23.01.2022 Some great news here. The former Fitzroy Church of Christ is of historical, social and cultural significance to the State of Victoria. The church is historically significant as the Aboriginal Church established by Pastor (later Sir) Douglas Nicholls, footballer, activist, pastor, and governor of South Australia. It played an important role in the emergence of social service organisations and the development of the twentieth-century Aboriginal rights movement in Victoria and w...as a place of worship, community assistance, support and activism. Leaders of the twentieth century Aboriginal rights movement, and many Aboriginal organisations emerged from this place. Pastor Doug attracted a large congregation and galvanized the Aboriginal community in the fight for human rights. Together with his wife Gladys, he created a place of community and strength from which contemporary Aboriginal services and organisations evolved. (Written by Stephen J Barrington)

10.01.2022 Melbourne Aboriginal church gets heritage protection A Melbourne church where social justice pioneer, Christian pastor and Fitzroy Football Club legend Sir Doug...las Nicholls preached is now heritage protected. Sir Douglas, a Yorta Yorta man, established the Aboriginal Church of Christ at Gore Street, Fitzroy in the 1940s. The hall was built in the 1860s for a different church, but later became a meeting point for the growing indigenous community in Melbourne as Sir Douglas and his wife Gladys ran church services, bible schools, youth club and social services. The church has been included on the Victorian Heritage Register in recognition of its significance to the Aboriginal community and a hub from which the Aboriginal rights movement grew. At a time when Aboriginal people did not have the right to vote, many Aboriginal political and social justice groups emerged from the church. The heritage listing of the Gore Street church ensures legal protection of the site and means it cannot be altered without a permit or permit exemption from Heritage Victoria. Sir Douglas was a Victorian Football League star who played for Carlton, Northcote then Fitzroy Football Clubs. He helped found the Aboriginal Advancement League which lobbied the federal government on indigenous issues, including during the 1967 referendum He went on to become the first indigenous Australian to receive a knighthood in 1972. And was later the first indigenous Australian to appointed to vice-regal office when he became Governor of South Australia in 1976 Source AAP-NT
10.01.2022 The Risdon Vale Bike Collective is an initiative of Together Church in Hobart and exists to create a place for young people to grow in character and skills for life. This has been achieved through the context of restoring, selling and riding bikes, along with developing local riding infrastructure to mentor and develop skills amongst at risk young people. Since 2005 over 400 young people have been involved in the program, resulting in many positive outcomes for those involved.... Significantly, many of these participants engaged in the Collective over a sustained period of time (some as many as 6 years), receiving long-term encouragement and positive input as they journeyed through their adolescent years. The video below is a snapshot of the past 15 years. and for more info: https://www.facebook.com/rvbikecollective/

07.01.2022 This has been a year like no other where Australians, particularly Melburnians, have experienced lockdown and many have been affected by isolation, loneliness and often despair. In response, Doncaster Church of Christ and Opera Scholars Australia have joined forces to provide an event on Friday the 4th of December at 7-9pm that would see people’s spirits raised in anticipation of better days to come by experiencing the "joy" of Christmas and the "hope" that is found in Christ.... This is a free virtual event where everyone is welcome. The hope is to be able to give back to the artists and production team who have had no paid work during this tumultuous year as well as bring Christmas into homes near and far. It would be much appreciated if you could contribute to the Go Fund Me page: www.gofundme.com/f/virtual-twilight-carols. The line up of artists is incredible: Guy Noble as compere, Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Silvie Paladino, the Melbourne Welsh Male Choir, Richard Thomas and an amazing band with top Melburnian artists to lead the community carol singing. Go to the website www.twilightcarols.com.au to register for the event.
