25.01.2022 Steven McClure recent work - fine, sensuous, translucent porcelain work, recently shot in my studio. The work has a lovely folded quality and comes to life under the studio lights. Shooting notes: Same camera, medium telephoto, with top soft-box with restricted output. Plus a few little photographer's witch doctor tricks. I have to be careful not to 'burn' the top of the pieces, yet they need the contrast of the near white with the shadows. A bit of a balancing act, as is a lot of shooting on a tabletop.
18.01.2022 Here's a copy of the shot that got me into the finalists for the Head-On Photographic festival in Sydney currently. It's title is 'The Bicycle'. It's entered under the landscape category and will be on show in an exhibition with other exhibitors at the NSW Houses of Parliament. The original was taken in Mardin, a south eastern desert setting hill-side town in Turkey, not far from Syria. I went through there three and a bit years ago, before all the trouble in Syria erupted. It was a great trip, and Mardin is very photogenic. If you are interested there are more related shots on my web site at christophersanders.zenfolio.com Just go to the bottom of the folder icons and click (on the home page).
10.01.2022 Robyn Phelan's recent work deals with issues related to climate change. They have been modelled as wall mounted relief pieces. Robyn wanted a high key setting hence the white ground, which works well with the muted darker cobalt decoration. Shooting notes: it was easier to shoot this piece from overhead onto a white ground. A bit tricky lining it all up and getting the camera safely overhead, but easier than bashing holes in the wall for mounting and then dealing with marks and scuffs that are already there.
09.01.2022 Shot in my studio the last few days, mixed media sculptures by Steven McClure. Essentially constructed from small shards of ceramic fixed to glass leaves to create an engaging illusion of form and movement. The camera loves these and varying the lighting creates a range of shadows that add to the interest. This is one of the most intricate works I've shot yet at heart the concept is quite simple. Camera notes: Like a lot of glass, it looks better when shot on a darkened set. Controlled top and some side light have been added. Scary items to handle, but the artist gave good handling instructions! For these shots I've added a 30% opacity watermark, and while not wishing to overly intrude on the artist's work, I at least look for studio acknowledgement for items that are shared freely on the 'net. 03.01.2022 Ex student gone good - Amanda Algra,McMillan. Great to see her work and to have it go through my studio. Amanda is from the NT and works as a lecturer in Visual Art at the Desert Springs Campus at Alice. Something of the Alice in this work? Camera notes: quite shiny surfaces need to be tamed, plus consideration of the setting colour with these strong colours. White might render less impact, so black with side light seemed to be the go. Some bounce used to get light back into the front and then some subtelties in Lightroom and Photoshop. These are shot on low iso and look pretty good in close up.
