25.01.2022 In this week's 'Spotlight on a Counsellor', we drop by the comfy couch of Vicky Hamey, our CCAA NSW Member to find out how she balances being a Christian Counsellor in a COVID society. 1) What led you to pursue Christian counselling? -My faith and I don't have the answers, I wanted to find the answers within myself. Prior to counselling, I started a moms group in church which helped me realise the importance of helping people and the impact of counselling within the church.... 2) How are you able to intentionally incorporate faith in your counselling work? -It's about making a safe space for my clients, to talk about their doubts and fears. For Christians, it’s ensuring they can talk about their fears in a non-judgemental space. For me, It’s intentionally helping my clients come to an understanding that God is on their side, and to rebuild their sense of self and self-esteem. 3) How did CCAA help you throughout your journey as a counsellor? - CCAA is the bridge I needed to continue learning how to integrate my faith into my practice, it’s my support system. How have you had to adapt to counselling in a Covid-world? I had to learn to do online counselling more proficiently. I quickly implemented a feedback forum on how to improve my clients' online experience and set boundaries around zoom sessions, ie. finding a quiet location, ensuring there were no distractions. But most importantly, I had to provide that extra reassurance for some of my clients. 4) What are some things that help you prepare for a counselling session? -That's changed over the years, I used to read the notes, read up on the client but now I pray for my clients, and pray for wisdom to assist them. 5) What are some practices you do to maintain your own wellbeing? -Self care, praying on the way home, and leaving my concerns for my clients at work. If I do have concerns I would seek advice from my supervisor, so I am not alone with the problem. l meet my client where they're at and don’t allow that to spill over into my personal life. 6)Do you have a specialisation and why did you choose to specialise? -Longer term therapy, psychotherapy, and working with couples. You never know whos’ going to walk through your door, this idea drives me to have more passion to gain
