21.01.2022 For most of you that follow Chroma Dermatology, or Dr. Michelle Rodrigues’ work, you would see us talk a lot about Vitiligo. Vitiligo is a human skin condition that turns patches of skin and hair white, it is not a disease we hear much about, although it affects approximately 1% of the population. Most famously, Michael Jackson was diagnosed with the condition, but more recently Jon Hamm from TV’s Mad Men has it, as does model Chantelle Brown-Young on America’s Next Top M...odel. So what is Vitiligo? What causes these white spots, and how are they treated? What are the treatments in the spotlight? Visit this link (https://www.google.com.au//explainer-what-is-vitiligo-26647) to learn more about Vitiligo

18.01.2022 #Comedones are dermatologist speak for ‘blackheads’ and ‘whiteheads’. Open comedones = #whiteheads Closed comedones = #blackheads... They are seen in those with #acne and can eventually cause red acne lesions as well as #postinflammatoryhyperpigmentation. They are caused by a build-up of dead skin cells. Oxidation of the #melanin given the black colour, not oil! While they can be improved with skin care ingredients like #salicylicacid, #glycolicacid, #lacticacid and #retinol, sometimes you just need to physically extract them (called comedone extraction). Sterilised extractors that physically pushes out blackheads are often effective, especially after subtle heat is applied to the area before treatment. For whiteheads, the best and least destructive therapy is with radiofrequency treatment. These treatments are safe in all skin types. Benefits Clearer, smoother, more even skin. Can assist when on other #acnetreatments including #isotretinoin (#acutane) to clear skin more quickly. Alert This procedure can be a little uncomfortable for some people (but no numbing creams are required). It is important your therapist is sure exactly which comedones are ‘ready’ for extraction so the pus is not pushed into the surrounding skin. Usually a series of treatment sessions will be required a few weeks apart to get the best results. To learn more about how your comedones can be treated, reach out to us at Chroma Dermatology. 17.01.2022 During summer we get asked a lot about #skincancer risk in patients with #vitiligo Our founder, Dr. Michelle Rodrigues, has published on this very topic in textbooks and medical journals and states that people with vitiligo don’t have a higher risk of skin cancer compared with the general population. She states There are some genetic traits that actually decrease skin cancer risk in #vitiligopatients. It’s complex and intriguing. It may even provide insights into fut...ure #melanoma treatments. However, those with vitiligo are at higher risk of burning from ultraviolet light exposure in affected areas (in white spots)...so don’t forget to be #sunsmart For people getting regular #narrowbandUVB (#lighttherapy) as part of their #vitiligotreatment plan, Dr. Rodrigues recommends wearing a hat, sunscreen, and seeking shade when out and about to avoid burning. Visit My Vitiligo Team for the full run down in the article!

10.01.2022 Iron deficiency is common among women. When levels are very low, iron may be needed to given through a drip. Rarely, during the iron infusion, the iron can leak out into the skin causing #hyperpigmentation. Left untreated, this #pigment would take years to completely resolve. With #PicoSure #laser, we were able to remove the staining on the skin. Usually about 6 treatments are required but this patient had a great result after just 3 treatments! #irondeficiencyanaemia #irondeficiency #ironstaining #hyperpigmentation #skinligthening #chromadermau #dermatology #dermatologist #australia #melbourne #pigmentation #skinofcolour #skin #skindoctor #beforeandafter

05.01.2022 #AlopeciaAreata is the most common autoimmune skin disease in humans. It is caused by a part of the immune system attacking the hair follicles. This causes patches of hair loss (known as #alopecia) to develop. It most commonly affects the scalp but can also affect the beard, eyebrows and other hairy areas. This patient had patches of alopecia areata on the back of his head near his neck. He was treated with a combination of corticosteroid lotion and injections. #alopeciaawareness #hairloss #nohairdontcare #chromadermau #dermatology #dermatologist #australia #melbourne #pigment #pigmentation #skinofcolour
