25.01.2022 The 4th S - S W I N G / R O C K Swinging (or really any rhythmic movement including patting) turns on the motion sensors in baby’s ears which activates their calming reflex. Tiny jiggly movements are best (when you can see baby’s head jiggle a little), and like with shushing, match your movement with the intensity of his cries. The louder the cries, the more vigorous the movement. Car & pram rides get a good head jiggle on, and how good are baby carriers? You need only to wa...lk around AND arms free for mum #newbornbaby #newborn #thefourthtrimester #settlingtips #sleeptips ##responsiveparenting #babywearing #rockyourbaby #rockingbaby #handsonsettling #swaddle #whitenoise #mumsofmelbourne #melbournesleepconsultant

10.01.2022 S U C K I N G - The final of Dr Harvey Karp’s 5 S’s Whether it be a dummy, finger or the boob, sucking has a calming effect on newborn babies. And if you’re going to use the other of Karp’s S’s in your settling technique, sucking is like the icing on the cake. The tricky bit is, that you need to get bub nice and calm before offering a dummy or boob, and that’s where those other four S’s come in handy! They set you up for success If you have a bubba who doesn’t seem interes...ted in a dummy, you can always teach them! Each time you offer it, wait for bub to suck and then give it a gentle tug and you’ll notice they suck it back in. Repeat it several times at each offering and before you know it you’ll have another little calming tool up your sleeve. Worried bub will develop a sleep association. Try not to worry about it, and enjoy the newborn bubble while you can. You can work on teaching bub to self settle closer to 4 months. #newborn #newborntips #newbornsleep #newbornbaby #mumssupportingmums #sleephabits #sleepconsultant #sleepsupport #thefourthtrimester #mum #tiredmum #newbornbubble #newborncuddles #dummy #breastfeeding

10.01.2022 S I D E / S T O M A C H S E T T L E - The 2nd S! Now before continuing with this post I must note that we only use this position for settling and ALWAYS place baby on their back for sleep. We often use the Side or Stomach position to settle a bub as imitates baby’s position in the uterus and this triggers a calming reflex. ... Newborns are not used to lying flat on their back so this position makes them feel more secure keeps them from setting off their startle reflex. You can either hold bub against your chest with their head clear of your shoulder, pop them in the football hold (pictured), or lay Bub in their cot and roll them toward you with a hand on their shoulder and one hand free to Pat their bum or back. Have a play around and find out what your babe responds best to. #sidesettling #startlereflex #thefourthtrimester #settlingtechniques #newborn #newborn #newbornbaby #tiredmum #sleepdeprived #newbornsnuggles #babybubble #sleepconsultant #sleepsupport #sleepingbaby #calming #babyreflex
