04.01.2022 Several months ago I received a heartwarming email from a colleague of mine from Smiths Hill High school. Although I didn’t know Carmen Greentree very well during our time at school, I knew of her, but I had no idea of what she was about to reveal. After introducing herself again, she proceeded to tell me she had written a memoir and that I was mentioned. According to her, I had influenced her to begin surfing, a sport which she would go onto competing professionally on the w...orld stage. This grinding competitive schedule however left her searching for something else, something spiritual. A quest which led her to India in search of spiritual tutorship, what she encountered however was a terrifying and brutal abduction at the hands of stranger. In her memoir a Dangerous Pursuit of Happiness she recounts this journey and her road to escape and recovery and in her email to me I was asked if I wanted to paint her a picture to use as her cover. This is what I came up with. After weeks of contemplating exactly what image I could create to honour her courage and strength I visualised the girl curled in a nautilus shell being washed upon a shore. A picture of vulnerability, travel, strength, beauty and spiritual renewal.
