25.01.2022 This week National Suicide Prevention Day and RUOK Day fell on the same day. Mental health is important every day. Check in with your friends and family, and please ask for help if you need it. Dont let the wave drown you. Here is the very inspiring story of Brendan who developed acute PTSD as a result of his policing career and came very close to ending it all. ... But he didnt. He tamed the black dog, thanks to help and support from others. We hope you enjoy his story. Please share it with anyone else who might need to hear it today. https://www.churchilleducation.edu.au//taming-the-black-do
25.01.2022 [READ & LISTEN] Taming the Black Dog: The Dream Became a Nightmare Police Officer - Brendan Maccione recently achieved five Diplomas and a Certificate III through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). A great result for anyone, but particularly significant for Brendan who had seen one major crash too many, reached a breaking point in a caf with his young children and had to open up about the fact he was suffering the black dog of PTSD.... In this case study, Brendan talks us through the career doglegs that finally led to him realising his boyhood dream of becoming a police officer, reaching mental burnout, the difference recognition of prior learning has made to his self-esteem, and the charity that has become pivotal to his recovery. https://www.churchilleducation.edu.au//taming-the-black-do
24.01.2022 Now here we are in 2020, and Tony has once again been through the recognition of prior learning process and achieved a Graduate Diploma of Strategic Leadership one of our highest qualifications. So why now? Why more qualifications? We don’t know what the future’s going to bring and I’d rather take a proactive approach and put myself in a good position for whatever comes down the path rather than take the reactive approach and then scramble at the last minute, shares Tony.... This is smart. In these uncertain times there can be a tendency to pull in spending. But more and more we are being contacted by people who are saying, you know what, I am going to invest in me as a business and put myself in the best possible position to take advantage of future opportunities. https://www.churchilleducation.edu.au//continual-recognit/

This is the story of Rheanna who joined the military straight out of high school, then after 13 years, with an unexpected health issue, started to think about her future options. I have a lot of skills, I have a lot of experience, I have a lot of knowledge. Ive got a good attitude, a good work ethic I know all these things, but how do I translate that to a potential employer? Regardless of w...hat field I want to be in, because I dont quite know yet. Thats what got me looking into RPL. https://www.churchilleducation.edu.au//the-value-of-defenc

23.01.2022 Life doesn’t come with guarantees. Hope for bright and shiny, but be prepared for hard knocks too, because they are coming, and that’s ok. A few days ago our eldest child Declan finished Year 12. As parents of course we hope there will be lots of bright and shiny in his future, but we know life is going to smack him around along the way too, as it does for all of us. ... We will be there for him to celebrate the good times, but more importantly to lend a hand when life gets tough. I hope you enjoy this story, it's a quick read that includes a fast car, a rite of passage and some sage advice - the silver lining of life's hard knocks. Today, what we most wanted to let you know is that we are right here for you too, to help the best way we can. 1300 793 002 / [email protected] https://www.churchilleducation.edu.au//hope-for-bright-an/
23.01.2022 Years ago, I had a secret goal in my mind a measure of success. I thought that it would be remarkable to be the type of person who was featured on Australian Story. Those people, they are often incredibly everyday in so many ways and then in the depths of their character, they reveal themselves to be extraordinary. Courageous. Clever. Compassionate. Champions.... And I figured if we have one life to lead these are the qualities that would make me feel the greatest sense of achievement at the end of my days. Then I started to see a pattern: these people on Australian Story that I admired so much, they had all experienced real hardships. Life changing accidents, debilitating illnesses, grief beyond my comprehension and hardships that made me weep. I decided I just wanted to live not do hard times, after all. Just live day by day, an easy life. This is a picture of Randall and I at a police ball circa 1999, very early on in our relationship. Since then, hard times have come knocking, persistently... 15.01.2022 As the Chief of the Defence Force received the Afghanistan Inquiry report from the Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force, my mind has turned often to the true value of recognising the many women and men who have served in the ADF. We talk to serving ADF and veterans every week. And consistently, they are women and men of few words when it comes to the significance of their service. I started looking back through the records to determine how many Australians have s...erved at war and was floored by what I discovered. Based on my Dad's little talked about war experience and the staggering numbers I uncovered, I felt compelled this week to put some words together to express our ongoing respect and gratitude during this complex time: The responsibility to continue to recognise the honourable service of our veterans, past and present, and the serving ADF personnel, well, that lays with the rest of the Australian community. We thank you for your service. You may not speak of it, but we will, now and into the future, with respect and gratitude for your courage and commitment. And we will never forget. Tricia, Randall, Nick, John, Amanda, Melody, Carina, Jo, Lovely, Newnie, Sunshine, Sherry, Leonie and Paddy P.S. Should you need support through this time, these services provide a high standard of care and support for ADF personnel and veterans: Mates4Mates Soldier On Australia Beyond Blue https://www.churchilleducation.edu.au//respect-and-gratit/
15.01.2022 Hello there, I hope youre having a great Saturday. A few days ago it was RUOK day, and I shared that actually right now I am not ok. But that is just a part of life. ... None of us will ever make it through life without encountering something that shakes us to our core. There was no promise in life that we would always be happy. There was no commitment that life would always be fair. So if you are not OK today, know that you are not alone. In the post below Ive shared a bit more about where Im at right now, and what Im doing with it. Ive had message back from quite a few people telling me they found it helpful. 12.01.2022 I want to tell you a quick story about what we think about when we hear your name... - Back in Randalls policing days and my prosecuting days, all of the witness statements were marked with peoples full names. And all of those files were linked to a unique story - In fact, before I ever met Randall in person, I knew his full name from his witness statements that would come across my desk. ... - Randall Lee Smith - And when we had agreed to our first date, Randall looked me up on the police system and jotted down my full name - Tricia-Anne Velthuizen - Along with my date of birth and car rego. Typical copper! - He still has that little note tucked away in our memory box. - We both worked in the space of official documents and peoples stories for so long that we developed a really good memory for recalling people by their full name. - Its a habit we have never lost. - Every week, when Churchill Alumni return to talk with the team here about their latest career step, achievement or challenge, and we overhear a conversation about their needs, into our mind leaps their name and their story. - It happened this week, when Randall came home to me and said, - So today, I chatted with a Churchill Alumni client from 9 years ago. You might remember him, Ian , and before Randall could go on, I had answered with Ians surname and his background. - Happens all the time. - It is how we strive to work across the team at Churchill - Seeing every person who comes to us for their own story, needs, and value. - To help give you the recognition you deserve. - Across the country, people are assessing their career options whether by choice or circumstance, responding to opportunity or stepping up to face challenges. - If you want some help as you consider your own situation or you know someone who could benefit from that career advice and support, the Churchill Team is here to help you - Not with generic advice but with the power of listening and sharing the best knowledge and experience we have built up since 2006. - Because we each have our own story to tell and our own life to lead. - If you would like a member of our team to contact you for any reason at all... For a skills assessment, some career advice, some direction, or simply a friendly voice on the other end of the phone, give us a call on 1300 793 002.
