25.01.2022 Acupuncture supports IVF treatment http://ow.ly/f4Hq30nAVr3

25.01.2022 Dug out from a few years back. Yes now is the time to be addressing those seasonal allergies. http://ow.ly/V7tn30mfgTm

25.01.2022 These are some well summarised diet/lifestyle pillars. I like the choice of the word "intentional". It highlights that we should all be aware of our daily habits, and constantly reviewing and fine tuning them. http://ow.ly/p0ds30mpeX2

24.01.2022 To especially my chronic fatigue patients, these are important lifestyle interventions to assist you through treatment and beyond.

23.01.2022 It's nice to see the body of evidence for the efficacy of acupuncture maturing. This review (link to the abstract below) summarises the many mechanisms/benefits for how acupuncture works including anti-oxidant, neuro-protective, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and hormone regulating effects. http://ow.ly/DRd530nAUCm

23.01.2022 Below is some information regarding maintaining your treatment over the coming weeks/months. ACUPUNCTURE If you are currently seeing me for acupuncture, or would like acupuncture treatment, the Orange and Bathurst clinics remain open. I will update you should this change.... HERBAL MEDICINE For those of you who are currently undergoing herbal medicine treatment with me, you can and should continue with treatment. It is preferable to schedule phone consultations instead of in-clinic visits. Your herbal medicine can either be posted to you or left at either clinic for you to collect (as long as they remain open). WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE FLU LIKE SYMPTOMS If you have any cold/flu symptoms please stay away from the clinics. If you come down with any acute infection whilst on your regular herb treatment please be in touch so we can consider whether your current prescription is still appropriate to take. Do consider herbal medicine treatment for acute infections. We should consult by phone, and send the herbs to you by post, at the first signs of feeling unwell. CANCELLATIONS I ask that if you have an appointment booked and decide not to come, please call ahead to cancel with as much notice as possible. Ideally at least 24hrs.

23.01.2022 So great to be working along side the wonderful Rebecca Cannon at our newly opened East West Clinic. Haven’t been for a visit yet? Book an appointment on 02 6361 9069.

23.01.2022 "The prevention of aging is about longer years of healthy life, free of disease and other drawbacks of old age, vigorous and energetic, with an enthusiasm for life and living. Longevity means extending youth, not extending old age." http://ow.ly/FHJx30nOSBN

23.01.2022 Ok, so this occurs in mice, but there is research that suggests stress effects human genetics too. This speaks to the whole fascinating area of epigenetics whereby environment (which includes our diet and lifestyle choices) acts as information to our genes, turning them on and off . telling our genes whether to express, or not, certain traits. The take away: The stress levels (and health generally) pre, during and post conception, of both the mother and the father, has a ve...ry real effect on future generations. http://ow.ly/DsCX30nEhm2 See more

22.01.2022 Some simple life style tweaks to get that metabolic fire burning hot like a furnace. http://ow.ly/fvoi30mpeO7

21.01.2022 Episode 16 of an interesting series of articles on cancer. This one: a depressing read (sorry) on the commercialisation of cancer, whilst all the while cancer rates soar. http://ow.ly/Vsip30nW4p3

21.01.2022 Acupuncture and Chinese herbs better than drugs for shingles pain. http://ow.ly/ploB30mwvlb

20.01.2022 You can largely blame the food pyramid for this terrible state of affairs. The cost of obesity and diabetes would be roughly comparable here in Australia, adjusted for population size of course. The antidote: a low carb diet . the opposite of the high carb diet, which is what created this mess. http://ow.ly/zPxL30mww1T

20.01.2022 The effect of gut health on mental health is such an exciting area of new research and understanding. The dietary plans I give my patients always have a healthy microbiome as a central focus. http://ow.ly/dq6O30nDtpT

19.01.2022 Mental illness is so complex. An understanding of the biology, via a medical reductionist approach, has thus far proven elusive. Interesting article. http://ow.ly/6bLt50tZwLv

18.01.2022 Headaches and Migraines - Move beyond simply putting out fires.

17.01.2022 Love a wild forage. Perennial veggies and wild grown fruits tend to be more nutrient dense too. http://ow.ly/qOBK30mwv1z

17.01.2022 Visits to truly natural environments have many health benefits. Another, not mentioned in this article, is the effect on your microbiome. Just breathing the air is like a big dose of pro-biotics, only a whole lot more diverse. http://ow.ly/3Yow30nllrW

17.01.2022 Negativity fasting - it's a thing. It's important to be aware of negative thought patterns and make steps to correct them. http://ow.ly/T5oX30nAVkX

17.01.2022 I hope you had a wonderful festive period and summer break. I certainly did. Practice is back in full swing for me now, and I'd love to work along side you with any 2020 health goals you might have. Clinic days have changed slightly to:... Orange - Tuesdays and Fridays - for appointments please call 02 6361 8429 Bathurst - Mondays and Thursdays - for appointments please call 02 6332 1511 See you soon!

16.01.2022 More on the health benefits of "exposure to nature". http://ow.ly/xtnb30nllBk

16.01.2022 Elizabeth Blackburn won a Nobel Prize for her research on telomeres. Telomeres are the end caps on our chromosomes, acting much like the plastic tips on the end of shoe laces - they prevent them from becoming unravelled. The longer your telomeres the lower your biological age, and vice versa. Telomere length is a predictor of longevity and health span. Elizabeth, in her TED talk (linked to here), mentions some important ways to prevent shortening and even regain length:... - Meditation - 12 minutes/day for as little as 2 months. - A generally positive mental state (see also my previous post on Stoicism) http://ow.ly/W1gt30ocPqn

15.01.2022 Nice read on long walks and intentional boredom. Boredom being "the antipode of mindless connectivity, constant stimulation, anger and dissatisfaction". . To be "bored" is to be free of distraction." http://ow.ly/yv9J50w1WxL

14.01.2022 Love it http://ow.ly/Ayqa50uRdU5

14.01.2022 "Approach mindfulness not as a compulsively productive practice of self-improvement there is the self creeping up again but as a state of active presence with everyday life." Maria Popova reviews Sam Harris on the paradox of meditation. http://ow.ly/sKs630nktPf

13.01.2022 Attention is not a resource but a way of being alive to the world http://ow.ly/g0FF30nllff

13.01.2022 Following on from the last post, here's a blog post I wrote a little while ago. http://ow.ly/fXlF50wV2Qh

10.01.2022 I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Yes vegan. Still disgustingly terrible for your health. http://ow.ly/U5SG30o807o

10.01.2022 "I think a regular exercise and healthy diet are just as important as my daily meditation. When our body is not in balance, it is hard to keep your mind free of stressful thoughts and enjoy the present moment." http://ow.ly/tRwA30nAVc7

10.01.2022 First day of practice in Bathurst today! If you're local and in need of some Chinese medicine you can book your appointment by calling 02 6332 1511. http://ow.ly/qhHB30nOSzj

10.01.2022 For a bit of fun, here is your forecast for the year of the Yin Earth Pig. http://ow.ly/SYOK30nAUeE

10.01.2022 It's not new news that exercise greatly supports cognitive function. But it's nice to be reminded. http://ow.ly/30sI50unfHI

09.01.2022 I too am baffled by the "plant-based" diet phenomenon. It's not vegetarian or vegan, because well, you'd just call it vegetarian or vegan. So then is it an omnivorous diet for those who are "just trying to eat a bit less meat"? Still, the term "plant-based" is not all that meaningful. It doesn't automatically imply healthy, and the regular omnivorous diet tends to be largely plant based anyway. Here's a more strongly worded take: http://ow.ly/WoOW50w1Vra

09.01.2022 How to prevent colds and flus this winter. New blog post here. http://ow.ly/VZXv50pPqsZ

08.01.2022 Acupuncture is helpful in treating sciatica not only due to changes at the local area, but also changes in the brain, altering the patient's perception of that pain. I would expect a similar mechanism with most chronic pain. http://ow.ly/vxzT30mpewh

08.01.2022 Exciting news! I'll be starting practice in Bathurst as of 26th February. Tuesdays and Fridays from Macquarie Natural Therapies (117 Lambert St). I can't wait to work with this amazing bunch of practitioners. Practice in Orange will continue as usual but on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

07.01.2022 This is part 1 of an epic 3 part podcast series on sleep (part 2 & 3 can be found via the link below). Heavy on the science at times but still a fascinating listen for all. If you've ever worn lack of sleep as a badge of honour, this is especially for you. http://ow.ly/6Psh50sYteT

07.01.2022 Testing negative for Coeliac Disease doesn't mean you don't have a problem with gluten. http://ow.ly/CeLZ30mKfpD

05.01.2022 A nice commentary on the recent The Game Changers doco. http://ow.ly/7ICu50wV2up

05.01.2022 Making technology work for you . this is an extremely useful article. And yes it is very very complete.

05.01.2022 A slightly entertaining rant from Peter Attia. I share this partly as a proponent of intermittent fasting, but also as a reminder of how misleading (and potentially outright dangerous) misreporting in the health space can be. http://ow.ly/fy4T50u8W5f

04.01.2022 Long-term use of over-the-counter drugs for pain relief is not OK. Non-drug therapies like acupuncture as well as diet and lifestyle interventions, even for short-term pain, should be exhausted first. http://ow.ly/zKqR30nllG5

04.01.2022 East West Clinic Grand Opening!! I’m excited to announce the opening of a new Chinese medicine clinic in Orange. After 2 years of wrestling with real estate agents, council, DAs, amendments, more DAs, builders etc, East West Clinic finally opened its doors last week.... It does feel a little strange opening amidst our current Covid-19 times no party, no cutting of the ribbon, no fireworks, no champagne (well maybe a little) just a quiet, humble, opening of the doors. None-the-less it feels good. I am very pleased with the set up and I’m sure you will be too. Our new clinic has: Plenty of off-street parking Disability access In-house dispensary Hicaps A warm friendly atmosphere Parking and entrance at rear. Bookings essential. Please call 6361 9069. I hope to see you soon.

04.01.2022 As I'm about to break a 4 day fast, this article passes my desk. Basically it's ideal to ease in slowly on the carbs, keep portion size light initially, and use exercise to burn off those potential glucose spikes. http://ow.ly/jVJO50v2HTU

04.01.2022 A lovely article regarding the classical style of Chinese medicine. http://ow.ly/BJgW50wV2HK

03.01.2022 Here's a great case as to why everyone should lift weights. With so much over-promotion and self-inflation in this world of ours, I particularly like this one: "With weightlifting, there's no lying to yourself about what you can and can't do. The weight forces you to be honest and selfaware."... http://ow.ly/mw7050x8dxX

02.01.2022 Orange and Bathurst clinics reopened. I hope you’ve been keeping well over the last few weeks and are getting by in these unusual times. I’m writing to let you know I’ve reopened both of my clinics.... Chinese medicine, as an AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency) health profession, has been considered an essential service throughout this crisis, however I made the personal decision to close by way of doing my bit. Now after 5 weeks of practising via phone consultation only, I feel it is safe to reopen, though with limited hours and some extra precautions in place. I will return to my regular days in each practice, which are: Mondays and Thursdays in Bathurst Tuesdays and Fridays in Orange For the first few weeks it will be a 1pm start on each day, building up to full time over the coming weeks. If you’d like to resume your treatment or start anew, you can book via the below numbers. Orange 02 6361 9069 (note this is a new number) Bathurst 02 6332 1511 I look forward to seeing you soon.

02.01.2022 I'm enjoying these daily emails on Stoicism. Its a great life philosophy, but not a particularly easy one to get into. Ryan Holiday distills the central tenets into daily bite sized chunks (or "meditations"). I recommend signing up (no affiliation here). What does this have to do with health? Basically, Stoic philosophy is about not wasting energy on things over which you have no control, and dealing appropriately with those over which you do.... Mental outlook, whether you view a problem as a challenge or as a crushing disaster for example, has a huge impact on health. Stoicism helps to teach this skill. http://ow.ly/DE4V30ocKbN

02.01.2022 This applies well to health (and nicely also to Yin Yang theory). Optimal health happens by active design and effort. If you wait passively for it to occur, chances are you'll descend into chaos. http://ow.ly/bfAJ50vp2aL

02.01.2022 In my clinic I combine a low carb approach with Chinese herbal medicine for the treatment of PCOS. More on the diet aspect here ... http://ow.ly/WXAt30mfgso

01.01.2022 Spring is here! Now's the time to be getting one step ahead of those hay fever symptoms. Book your appointment today. Orange 02 6361 8429 Bathurst 02 6332 1511... http://ow.ly/oX0O50vX9Zk

01.01.2022 Intermittent fasting seems like such a no-brainer for those with obesity or diabetes. It baffles me that it's not more commonly recommended. But anyway, good to see IF gaining some traction with these guidelines. http://ow.ly/IAYE50sWsIw

01.01.2022 The medical profession, he writes, has become the front-of-house sales team for the [drug] industry. http://ow.ly/Gncp30nOQhP

01.01.2022 Happy New Year! I appreciate all your support through the last year. 2020 also saw the opening of East West Clinic in Peisley St, Orange. I'm absolutely loving the new clinic, and it's great to be working along side the amazing Rebecca Cannon. Both clinics, Orange and Bathurst, are back in full swing now. I hope to see you at one of them soon. Here's to health in 2021!
