25.01.2022 Washing your hands, properly and regularly during this health crisis is incredibly important. Along with social distancing - staying 1.5m away from other peopl...e - washing your hands properly is one of the best ways you can help keep your family healthy. #Watch this video from Dr Katie Allen to find out how to do it properly so you get soap on every part of your hands. Katie is the Federal Member of Parliament for Higgins but also a paediatrician and mum to four children.

23.01.2022 EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY all people entering South Australia must isolate for 14-days from their arrival. This applies to South Australians, other Australians and ...other travellers, and will be supported by border control from Tuesday 24 March at 4pm. Exemptions will apply for essential transport including health and medical supplies, health personnel and patients, food and commercial supply chains (i.e. the carrying of goods), healthcare workers, near border interactions, travel of a relative/carer of a dependant individual, and for emergency services. Other travellers (for example fly-in-fly-out workers in the mining industry or national level sporting teams) could be exempt from this provision provided they had approved disease control mechanisms in place. The criteria for testing for COVID-19 has been expanded in South Australia from today to include anyone who has travelled from interstate in the last seven days and have new respiratory symptoms. Please only present for testing if you fulfill the criteria: You have travelled overseas in the past 14 days AND have symptoms. You have travelled interstate in the past 7 days AND have new respiratory symptoms. You have been in contact with a confirmed case AND have symptoms. You are a healthcare worker with direct patient contact AND have a fever (37.5) AND an acute respiratory infection (e.g. shortness of breath, cough, sore throat). South Australia Police will continue to conduct random checks to ensure those required to self-isolate are doing so. 22.01.2022 As there is currently no vaccine or specific drug for COVID-19, the only known way to reduce the spread is through protective measures, such as practicing good ...hygiene, isolating suspected and confirmed cases, and by social distancing. Slowing the spread of COVID-19 has been termed flattening the curve. So how do protective measures help to flatten the curve and what does this mean? The health advice and protective measures in place for COVID-19 will help our community slow the spread and the demand on hospitals, giving the health system more time to prepare and manage the outbreak. Heres just a few of the things SA Health is doing: Weve introduced new legislation so we can provide a more rapid and timely response to public health risks Weve opened dedicated clinics and drive-through collection centres to ease pressure on EDs and GPs, and more are planned to open. Were launching a broad public awareness campaign about good hygiene practices and social distancing. Were also investigating ways we can increase capacity through private sector partnerships. 17.01.2022 We are prepared for a potential coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic spreading to South Australia. People should be alert, but not alarmed. Ongoing research ...and evidence suggests that COVID-19 presents as a mild illness in the majority of cases, with fever and cough being the most commonly reported symptoms. Severe illness and fatalities occur more often in people who are older, have chronic conditions (e.g. cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension) or are immunocompromised (e.g. cancer, renal disease). Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people may also be at increased risk. Our hospitals are ready and prepared to respond. We have opened a COVID-19 clinic at the RAH and are planning more across metro SA. These clinics will test and treat patients outside of Emergency Departments. There is no need to stockpile food or toilet paper. However, you may want to have a few weeks of essential items such as regular medications in case you become unwell and cannot leave your home except to seek medical treatment. If you are well, you do not need to wear a mask unless you have been advised to do so by a medical provider. Surgical masks in the community are only helpful in preventing people who are suspected or have COVID-19 from spreading it to others. We all have a part to play in reducing the risk of getting sick and stopping the spread of infections: Stay home from work and school if you are unwell (e.g. dont go shopping or use public transport until you are well). Avoid contact with others if you are sick (particularly vulnerable people such as older persons and people with chronic medical conditions). If others are sick, keep your distance from them as much as possible (at least 1.5 metres), avoid close contact such as shaking hands, hugging, kissing. Wash hands regularly, particularly after going to the toilet, blowing your nose or handling used tissues. Cover coughs and sneezes with a clean tissue or your elbow. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, or handling food, until you have washed your hands. Wipe down frequently touched surfaces.

13.01.2022 Flare-ups do happen, and in children they are most often caused by colds and flu. These are almost impossible to avoid. A flare-up is different to having #asthm...a symptoms. They are generally more severe and require urgent medical attention. A sign that a flare-up is looming is where your childs symptoms dont respond to reliever medications, or return quickly after a dose. Learn more about flare ups here: http://ow.ly/6pkM50ycFY5

12.01.2022 You might be living with someone who is in self-isolation/self-quarantine because they have: returned from overseas/interstate travel been in close contact ...with a confirmed case You do not have to self-isolate, but you must carefully follow the instructions for living with someone in self-isolation/self-quarantine. However, if you develop symptoms and are suspected to have COVID-19, you will be classified as close contact and will then need to be isolated. If you live with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, you must self-isolate immediately. Follow the self-isolation/self-quarantine advice on our website: https://bit.ly/3aH7uku

11.01.2022 Who touched it before you? Your hands can have germs on them that cause illnesses such as colds, flu, coronaviruses and gastroenteritis. These germs ...can enter the body when your unwashed hands touch your nose, mouth, eyes and any broken skin. Germs are so small you cant see them so it is important to wash your hands even if they dont look dirty. If hands are washed correctly the chances of germs spreading are greatly reduced. Its important to wash your hands thoroughly - just giving them a quick rinse is not enough. Make sure you wash your hands properly and frequently. Learn more: https://buff.ly/2W8paS6

02.01.2022 Do you know what to do in the event of a snake bite? First, is the individuals breathing impaired or are they in cardiac arrest? If yes, perform CPR before an...y of the other first aid steps. Then call 000 - assume every snake is venomous in South Australia. Snake bite first aid: 1. Keep the person calm and still this helps slow the spread of venom through the lymphatic system. 2. DO NOT WASH OR SUCK THE WOUND. 3. Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage to the bite (any stretchy material will do). 4. DO NOT USE a tourniquet to cut off blood supply. 5. Apply the bandage tightly, as you would to a sprain, but not so tight it acts as a tourniquet. 6. Extend the bandage to cover all of the bitten limb (including fingers and toes). 7. Splint the limb to keep it from moving. 8. Stay calm until help/emergency transport arrives. Note: If faced with a cardiac arrest situation and an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is available, follow the instructions provided by the device.
