24.01.2022 A lovely night of fellowship and dining was had as we celebrated and reflected on the past, present and potential of CCAA(SA) Inc. Time was given to recognise the service of long-serving and current committee members, as their roles transfer and adapt to a national branch committee. Farewell and thank you to Maxine Litchfield who has served as our Member Care Officer. CCAA(SA) Inc. has now officially merged into the National body, becoming the South Australian branch of CCAA.... This frees up time from administration and allows us to focus on serving our current and future SA members. The future for CCAA is looking positive as we work towards a streamlining of processes, whilst endeavouring to build on the relationships so important in the world in which we live. (Rob Salmon) Interested in joining the SA branch committee? We are always keen to expand our team and benefit from others' experience, giftings and perspective. For more information contact Rob Salmon: [email protected]

24.01.2022 COVID-19 update for Counsellors The last few weeks have taken us into what must feel like a new world for most, as we face the worldwide pandemic of COVID-19. Commentators say we havent faced a challenge like this as a Nation and a Global community in 100 years. I am writing to the CCAA community of members to help with some of the challenges our industry is facing in particular. The social distancing mandate from government may mean we may choose to work online in preferen...ce to seeing clients face to face. It is important, if you choose to work face to face, that you communicate with your clients about the new guidelines issued by the Health Department Coronavirus (COVID-19) Health Alert so that everyone is kept safe: https://www.health.gov.au//novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov-hea I am including an article written by one of our members that gives some practical tips for online counselling and caring for yourself. I understand many of you may not have ventured into this space before so it is important to be prepared: https://mcusercontent.com//Practical_Tips_for_Online_Couns Also, PACFA have created a page that can be used as an info sheet for clients or in a waiting area. COVID-19 flyer: https://mcusercontent.com//IMPORTANT_INFORMATION_CONCERNIN This situation is constantly changing and we will try to stay in contact with you, our members. It may be helpful at this time to join the Facebook group for your state so that you may be able to share your experiences or questions during this challenging time. Contact your branch convenor for more info - please check the website for their details. Above all, lets pray for our world, our nation, our clients and each other. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13) Bless you, John Andersen CCAA President

22.01.2022 Online Event 2 hours of Professional Development DEPRESSION: A MULTIFACETED DISORDER WHICH REQUIRES A MANY FACTORED RESPONSE Presented by Dr Willem Boeree Monday 4th May, 2020... 7 - 9 pm (Note: The time zone is 7pm Adelaide) After many years, stigma and misunderstanding still exists and its important that we, as Counsellors/Psychotherapists, are not only well acquainted with the problem of depression, but that we can also undo some of the very real stigma, shame and guilt which is so often still attached to the problem of depression. In this PD, then, well consider such matters as the reality of depression, the root cause of depression and a variety of healing responses which we may use in our work with our clients thus enabling them to see their grey skies turn into blue skies once more. Early Bird Discount ends on the 28th April 2020! For more information and to register visit www.ccaa.net.au//depression-turning-the-grey-skies-into-b/

(*Article title by Dominic Hofstetter) Keynote 3. Spirituality and Worldview Issues in Counselling: Implications for Christian Counsellors - Neil Roberts @ 2:45 pm (2:15pm Adelaide time) Ethical practice demands that counsellors bracket their own values, and while Christian counsellors can know this explicitly, the practical experience of being confronted with clients who hold very different values and beliefs can create dilemmas for some developing and experienced counsellors. This presentation will introduce some observations on potential difficulties created in trying to integrate a Christian worldview, with the many historical and philosophical influences that have travelled alongside it. Discussion around some of the common dilemmas faced by Christian counsellors regarding spirituality and worldview issues will be invited throughout the presentations with direct questions being presented to the participants. 14.01.2022 Upcoming online PD event via Zoom: Anxiety in Children: How to Calm and Strengthen an Anxious Brain Presented by Donna Longden... Category A (2 PD hours) This event will not be recorded - be sure not to miss out! Monday 27th July 2020 7 - 9pm (ACST, Adelaide time) During anxiety, certain parts of the brain become dominant and drive behaviour. This is evidence of a strong, healthy brain switching into survival mode, but when it happens too much or unnecessarily, it feels awful. Responses become rigid the response to dangerous situations also becomes the response to situations that arent dangerous at all. Our internal alarm becomes faulty! Healthy living means being able to meet different situations with different responses, depending on whats needed. For this to happen, the different parts of the brain need to work well independently, but they also need to work well together. How do we engage a young person to look at these false alarms, to face these anxieties that impact their quality of life? We will explore together, the brains response to anxiety, how to engage a young person in working with their anxieties and some of the most common approaches to working with anxiety. Register now! Early Bird pricing ends 20th July 2020 www.ccaa.net.au//anxiety-in-children-how-to-calm-and-stre/
14.01.2022 Dont miss this special 2-day PD event in November. An important masterclass for therapists and other practitioners: Predators, Paedophiles and Narcissists Presented by Joy Anasta and Carl Collins. 7th and 8th November, 9 - 5 pm... Ikon Institute of Australia, Rundle Mall, Adelaide One of the reasons that predators are so successful in our society is because of the perpetration of false beliefs, even amongst practitioners, about who they are, how they operate and how they groom their victims. These perpetrators are highly skilled, and highly invisible. And they are prolific. Taking children from their parents is rarely done with force; kids are not stolen at gunpoint. They are taken through a form of seduction, one that aims not at passion, but at trust YOURS". (Gavin de Becker) This masterclass intends to debunk these beliefs, and to build thorough and capable competence for the practitioner who not only works with the victims but also acts within a protective capacity. The PD will involve presenters, a panel answering questions, case studies, and group work. Topics will include: Types and how they present How they groom and choose their victims Female predators Opportunistic predators Effective child safety, and more Limit of 30 participants For more details and to register: www.ccaa.net.au/professional-development-events

03.01.2022 In this week's 'Spotlight on a Counsellor', we drop by the comfy couch of Vicky Hamey, our CCAA NSW Member to find out how she balances being a Christian Counsellor in a COVID society. 1) What led you to pursue Christian counselling? -My faith and I don't have the answers, I wanted to find the answers within myself. Prior to counselling, I started a moms group in church which helped me realise the importance of helping people and the impact of counselling within the church.... 2) How are you able to intentionally incorporate faith in your counselling work? -It's about making a safe space for my clients, to talk about their doubts and fears. For Christians, it’s ensuring they can talk about their fears in a non-judgemental space. For me, It’s intentionally helping my clients come to an understanding that God is on their side, and to rebuild their sense of self and self-esteem. 3) How did CCAA help you throughout your journey as a counsellor? - CCAA is the bridge I needed to continue learning how to integrate my faith into my practice, it’s my support system. How have you had to adapt to counselling in a Covid-world? I had to learn to do online counselling more proficiently. I quickly implemented a feedback forum on how to improve my clients' online experience and set boundaries around zoom sessions, ie. finding a quiet location, ensuring there were no distractions. But most importantly, I had to provide that extra reassurance for some of my clients. 4) What are some things that help you prepare for a counselling session? -That's changed over the years, I used to read the notes, read up on the client but now I pray for my clients, and pray for wisdom to assist them. 5) What are some practices you do to maintain your own wellbeing? -Self care, praying on the way home, and leaving my concerns for my clients at work. If I do have concerns I would seek advice from my supervisor, so I am not alone with the problem. l meet my client where they're at and don’t allow that to spill over into my personal life. 6)Do you have a specialisation and why did you choose to specialise? -Longer term therapy, psychotherapy, and working with couples. You never know whos’ going to walk through your door, this idea drives me to have more passion to gain

02.01.2022 Todays online webinars, live from the CCAA Conference in Brisbane: Sunday 15th September Keynote 6. Keeping the Faith - Irene Alexander @ 9:00 am (8:30am Adelaide time) If the soul is like a shy wild creature that only comes out when it is very safe, how do I as a counsellor or spiritual companion make that safe space? How do I first give my own soul that safe space where my true self flourishes? How do I protect it from the cultural pollutants so dangerously toxic to perso...ns who want to follow Jesus, as Eugene Peterson names it? Or from a totally different standpoint, how do I anchor myself, when Poor bugger white fella got no dreaming, when my society has so little overarching story, and grounding in the creation? On the one hand our academic institutions have become so super-rational that a psychology student explained to me I believe in God in my heart but not in my head any more. And on the other spirituality is such a diffuse term that it can mean almost anything. Ironically psychology is now beginning to discover mindfulness practices which have long been present in church tradition. So how are we as Christian counsellors today, to incorporate the spiritual practices and insights of our faith? And how does professionalism fit if we are to seek first Gods kingdom? And interfaith inclusion? How do we keep the faith navigating these stormy waters? Keynote 7. Helping Men in a #MeToo Generation - Dr Allan Meyer @ 10:30 am (10am Adelaide time) Sex is more problematic for men than it is for women. The biggest problem women have with sex may well be men. The biggest problem men have with sex is themselves. In a highly sexualised world men need help. Mis-managed sex drives damage relationships in general, marriages in particular, destroy reputations, ruin careers and land people in jail. What are the issues and what kind of help can make a difference? Keynote 8. Final Wrap up - Denis O'Hara @ 2:00 pm (1:30pm Adelaide time) Closing Session - Denis will pull together the conference on how we can as Christian and counsellors move forward into the ever changing world whilst remaining true. Trinity Baptist Church, 8a Bedford Square, Colonel Light Gardens, SA 6:30pm - 9pm (this event follows our PD presentation with Dominie Nelson 3pm - 6pm) CCAA(SA) has a rich history, from its early beginnings in 1997 until now, when as an organisation it will no longer exist as an identity in its own right. The journey has seen a number of people on the committee, as well as in our membership. The evening will begin with a short presentation of the organisation from our previous year, as part of what would have been our Annual General Meeting. We will then enjoy a four course meal whilst we take a trip down memory lane, celebrating the people who have played significant roles in our 22 years here in South Australia. This is an invitation to all our current, as well as past members (partners are welcome to attend). We do hope you can join us. To register visit www.ccaa.net.au/professional-development-events
