24.01.2022 #MeetTheStaff - Vicki at Chamberlain Gardens Aged Care Ok, so I really dont like to talk about myself, so here goes. I was born in Brisbane. My Mum was a stay at home mum and Dad was a carpenter. Im the youngest of five kids. Dad decided to pull the roof off our house and build a second floor. He would have a ladder against the house to gain access to upstairs while working on it. As he was upstairs working away one day, he heard a little voice say Me help Daddy. He and ...I chatted away for a little bit, then he realised where he was and how he would get there he turned and I was standing there with a teddy bear (according to Dad Nearly the same size as you!). Surprised, he asked How did you both get up here? I shrugged, and replied I climbed up the ladder and swung in like you did! Well, after that, the ladder would be pulled up to the top floor with him whenever he worked up there! My beautiful Mother passed away as a result of a collision with a drunk driver. Dad remarried another beautiful lady and shes been my Mum now for about 35 years, and Id be lost without her! I married the love of my life when I was 20. Weve just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary with our four loving children (aged 23, 21, 19 & 13). I was a stay at home mum for most of our married life, but when our youngest went to school I started looking for something I could do during school hours. This is how my cleaning business came about and I ran it for about 4 years. I decided to pursue my childhood dream of being a nurse and trained to be an aged care nurse, finishing in November 2016. Last year, I decided to study again and in November completed my Leisure and Lifestyle Certificate. I have the best job, with the best people to support me, and the greatest people to work with.

23.01.2022 #MeetTheResidents - Wendy at Chamberlain Gardens Aged Care Wendy was born in the 1940s in Albsery Buckinghamshire, UK. The middle child of three girls, Wendy attended primary school at West Cliff, UK and left school when she was 14 to enter the workforce, as it was after the Second World War and times were tough.... Wendy worked at a number of positions to make ends meet; her first job was at Boots the Chemist, West Cliff where Wendy helped with dispensary and book work. Wendy moved on to work for the factory Marconis, working with the French testing the controls for the Concord Aeroplane. Wendy met her husband (now deceased) at her sisters 21st birthday party and they had a son named Richard. Wendys parents and sisters had moved to Sydney so, in 1969, Wendy decided to move with Richard who was 14 months old to Sydney, becoming a Ten Pound Pom. Wendy said she was on the last deployment of Ten Pound Poms, arriving on the ship Archille Lauro, which later sank off the coast of Somalia in 1994 due to a fire on board. Its other claim to fame was a hijacking off the Coast of Egypt in 1985. Wendy said it was a long 8 week trip, but they were lucky enough to get off the ship at different ports to have a look around. This was a relief, as conditions on the ship were not the best. Wendy said she will never forget the beautiful sight arriving in Sydney and seeing the Sydney Harbour Bridge and then the faces of her parents. When Wendy and Richard had left the UK it had been snowing, and on arrival, the sun was shining and the harbour looked beautiful. Wendy was living in a flat at Dulwich Hill; she had only been there 3 months when her flat was robbed. Wendy worked at numerous jobs; a bakery, newsagent and Jewels Food store to make ends meet so she could bring up her son. Wendy worked for many years for both Coles and Woolworths refurbishing their old shops, her specialty being the deli section. Over the years, Wendy became a supervisor and was in a managerial position. Wendy had to leave many years later due to declining health. Wendy says she was always active; she loved to swim, play squash, walked twice a day, in the mornings with her dog and then later on her own. Wendy loves all sports except tennis; she played squash, attended water aerobics and loved her garden. Wendy said she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, tapestry, jigsaw puzzles and was never bored with her own company. Wendy has two granddaughters to her son Richard, who live locally and he and his partner Leah are expecting a third child. Wendy said she is happy living here; she had no choice, but has accepted her lot due to her declining health. Her son Richard has been a gem taking over the daily tasks for Wendy and ensuring her room at Chamberlain Gardens is looking homely.

18.01.2022 #MeetTheVolunteers - Sue at Chamberlain Gardens Aged Care Hello Everyone, My name is Sue Ward and I have been a volunteer at Chamberlain Gardens for 5 years, enjoying the company of our lovely residents whom I have grown very fond of.... I had always worked in offices as a PA or in the accounts department but those jobs pale in comparison to doing a simple task like supporting a resident with their meal, calling out the numbers for their beloved bingo game or just sitting with them for a chat. These are things they look forward to every week therefore putting joy into their day. I have been married for 46 years and have 2 daughters who have given us 3 grandsons who are the light of our lives. It has been extremely hard recently due to Covid-19, not being able to give them a cuddle and being that they are only 6, 4 and 3 years old its hard for them to understand. We moved to the Central Coast from Sydney in 1988 where we built in the leafy suburb of Wyoming. We were owner/ builders which we realised very early on was a massive task and we must have been a little crazy to attempt it. I left my job and took on work as full time project manager and in doing so learned many skills and also aged very quickly. The outcome was a beautiful home in which we still live today. One of my great loves is gardening so with such a large block of land to work with and the help of my mother, I quickly got to work on our many gardens which still bring me huge amounts of joy. We are also big travellers. We have a campervan, so we love to take off to the bush or the coast and visit many places all over Australia. We have also seen a lot of the world (60 countries last count). The best of these being 6 months spent living the many cultures of Europe, staying a week in each. As my husband comes from Northern Ireland, it is always great to catch up with his lovely family. We only hope that when this pandemic is over we are able to continue with our many journeys but for now, we are all in this together and health and safety comes first.

15.01.2022 #MeetTheStaff - Maguy from Casa Mia Aged Care in Padstow Maguy was born in Chekka, North Lebanon and was one of eight, having four brothers and three sisters. Up until the age of 18, Maguy was very sporty and had a passion for running, which she was very good at, holding the record in Lebanon for the 700m cross country run between the ages of 12-14. Maguy was so good, she was trialed for the Olympics Games. Unfortunately, the war started and so was not to be.... Maguy is deeply religious and at age 18, Maguy made the decision to enter the convent, where she began teaching in various subjects. After six years, Maguy left the convent and returned home. It was there she met her future husband Joseph, a long time neighbour who was returning from Australia to visit his family. Maguy and Joseph had three beautiful sons and became soccer parents, driving their boys to various matches they participated in. She is very proud they all obtained a Masters degree, two in Education and one in Criminology and Business. Maguy loves languages and is fluent in Arabic, French, English and understands Italian. Maguy became a full time carer after Joseph became sick and after his passing, Maguy decided to go back to TAFE and study Cert 3 in AIN and Cert4 in Leisure and Lifestyle. Maguy joined Christadelphian Aged Care in September 2019. Her love and commitment to the residents, her desire to always learn and the experiences of her life makes her an asset to the family at Casa Mia.

14.01.2022 #MeetTheResidents - Ananda at Northcourt Aged Care in North Parramatta I was convinced my dad Ananda Wettasinghe was a child genius the day I heard him tell us a story of how at age 6 he put wires into a lemon and made a tuneable radio, and would climb up a tree to listen to the first radio transmissions in Sri Lanka. It was from this same tree that he witnessed the flight of the Japanese bomber squadron that bombed Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) during World War 2. It was this fea...t that convinced me of this, not the fact that he was the leading engineer who built the first 5 TV transmission stations and towers across the island as Director of Engineering at ITN Sri Lanka. Although, a major part of his career he spent pioneering television, his first love was actually radio. He was the youngest radio amateur in Sri Lanka at age 16 in 1945, building his own valve radio transmitter by himself with the guidance of his much-loved mentor and physics teacher at St Aloysius College Galle. His Sri Lankan call sign was 4S7NB - better known as Nancy Baker. His Australian call sign was VK2IHV - a passion he continued till 2018 from self-built valve transmitters till the age of computers. Our earliest memories are of treading carefully over wires, valves and ceramic insulators strewn across the floor of his radio shack and hearing the Big Ben blast through the radio at 4 am every morning which he used to always set his watch to, though he was always running late! Some of my favourite memories were tagging along on family trips when he went to scout for places to put transmitting towers. He had a great group of very close friends from childhood who, to date keep in touch with him across the oceans. Though he was a genius, I would say his true genius was in being able to make the perfect cup of tea every time, as the designated tea maker of our household, a void that could never be filled by any of us. He was always a loving husband, a kind and generous father and grandfather and was a great supporter of my mum’s and my community work. He was always a perfectionist in his work, committed, dedicated and brave - I only found this out when his immediate Boss (Director General of ITN) was shot dead by terrorists and even though my father was also under death threat, just for going to work, he never missed a day. To date the words that echo in my head, is his advice to me as a teenager: never look in the mirror to find beauty, rather cultivate beauty within. I would say is an extraordinary, rare and unique human being. Story by Himali Wettasinghe - Ananda’s daughter

08.01.2022 #MeetTheResidents - Marieta at Northcourt Aged Care in North Parramatta In October, we saw our oldest resident, Marieta, celebrate turning 100! Marieta was born in Eastwood on October 11, 1920. She was the oldest of five children, with two brothers and two sisters.... She grew up in Carlingford and lived there all her life until moving to Northcourt. She started her working like as a machinist, then married in 1942 at 22 and had one son, Gary, who was born in 1943. After this she became a dedicated homemaker for her family. She is an avid animal lover, having had dogs, cats, chooks, possums and even a wallaby as furry and feathered companions. Marieta’s whole life has revolved around her family and extended family, so it was only fitting that everyone was there to celebrate with her on her special day. She continued to receive many birthday wishes over the month, receiving cards and messages from HRH Queen Elizabeth, the Governor General of Australia, Prime Minister Scott Morrison and the NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian. Marieta puts her good health and long life down to healthy living she never smoked or drank, and according to her son Gary very rarely uses bad language (so she obviously handles stress very well!).

02.01.2022 #MeetTheVolunteers - Jessica at Chamberlain Gardens Aged Care at Wyoming Hello everyone, My name is Jessica Long and I was born in South Korea. My mum was a stay at home mum and my dad was a project manager in an architecture company for 30 years. My parents always supported myself and my younger brother, they provided us everything. I had a great childhood and I feel very blessed to have such amazing parents.... I studied fashion design at university and I went to Japan to study more fashion and the Japanese language. I really enjoyed living in Japan and loved their food and culture. After I left japan, I came to Australia for a working holiday and I went to college to study business management in Sydney. In Sydney, I met the love of my life in 2010. We had our wedding both in Australia and Korea. We are celebrating our tenth wedding anniversary this year with our two lovely boys (aged 7 and 4). I have been working as a beautician and before that I was working in the hospitality industry. In both of those industries, I had rapport with the elderly clients and customers from the bottom of my heart. They are like my other family to me. I decided to volunteer at Chamberlain Gardens to acquire more experience. My future goal involves learning as much as I can and I would love to have the opportunity to work as an Assistant in Nursing at Chamberlain Gardens one day.
