25.01.2022 Due to COVID-19 restrictions, engagement with the community (to help plan and prepare) cannot go ahead in the usual format. CFA’s Fire Prevention and Preparedness team have put together a ‘quick poll’ a one-question survey to determine how to best engage with communities ahead of the fire season. 25.01.2022 Firefighters call for action after tragic spate of house fires Victorias fire and rescue services are calling for action after six Victorians lost their lives in house fires in the three months from April through to June this year. CFA Acting Chief Officer Gary Cook said Victorians should never downplay the importance of a working smoke alarm.... In July alone CFA saw residents in Olinda, Neerim East and Gonn Crossing escape from blazes each of these homes had a working smoke alarm that alerted residents and allowed them to get out in time. From April through to June we saw a 15 per cent increase in the number of house fires weve attended in CFA districts. #cfavic #cfagippsland #gippsnews

24.01.2022 An impressive display of using CAFS to provide a roadside fire break. Well done Tasmanian Fire Service. #CAFS #CFAVic

23.01.2022 Tomorrow evening, Wednesday 29th April at 5:40 pm, many CFA brigades across Victoria will sound their sirens four times. Each siren sounding will represent and honour the brave Victoria Police Officers who lost their lives in the line of duty in Kew at 5:40 pm Wednesday 22nd April 2020. If you can hear our sirens at 5:40pm tomorrow, there is no reason to be alarmed. We encourage community members to utilise this time to take a moment to reflect and remember the sacrifice mad...e by Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Senior Constable Kevin King, Constable Josh Prestney and Constable Glen Humphris. 22.01.2022 Change your clocks, check your alarm Firefighters urge Victorians to check their smoke alarms are in working order when daylight savings ends at 2 am this Sunday. Mindful of the current situation with many people being indoors at home as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, its never been as important to ensure you have a working smoke alarm.... If your smoke alarm is more than 10 years old, please make sure you replace it. The technology has advanced since they were first introduced, and we know a working smoke alarm is one of the best ways to save lives. 21.01.2022 Have you thought about emergency vehicle access? Important safety tips; *Ensure your property number is clearly visible from the street... *Gates and driveway entrances must be wide enough to allow emergency services vehicle access * Emergency services vehicles must be able to access your property if you are not home *Electric gates must be able to be opened manually in the event of power loss *Heavy foliage and overhanging branches must not block the driveway *When parking in a narrow street, make sure you allow enough clearance for emergency services vehicles *Drivers must not park within one metre of a fire hydrant. 20.01.2022 Far too often our firefighters are called to house fires caused by laundry appliances, some with devastating consequences, which could have been prevented by some simple maintenance. Good housekeeping is essential for a safe laundry especially as the laundry contains electrical items and is used to store cleaning products and chemicals. Laundry fire safety tips:... Clean lint filter after each use. Always let clothes dryers complete its cool-down cycle before stopping. Keep electrical appliances away from water. 19.01.2022 Equipment boost for volunteers thanks to generous community donations Defibrillators, thermal imaging cameras, special truck licences and apparel will keep CFA volunteer firefighters safer, better equipped and more comfortable as $4.8m from the generous donations during the most recent bushfire season has been allocated through a tools and equipment program. Acting CFA Chief Officer Garry Cook said CFA had been incredibly humbled by the influx of donations from all over Austr...alia and the world during the extreme 2019/20 season, and members were very grateful. Its great to see these tools, additional skills and equipment filtering through to our brigades and members before the next bushfire season. Thats where they will make a real difference to the vital work they do in keeping our communities safe, #cfavic #cfagippsland #gippsnews

18.01.2022 Bit smokey in the Latrobe Valley today. Please take care, minimize your exposure as much as possible, and seek assistance if you have any respiratory issues.

17.01.2022 A Churchill home has been gutted by fire this afternoon. CFA crews from Morwell, Traralgon, Yinnar, and Churchill were on the scene of the Fraser Court, which started at about 2.30pm. The heat presented a big issue for firefighters in their recovery so we brought in specialist rehab units. #cfavic #churchill

17.01.2022 Anyone can make a contribution to the recovery effort if you have some time and energy to offer - no experience necessary. Making a contribution to those who have lost so much is very fulfilling, and a lot of fun.

17.01.2022 The fire danger period (FDP) finishes at 1am on Monday, March 16 in the following municipalities in Gippsland: East Gippsland Shire Wellington Shire Council Latrobe City Council... Baw Baw Shire Council South Gippsland Shire Council Residents that wish to conduct burn-offs on their private properties still need to follow some basic rules: - register your burn-off; - check weather conditions; - notify your neighbours; - make sure you have sufficient resources on site to deal with any fire escapes; - follow local council laws and regulations. Registering your burn-off ensures that if somebody reports smoke, the incident will be cross-checked with the burn-off register which will prevent CFA crews wasting resources and showing up unnecessarily on your door. Landowners can register their burn-off with the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) by calling 1800 668 511 or by emailing [email protected]. Landowners will be required to provide some basic information including location, date, expected start and finish times, estimated size, and what they intend to burn. Please be safe, and take extra care, as there is still potential for fires in our bush landscapes.

17.01.2022 Before burning off * Check and follow council regulations * Check the weather forecast for the day of the burn and a few days afterwards. It is the wind that causes most fires to escape. ... * Register the burn on 1800 668 511. This Is important because people passing by report fires, sometimes from kilometres away, way more often than in the past. Registering the burn avoids embarrassment and avoids disrupting volunteers. * Establish a 3 meter fire break. Dry grass around a pile leads to fire escape. * Make sure there are enough people, water and equipment to monitor, contain and extinguish the burn safely. * Notify the neighbours http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/burning-off/

01.01.2022 In May this year, Nary and her family were eating breakfast when they heard a faint beeping noise. Within a matter of minutes, the entire top storey of their house was alight, from a fire likely started by a faulty electrical blanket. Narys whole family were able to safely escape with just the clothes on their back, and credit their safe evacuation to having a working smoke alarm. Install interconnected smoke alarms in all bedrooms and living areas, and ensure you test batteries monthly. Only working smoke alarms save lives.
