18.01.2022 Today's feast of St Martin has had an intriguing influence on the English language through his patronage of French soldiers. His cloak was a prized relic of the Merovingian kings. Its custodian was called a cappellanu. Other priests who served the army became known as cappellani, from which the English word chaplain is derived. Temporary places of worship built for the relic were known as a "cappella," or little cloak. Soon all small churches became known as "chapels" as the association with St Martin's cloak was forgotten.
