how organised you are or how many happy photos you take some days it’s just HARD. And you know what? That’s okay. You aren’t alone Mummy, this I promise you. ... The real struggle, I’ve noticed, is getting to a place where you feel like it’s okay to say that it’s hard. Let’s get this straight right here and right now: admitting motherhood is hard is not saying you’re not grateful. You don’t have to love something all the time just to be grateful you have it. One of my favourite ways to help me refocus myself is to use affirmations. They can be fantastic to use when we are having a rough day. The reason for this is because our brain will pick up on the words we use and the associations with them. Words like ‘don’t’ and ‘struggle’ aren’t words we want to bring into focus, whereas ‘ease’ is a word that we want our brain to hone in on. It might sound a little strange at first, but once you get into the practice, you’ll see how different you day can be by simply switching out the negative words for positive ones. #postivemind #postiveparenting #motherhoodishard #weloveourkids #chrissymidwife #privatemidwiferycare #birthpreparation #baby #newborn

23.01.2022 LUNGING in labour! SUCH a great tool to help get baby into the right position. Let’s remember that your baby is navigating through your pelvis, which is movable and changes its diameters to help the baby fit. They also have to twist and turn and tuck to make their way down and out! How do they move? YOU HELP THEM! One of my mottos and you hear me say all the time is Trust your Instinctsif you listen to your body, certain things will feel better than others. DO them! A... lunge is a great way to mobilise and open one side of the pelvis to encourage the baby in that direction. I’m not talking lunge like an exercise lunge where you’re walking and bringing one knee to the ground (no one’s trying to wear you out more than labouring itself). I’m talking taking one leg and propping it up on a stool or stair or chair or something off the ground, turning your body away from your knee and rocking back and forth. Which side should you lunge? Do the side that feels best! One side will likely feel awful and the other tolerable, do the tolerable side! That’s your body telling you what it needs, no need to torture yourself! If both sides work, rotate sides! If you gotta get a leg up on the railing, do it! (Love this example ) That instinct is everything! You’re helping your pelvis and the baby and it might even help you cope! Did you lunge in labour? Which side felt better or worse?

21.01.2022 We all need encouragement, love and someone to remind us that we can and are doing it! If you know someone that recently (or not even that recently) had a baby, call them right now and tell them how amazing they're doing. Mummys, daddys you are doing great! If your baby is fed and responded to and loved, you are killing the game. Being a parent is hard. The transition to your new life is hard!! You are not alone in this journey and you are doing amazing. ... Take a moment a give yourself permission to be proud of the parent you are becoming. Stop stressing about being a perfect parent, they don't exist. You are the parent your baby needs. Tag your new or future parent friends- if you are tagged, someone else also thinks you're amazing too! #chrissymidwife #privatemidwiferycare #youareamazing #knowledgeispower #babies #baby #newborn #cutebaby

20.01.2022 Did you know that an estimated 10-20% of women have flat or inverted nipples?! It's a fairly common situation, but unfortunately, there's a huge misconception that it means you won't be able to breastfeed! While it can be a bit more challenging to latch Bub onto a flat or inverted nipple, it's definitely not impossible and shouldn't stand in the way of being able to have a successful breastfeeding journey. #pregnancy #postnatalsupport #baby #motherhood #newborn #love #babyboy #babygirl #family #womencenteredmaternitycare #privateantenatalclasses #birth #pregnant #postpartum #women #breastfeeding #bodypositive #chrissymidwife #goldcoastmidwife #privatemidwiferycare #mumtobe #mummytobe #endorsedmidwife #ibclc

19.01.2022 Do you have Mastitis? First of all, what is it? Mastitis is an inflammation of the breast that can be caused by obstruction, infection and/or allergy. The incidence of postpartum mastitis in Western women is 20%! ... Mastitis is most common in the first 2-3 weeks of breastfeeding, but can occur at any stage of lactation. Mastitis may come on abruptly, and usually affects only one breast! Symptoms: Painful, hard lump in breast (usually begins as a clogged duct) Painful feeding Swelling Redness (or red streaks on breast) Tenderness General malaise, chills, aches Fever What to do? If you think you have Mastitis, ESPECIALLY if you have a fever already, it’s really important to call your midwife or OB! Mastitis can be easily treated with a prescription of antibiotics! Rest LOTS, empty breasts LOTS, and hydrate LOTS too! Have you had mastitis? #chrissymidwife #postnatalmidwiferycare #mastitis #ouch #breastfeeding

16.01.2022 5 Things to know about the postpartum period. 1. Rest is healing!!! So take it easy and remember to SLOW down. 2. Nutritious foods will make you stronger - Calcium rich foods will support lactation, Vitamin B & D boost energy & mood. The only thing more important than eating is WHAT you eat!!... 3. Keep drinking your water - hydration helps the body process and balance the sweating, swelling and milk production you are experiencing. 4. Did you just drop your hormones?? The massive shift in your hormones from a pregnancy state to a non-pregnancy state will mean that you cycle from Happy, Sad, mad and hangry FREQUENTLY. DONT FORGET to reach out to your care provider if you need to. 5. Be a planner - you will thank yourself for it later. Plan meals ahead of time, touch base with local support groups, set baby boundaries with friends and family before the baby arrives, discuss with your partner what this new life will look like - and plan how you will both manage your new relationship dynamic! How are you planning your postpartum ?? #chrissymidwife #privatemidwiferycare #postnatalrecovery

13.01.2022 4th trimester support is so vital!!! Most Australian women see their care provider 12+ times in pregnancy. However, many women only receive 2 postnatal care visits....... 2???? THAT IS NOT ENOUGH If you would like some extra support in the postnatal period, I would love to help you. Contact me today to book a 6 week postnatal care package. www.chrissymidwife.com

11.01.2022 Gestational diabetes is something you’ll be tested for during your prenatal care Depending on your age/weight (and a couple other factors) you may be tested once OR twice. (Once early around 14-18 weeks, and another time normally at 24-28 weeks) Most providers have you drink the drink ... It’s a little bottle of orange (or clear) liquid, and you’ll need to drink it about an hour before getting your blood drawn-to test your glucose level! Your provider basically wants to see if your body can metabolise the sugar in a certain amount of time-if your level is too high, it means you body is struggling a bit to metabolise sugar, and you may have gestational diabetes. When taking the test you will be required to fast for about 8 hours before, You will go into the pathology lab and have a blood test then be given "THE DRINK". Once you have the drink you will have a 2nd blood test one hour later; and THEN a 3rd blood test another hour later. Unfortunately when doing this test you must not eat (you can drink lots of water!!!). If your numbers are too high at any stage of the glucose test, you’ll be diagnosed with gestational diabetes. MANY women are able to just monitor their blood sugars during pregnancy and change their diets-without having to go on medications! It’s not amazing (it kind of tastes like melted jello haha), and it’s SUPER sweet! Who remembers this test?? #chrissymidwife #pregnancyeducation #privatemidwiferycare #glucosetolerancetest #sugarforbreakfast

09.01.2022 Mothers and babies have a physiologic need to be together at the moment of birth and during the hours and days that follow. It's really important to keep mothers and babies together after the birth. Evidence supports immediate, uninterrupted skin-to-skin care after vaginal birth and during and after caesarean birth for all stable mothers and babies, regardless of how baby will be fed. When babies are born, providing there are no medical reasons to separate them from their mo...thers, routine procedures like weighing and examinations can wait until mum and baby have had that special and essential bonding time. Skin-to-skin contact provides real health benefits. It reduces both mum and baby’s stress levels, helps regulate the baby’s body temperature, promotes oxytocin production and slows bleeding in mum as a result. It also increases chances of successful breastfeeding. #embracethegoldenhour #skintoskin #chrissymidwife #privatemidwiferycare #postnatalsupport #birthpreparation

09.01.2022 External pressures to ‘have a break’ from your baby can cause a lot of anxiety for mums. There is no right time to start having time apart from your baby. You will know when the time is right for you and your baby #chrissymidwife #privatemidwiferycare #goldcoastnorthernrivers

05.01.2022 Did you or someone you know have a caesarean birth? It is NOT once a cesarean, always a caesarean! VBAC is associated with decreased maternal morbidity and a decreased risk of complications in future pregnancies as well as a decrease in the overall caesarean delivery rate! Ultimately, after counseling (from your care provider), the ultimate decision to undergo TOLAC (trial of labour after caesarean) or repeat caesarean delivery should be made by the PATIENT in consultation ...with her obstetrician or other obstetric care provider. It’s your body, your decision ladies! And VBAC IS a reasonable option and can be done safely! Want to learn more? Contact me today to learn all the facts about VBAC so that you CAN make an informed decision. My VBAC birth preparation class will walk you through all the stats, risks, benefits, how to deal with a less-than-supportive provider, common questions, we talk induction, chances, do's and don'ts and set you up with realistic expectations for what your VBAC could look like. I want to empower you with options, and to remind you that whatever route of delivery you choose is your decision to make. You should be empowered by your decision, confident in your next steps and let go being able to just labour. You are not doing something radical by pursuing a VBAC, you're labouring! 05.01.2022 A huge PSA to our loving family + friends: Please remember our sweet baby isn’t the only one in the postpartum relationship. YES! Hold the baby, love the baby, bask in the pure innocence that babies bring to the world! Absolutely!... But also offer a hand, cook a meal, talk to the mother, ask how SHE is feeling not about the baby, but herself. Compliment her on a job well done, not just when she’s beaming at her baby+ joyful about motherhood, but ESPECIALLY when she’s feeling moody, down, or frustrated. Sometimes, a kind + unexpected offering, talk, or compliment can truly improve a new mummy's state of mind. Share this with your family and friends for a gentle reminder! #chrissymidwifeprivatemidwiferycare #chrissymidwifepostnatalcare

02.01.2022 The question that most infuriates me as a midwife is, "Is the baby a good baby?", When did society suddenly decide that a baby that wakes during the night crying, who wants to be fed, or cuddled by it's mother is in fact a BAD baby! Is an adult who wakes during the night a BAD adult?? I occasionally wake during the night to go to the bathroom, because I'm hungry..... (Or because my husband steals all the covers and I wake freezing). Why is it OK for us as adults, to wake d...uring the night but our baby who is days, weeks, or months old are classified as BAD. Your baby is waking because they are hungry, thirsty, cold, wet, dirty and/or lonely! (all valid reasons to wake during the night). The is your baby good question can cause huge anxiety and uncertainty in new mums. What we SHOULD be asking as a society is NOT "Is your baby being good?", BUT "What can I do to better support you in your new parenting journey?" #chrissymidwife #chrissymidwifepostnatalsupport #goldcoastmidwifery #allbabysaregood #babiesneedlove #ifindoubtwhipitout
